I was finally successful with grub4dos + kon-boot (with my external USB hdd = seagate freeagent go) using the config from post #4 @ this boot-land.net forum post :: http://www.boot-land.net/fo...

;;; grub4dos config follows ;;;

title KONBOOT Local Hard Drive
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
map --mem /images/konboot.img (fd0)
map --hook
chainloader (fd0)+1
rootnoverify (fd0)

title KONBOOT USB Drive Menu
map --mem /images/konboot.img (fd0)
map --hook
chainloader (fd0)+1
rootnoverify (fd0)

very big thanks to irongeek (AND boot-land.net) for pointing out that USB kon-boot was even possible! everyones hardware is different, figured others may find this information of use

Re: Using Kon-Boot from a USB Flash Drive: By pass those pesky Windows and

Replace x with the number you got from disk management."
? so if I am correct in my assumption, it should all look like = "grubinst (hd0)" ? by this, you mean install grub4dos to the MBR instead of the partitions boot sector? is there a specific reason for this? honestly I'd perfect only to write it to the partition, instead of the MBR - but I will try both ways to be certain! thanks for the help + howto!
--------------------------------
update here: using grubinst compiled for linux (( obtained this file = http://download.gna.org/gru... )) I had to run the following ::

# ./grubinst /dev/sda       <<<<===== it WOULD NOT take (hd0) or hd0 in linux

# ./grubinst -l /dev/sda <<<<==== that to list the device just to see whats on it (similar to fdisk -l)
Partition list
#  id      base      leng
0  07        3F  115E8C1B (142290M)
1  0C  115E8C5A   138B2BD (10006M)
2  0B  12973F17    3EC100 (2008M)
3  05  12D60017  126CD6AA (150939M)
4  83  12D60056   138C9BD (10009M)
5  83  140ECA52   1388AFC (10001M)
6  83  1547558D   2E8F4E0 (23839M)
7  82  18304AAC    1DE7BB (957M)
8  83  184E32A6   CF4A41B (106133M)

Re: Using Kon-Boot from a USB Flash Drive: By pass those pesky Windows and

I am definately a big fan!
