But Bell didn't want to have to move to Hawaii or something like that? To be honest, as much as I adore her, I don't think she would have fit the part. She looks too young, despite the fact that her and Rebecca Mader are only a year apart.

Re: Fringe 1×12 “The No-Brainer” review

There has to be someone higher up the food chain than Broyles or else Harris wouldn't be able to call the shots. The reason Charles Widmore has not gone after his daughter could just be because he knows Ben is after her and, presumably, watching his every move. Since Desmond probably doesn't know of Ben's threat I hope he tried really hard not to be noticed when he waltzed into Charles Widmore's office. Ben's goons could be watching!

I have to admit to being a bit of a fan of Charlotte (partially because I enjoyed Rebecca Mader's work on FOX's short-lived "Justice") so I hope whatever is happening to her doesn't lead to her death. At first, my theory was that everyone was going to start getting headaches and having nosebleeds due to shifting through time. Charlotte was just the first to show symptoms. Now I'm not so sure. Given what Miles said last season about Charlotte having been on the island before, perhaps that has something to do with it.

Also, I tried to figure out how many of the original survivors were left a few days ago using Lostpedia and the number I came up with was a confusing one. Thirteen are known to still be alive both on and off the island and the whereabouts of 21 others is unknown (including a number who were taken by The Others during the first two or three seasons). Should they also be traveling through time because they were presumably on the Island when it started moving?

For that matter, why did The Others disappear when Ben moved the Island? The ones with Locke, for example, were gone when he started looking for them. But Juliet is still around. Confusing.

Re: Fringe 1×12 “The No-Brainer” review

Do we know who Broyles reports to? I've always been confused about who is Olivia's immediate supervisor: Agent Broyles or Agent Francis. I'm sure it was covered in the pilot but I've obviously forgotten. Broyles is head of the Fringe unit but Francis seems to be the one calling the shots with other FBI agents. We often see a large group of people working together -- like Loeb -- and Francis appears to be more than just another agent.

Anyway, while I still think Harris is one-dimensional, I do agree that it could be interesting to see what happens when people unaware of what the Fringe unit does and sees begins to ask questions. What if they get shut down and have to work outside the chain of command ... on the fringes? Har har.

Re: LOST - 5×01-5×02 - “Because You Left”-”The Lie”

I guess I don't just barely remember seeing Frogurt before. I just barely remembered seeing him before. How can such an annoying character be a fan favorite? Anyway, I really enjoyed these two episodes and all the questions they raise. But I am not sure I like the direction the overall mythology of the series is taking. It is just a gut feeling right now but I worry that it is getting a bit too ... big.

Re: How I Got These Scars No. 15

I've had the trade paperback edition of Watchmen on my shelf for over a year and haven't read it. Part of the problem is that I have too many things to read and too little time to spend reading them. But I've also been thinking that I should see the movie first and then read the comic. That way, if the movie is a) bad or b) alters things drastically, my experience with the true Watchmen can still be somewhat untainted.

Re: Fringe 1×11 “Bound” review

Of all the confusing, super serialized dramas currently on the air, I feel Fringe is the one that most needs a recap special before new episodes begin. But Lost and Battlestar Galactica are the shows that get recap specials. Fringe has to settle for a short recap within the episode (that you mentioned).

I find myself more confused at the end of each new episode, partially because the mysteries are so forgettable each week and partially because I have a difficult time keeping track of the running plots. I have never had this much trouble following Lost. And I agree that Walter and Peter were underutilized in this episode. I also hope that Olivia's sister and whatever trouble she's in gets wrapped up quickly.

Still, if a few million American Idol viewers kept the television on for "Bound" and a few hundred thousand of them decide to stick around, that's only good news for the future of the series.

Re: Vote for the Ultimate Lost Moment in Lost: Showdown

I vote for any time Nikki (or Corvette) yelled "razzle dazzle."

Re: Sound Off to Lost - January 21st, 2009

I looked her up on Lostpedia and now I recognize her.

Re: Sound Off to Lost - January 21st, 2009

Is it just me or have we never seen that white-haired woman who was chatting with Ben in the church before?

Re: Fringe 1×10 “Safe” review

From what I remember, I really enjoyed this episode. The rest of the episode not so much. I agree that it seemed a little repetitive -- and, obviously, was in some ways -- and right now I am quite confused about Olivia and how John's memories are stuck in her.

Re: Fringe 1×8 “The Equation” review

I had to look up this episode to refresh my memory and even that did not help all that much. I am having a hard time remembering exactly how Joanne was involved with the plot to gain the equation. And I do wish we learned more about Walter's visions of himself (or did we and I have just forgotten).

Re: How I Got These Scars No. 14

You raise a lot of good points but I think you've glossed over the single biggest problem facing comic books today: a dwindling reader base. New readers can't find quality if they can't find the comic books themselves. I was actually surprised to find a spinner rack of new comics at a Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago. How are publishers -- large or small -- expected to draw in new readers if the only place to find comic books are are speciality shops?

There are quality books out there, as I am increasingly aware these days. Up until the last two years I was only reading two books a month, Captain American and Fantastic Four. I've branched out now and I'm reading eight or nine books a month, many of them miniseries and a few that aren't from DC or Marvel.

But I learned about them from my local comic shop. I doubt I would have found any of them at a book store or a newsstand or a drug store. Even when word of a quality book spreads, it only spreads within the relative confines of comic book fandom. It rarely engages the general public. And when it does (Captain America 25, the recent Obama appearance in Amazing Spider-Man), it doesn't seem to do anything to bring in new readers month after month.

All the complaining about crossovers or variant covers happens at websites or forums where comic book fans are already present. Something needs to be done to make comic books relevant to the general public and while a quality product is a great start (I would also suggest dropping the cover price and getting rid of hard stock covers and shiny pages) even the highest quality comic book won't make waves if nobody can read it.

Re: The Spirit

I forgot about that. The last half of the last season of any show would be a tough sell, let alone a show like Battlestar Galactica!

Re: Heroes - 3×10 - “The Eclipse (1)”

Those are all valid points you've raised. And I doubt very much we'll ever get any sort of answer. Of the fan productions I've seen, none have been impressive. Of course, "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" appears much more impressive but everything I have seen -- production stills, a trailer -- did nothing to interest me in watching it. I guess I'm just too picky.

Re: How I Got These Scars No. 9

There hasn't been a second issue of Fringe yet. No Sarah Connor, no John Connor. As for "Self Made Man," I really enjoyed the episode. Cameron is a great character and this was a tour de force for her. I somehow missed that the Terminator's original mission was. I wonder if we will learn more about the governor in future episodes.

Re: Review - Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - “Complications”

I also can't understand Ellison's motivation for taking Cromartie's body.
