Your brief mention of our obsession with the second amendment hints at this. Our focus on the unborn and our complete lack of interest in the born, throughout their entire childhood puts a spotlight on our hypocrisy. This argument the US is having is not a moral one with regard to the sanctity of life. As of February 2022, the death penalty is legal in 27 of the 50 US states. The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with 629 prisoners per 100,000 residents. This equates to more than 2 million prisoners in the United States. As of January 2022, 2,463 prisoners were currently sitting on Death Row. In 2020 the US ranked #6 in the world for confirmed deaths, behind China, Iran, Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Re: Learn to Velvet Scallops the Chinese Way

Happy New Year!
I have a question concerning the photo a the beginning of this article. I would like to make the scallops as they appear in that photo. They seem to be basically raw in a light soy or dipping liquid with scallions sprinkled on top. I usually eat my diver scallops raw or mi-quit (half cooked). The scallops in the photo look like they might be a bit like that. I assume the technique that was described in the article was used but I am wondering what sauce they are sitting in. Can you please let me know how they were prepared and what the sauce is? Thank you! (Scripting News)

In the U.S. old media was "allowed" to have a limited scope. When you read other news sources like the BBC, or non-english publications you get information that never sees the light of day here. Access to information from vetted sources has expanded exponentially and put the pressure on old media. Historically, media here did the job that was expected by their profession, the government (Viet Nam coverage) and people. Things have changed, obviously.
For many reasons, I think that more and more people want to focus on issues that are important to them. I am an example of someone who prefers to take the time to cruise the news/information sources and focus on issues or information I value. I do not trust mainstream sources here to give me all the information that I need to decide what position I will take or how I feel about what is going on.
I also feel that the average citizen does not have the time or the interest to do this themselves. That is why I think venues like twitter expose them to things, they would not ordinairly notice, by just being there. Even if the involvement is superficial and temporary for some (green photo for Iran) it still brings something to their awareness and potentially stimulates interest and conversation.
The word news comes from the word new. It is technically a piece of information. We/I do not need anyone to explain to me why somthing is important. Information gathering is the source and if others sort for you, you are letting them shape what you think and know. Of course, it is your right to choose this way of getting your "news".

Re: Is it news if it's not reported? (Scripting News)

The whole point of the " " was to address the use of the word law. What is being discovered are pieces of the structure of the universe, that exists independently of the human mind. Example: the organization and function that occures on a cellular level has a pattern. We discover it piece by piece. We don't understand exactly what the pieces mean or how they fit together-the blind men feeling different parts of an elephant.

I regret the use of that word now because the point was to be an example for the idea that news/information contains a potentiaity of its own, independent of the observer. Occurances/events arise spontaneously, like life. The question was, is it news if it is not reported. I was trying to support the idea that it is, potentially, always news for someone. It is the discovery of it, through direct or inderect observation combined with the effect on the observer, that defines it as news, boring, shocking or whatever. It is the observation of a subatomic particle that defines it physically. Otherwise, it is either a wave or a particle (as far as we know for now), always having potential for both.

Re: Why Perez Hilton Should Not Have Deleted His Original Michael Jackson Post

Leave it and explain, otherwise you appear dishonest. It reminds me of the idea about a tree
http://www.spectacle.org/39... . This link is a bit of topic but I found it helps make my point.

When we discover a scientific "law" we are finding something that was there all the time. Human consciousness can reveal it to humans. Information has the potentiality to be news at any given moment for any given person. News for ME is information/content that I was not previously aware of or that I use as a step to something else that I did not know.

Of course we can debate the formal definition of news. Definitions of words are distilled for general use so we have a functional language. Most people don't really care to think about the concepts behind the definition they just want to understand usage (another issue)

FYI, I find travel - getting out of daily habitat/habits does stimulate creativity.

Re: There's a missing product (Scripting News)

I agree with you. It is clumsy and reading your post made me think of the pain (for me) of filing paperwork-bills, records, important docs. Sometimes stuff piles up, sometimes certain things are more important-tax time, and some needs to be discarded. I find that I have to clean up what/who I follow periodically because I change my focus, someone becomes boring or I just have too much and can't find what I really want. It would be great if there was something to make it less time consuming.

Re: New iPhone 3GS macro and autofocus features rock

I just let the people who pride themselves on being snarky work out their stuff. She would give them a terse response and move on quickly. Then one day when she was complaining about it to a friend they told her something she shared with me. They asked her if she had ever considered that she may be the only person that the elderly person spoke to or tried to speak to that day. When she told me that I felt horrible because I was gulty of the same attitude. From that day on I go out of my way to look at them, smile and say hello. Old people become invisible and some have written about it. I think part of the problem is how time flys and how busy we can get with our "important stuff". I have noticed their surprise when I acknowledge them and I think that part if his surprise was hearing a voice directed at him. I am so wacked and enjoy doing so many things I forget that many people, young and old are lonely. I think that is what really makes me sad about the whole thing-the idea that someone is lonely.

Re: Maureen Dowd (Scripting News)

This is classic "circle the wagon" mentality. Medical professionals as well as government professionals exibit the same behavior. I agree that Dowd must give a detailed account of what happened and, issue an apology, at the least. I find Dan Kenney's reference to Amy Alkon, in his post on Media Nation very intriguing. I never would have thought of that. I also agree that writers may not have been as ethical in the past and now they are being held to account.

In response to the comment by L. Orsini, this is not about politics. It is about honesty, truth and professional ethics.

Humble pie does not always go down easy.

Re: A big idea in a little podcast (Scripting News)

Sorry, but I can't resist. JUST a mirror? What type of mirror-one that enlarges(concave), on that reduces(convex), one that is two-way,one that is smokey, cracked or otherwise damaged? Or, maybe just the simple common mirror, that can focus the rays of the sun and ignite what it chooses. Yes, a mirror but the type varies and they all have potential power. Seriously, I agree with the actual point and feel that the capturing the freshness of respected amateurs would invigorate the Times (and any other serial publication).

Re: Taking off the training wheels (Scripting News)

Because of what you do, you are able to be both a participant and an obserrver of emergence.
