My unfortunate experiences with the high school has been that they are not concerned whether all kids will graduate on time unless they are an athlete then they have many many opportunities the other kids don't. But this has been MY experience with MY kids and this was during the absolutely ridiculous WASL. We used OUR own minds and got our kids out asap. Nothing wrong with a GED if you are in complete disagreement with the stupid graduation requirements. He is now a college grad with a job and did it without any help from the high school in fact in his case they did all they could to make his life miserable and force him to drop out. He didnt drop out but he didnt get a SW diploma (no biggy to him, but some of his friends didn't believe that a GED will get you into a college but they were wrong, many of them did get a diploma and are unemployed still, some went on to college until the money ran out or they got disillusioned or kick out!!) After high school many of the kids were questioning what the purpose of the projects were other than to add another barrier to graduation. Kids think that school is what life is about and have a hard time outside of school when no one is willing to set goals for them and call them in when they don't meet them and coddle them and heap false praises on them. We allow the schools to keep this farce up and a lot of kids have a hard time transitioning to "real life" after graduation. I made sure my kids understood that school is just a small phase in life and not how life will be. I am just glad I don't have to deal with this any more!! Its not like the school loses money if they don't graduate. Do you feel that your kids education has been better than yours?? I don't. I find it lacking in many areas.

Yippeee I will vote against the hospital with glee!!!!!!! So what if other hospitals are "nicer" this one is the worst among all of them. I would like to know why the are not JCAHO accredited?? High standards they just refuse to meet??? bah humbug

"At some point we have to hold the line and hold the kids accountable" Yeah I wish we could hold the school board, the administrators and the teachers accountable too. I fear for public education and see nothing that comes out of these ridiculous projects that helps anyone at all. It gives the kids distorted views of what to expect when they are out of school. Higher education is getting farther away for most so this is just a way of weeding out the kids who have been lost in the system. I wonder how much more this will cost too?? Two ceremonies?? One for the "good" kids and one for well ..........???

Seriously disturbing if you truly believe this misinformation. Do you have a single original thought or do you just swallow everything that Fox tells ya??? Did any of this pass the smell test?? Do you object to the costs of the so called war ????? Can you tell me how much that costs per day and then compare that to what you possibly believe about this trip. Of course you would criticize Obama for anything he may or may not do so whatever..... I am always amazed at how pure and simple common sense goes away when your "guy" isnt in power.

If you look at an article written by a real "newspaper" they talked to people on the boats and the Ferry system and apparently the replacement boats were escorted by armed coast guard. I have ridden the ferries before ususally around memorial day and they pull this armed escort thing too. We are supposed to be impressed with the security of our ferries!!! Oh please we are lucky so far that we havent had a real horrible mishap. These boats need replacing but I bet you see a new bridge for Bellevue before we see a new ferry or make sense out of the routes we do have. Why cant I go to Seattle from Clinton? Why for that matter cant I go to Everett where there are destinations not Mukilteo where you just go through and heck they are sick of the ferry and those of us that ride them. Just doesnt seem sensible but why would I expect that???

So the record gets all its "news" stories from Craigslist huh!!! Not surprised at all, they reacted to a stupid post about a mcdonalds in freeland too. This is just some pervert trying to get young girls to send him pictures. Any business that has visited freeland and done any preliminary investigation would know nothing that may need "young" people to survive and shop at will work in freeland. Its a dead and dying little town and thats the way they like it!!!! Seriously the report should have been on some guy trying to get young girls to contact him, he probably put the mcdonald post in too hoping teens would apply.

Gee thanks for all your wonder advice (didnt even know I was asking!!)
1. my kids are much too old to join 4H and I am even older!!!!! Or can 25 year olds participate?
2. love the idea of donating to something I think is a waste of resources!! ha ha like my voice (or any of the others here feeling the same way) would be heard, I have been on boards before to try and get my point of view heard but one lone voice on a board of people who think everything is fine the way it is and dont appreciate or want differing views is again a waste of time. The old stand by of "we tried that before" always gets in the way.
3.The last time we were at the fair (a few years ago) it was 7:00pm and all the barns were closed and/or nobody was around. Surely they take pride in their projects--good for them!!
4. The Timewasters are boring, if ya heard em once ya heard enough, I dont care if they play the fair but how about something different once in a while????? or did we do that a few years ago and it didnt work????

No I wont quit complaining and no I didnt go. Honestly the price to get in kept me home this year I did want to go eat there but wasnt going to pay all that to get in to get fair food, but seriously who cares if I go or not or if I post stupid stuff on in reaction to the non newsy story??? I know people love to come on here and try and provoke flaming but really why would anyone care how I feel?? I didnt see many positive comments on here and I dont see the fair board asking for comments either.

The fair is so so so boring, the same things in the same places, I moved out of the area for a few years (12) and when I returned I was so excited to bring my family to the fair.......wow how boring!!!!! I realize Whidbey isnt a happen' place and thats apparently the way they like it here but really cant we have what so many others counties have??? Pride in our county fair instead of the private affair they put on each year??? The same music and musicians no big names from the past like so many other county fairs. I assume the fair board is stacked with life time appointments and they are not about to let anyone else have input. I would like to go just for the food but even it is so unremarkable and the cost to get in is so high for what is inside its just not worth it. Such a shame too because we live in a great place and we should have a great fun fair but we have nothing like it. Really the Timebenders...again??

We would have to have the powers that be change the no camping rule to make any sense out of your proposal which is very sensible. Why is there no destination resort here???? That would help with jobs for the summer season at the least we see all the behemoth RV's here but they leave our area to go up island or off island. Our tourist destinations here on the south end are pretty lame.

Thank you for pointing out the obvious lonedissenter, south whidbey offers nothing for teens and young adults for work. They chase them off island as soon as they can after high school such a shame for those of us who enjoy young people.

Oh please like this is supposed to make us taxpayers feel better???? They are way way overpaid as it is and they know it. This is supposed to help us taxpayers want to vote for Prop 1, no freakin way. I will vote no on all money requests as they havent even begun to try to control costs they just want it to stay the same as it is now. "Oh dear we cant pay for all of our little pet projects and look at how the taxpayers are burdened but if we lower their property taxes and then ask for a permanent increase do you suppose they would notice??? along with the school money and everything else. NO DARN WAY
I wouldnt heap any praise on these guys yet lets watch and see what they can come up with on their own as they sure dont listen to the voters. Funny how county jobs change people, Helen Johnson seemed to have ideas before she got there and now................................nothing but disappointment.

Yep lets not have the safety that the unions provide on such a system as the ferries. I am not nor have I ever been a member of a union but with conditions such as they are in our country right now with corporations taking short cuts and overworking employees what is wrong with a union?? Do you think they pay too much is that the problem??? Because living wages are what we Americans should be fighting for not sitting back keeping quiet. I just look at the mess in the gulf and see how oversight and regulations would have made a big difference.

Why would you want to keep those kids in a building that is so old and most likely not adequately reinforced for a big earthquake? Truly programs like home ec should be offered in high school I have complained about that for a long time but really its more of an emotional issue than anything and that is not enough to keep the kids there. Think of it as out with the old in with the new. Then think of the possibilities of a new business (hopefully) that will take over the building and possibly create some jobs so families can stay on the island.

"Strong schools build strong communities" Stronger if the community is richer too. We can't afford this school district on so few citizens. Remember there are a lot of older people here that can't afford every increase you ask (even thou you always get them) This will be a place for millionaires only soon anyway and then wow you will see a good school because they will be able to afford it. I can't. It is my opinion only but I wouldn't call it a great school at all and yes my kids went there. You have to say this Helen because you are on the board.

How very sad, I am so so sorry for all the pain that the family will endure over such a senseless act. What in the world would ever make someone do that? We live in a very sick world right now and the rhetoric and decisiveness needs to stop. We are all citizens of this great country and we need to get together not be pulled apart. Strong communities are safe communities.
