Many thanks for this. I'm going to be in NYC 5/25-5/30 with my wife and daughter. We will be returning from Orlando and thought we'd take a bite out of the big apple as we are routing through JFK. We are going to be staying at the Helmsley on E 42nd st.

I'm really looking forward to trying some of these restaurants and others you have mentioned in your favorites post.

I am more excited about the idea of 5 days in NYC than I am about 10 days in Orlando.

Could you tell me, which, if any, of these restaurants it would be advisable to make a reservation for or can arrive on spec for most of them and would any of them be unwelcoming to a 12 year old ?

I also think about authority and authenticity. When that girl searches for Argentina’s GNP she will most likely a) google it and b) take one of the top three links to get her answer. And it would most likely be a Wikipedia entry. How can she trust that source? How can that girl in Pittsburgh be assured when she hangs out in that They Might Be Giants chartroom that she is indeed interacting with likeminded people and is not interacting with someone with disingenuous intent. ?

One thing that the hypothetical Liberian has to their advantage is that when they do discover the answer they are very confident to the authority and the accuracy of their answer.

When these challenges are resolved, and I am confident they will, then the guarded love I also have for the Internet will fall and the world will have truly completely changed.

I think it was in Dan Pink’s book A Whole New Mind (Why Right-Brainers Will Rule The World) where he describes a hypothetical scenario 10 years ago of the chief librarian of the world’s greatest library and young girl in a remote village in Africa both being asked last year’s GNP for Argentina. The probability is that the librarian would discover the correct answer quickest.

Now fast forward that same scenario 10 years but this time the girl has a high speed internet connection and we have a much leveller playing field.

The internet is amazing for the connections and communities it creates, as you say. It is also amazing for the way it has commoditized information and made it freely accessible to everyone.

Basicaly my default advanct tempate do not contain the same strings as you post in your online tutorial of how to intergrate DISQUS with TypePad (Yes I have a Pro acc). Thanks in advance.

I don’t know. The specific targeting of westerners is more than a random bombing of which there have been a few over the years. If I had a trip coming up soon (which I don’t) I would defer. The chances of you being caught up in anything are very slim but if I were there now I would find it a very nerve wrecking experience to be always looking over my shoulder, hitting the deck whenever a car backfires or wary of every strangers approach. You won’t find me in India this side of 3/09 if I have any say in the matter.

I agree gregorylent India is a gift to the world and a place I would encourage anyone to experience but I don’t think it’s the act of a mediated mind to defer a trip for a couple of months while the geopolitics plays out.

If it’s your first time to India I’d recommend a visit to a tropical medical bureau to get some booster shots.

I usual load up on Malarone and start taking 24\48 hours prior to arrival.

I also pack a first aid kit with antiseptic hand wipes, mosquito replant, insect bite ointment, Immodium and Dioralyte.

Take particular care where and what you eat. Avoid street vendors.

Maybe I’m a bit of a Charlotte York but colleagues of mine have had horrifying gastrointestinal experiences.

I’ve been seven or eight times to India now, enjoyed every visit and never fell ill. It was always reassuring to know though that I was prepared for the worst.

Though nothing prepares you for the culture shock on your first visit.

I thinking discussing net neutrality (in this context) is a red hearing. I can choose to smoke in my own personal space and am free to do so, but I daren’t in a public place like an aeroplane or on public transport because a) technology (smoke detectors) and b) policy (it’s a criminal offence to do so).

How do feel about filtered content. Personally, I wouldn't want be sitting beside someone who was viewing NSFW material nor that my children could come into contact with such material on flights and\or any form of public transport.
