Exactly, this would be a horrible tattoo. Most tattoos are horrible exactly because of the fact that they are permanent. But putting some writing or drawing on your arm that will soon go away, and maybe get replaced by another idea? That's awesome. The constant push towards expressing a new idea/feeling/image is infinitely superior to something that never goes away.

I mean, this is coming out of a very specific conversation about My Bloody Valentine and shoegazer, don't forget that. We're talking about music that buries the voice, and jumps into a musical dreamland. We're not talking about indie rock in general, we're talking about music that evokes that kind of detached dream world in the face of hopelessness.

You have a good point, but I think your No Ages and Animal Collectives and really quite a lot of the rather middling indie right now is coming from this place. There's always the exceptions, you know? That's why they are exceptional.

I don't just say this because I write for them, but Spin is a really good magazine these days. It always has a lot of high quality feature articles, and its writers and contributors are of a very high standard. It's reputation will probably always be fucked by that horrible spell when that Maxim asshole took over, but as it is right now, it's reverted to being a solid music publication with a focus on the sort of longform stories and investigative articles that blogs and online magazines can't do as well as print magazines.
