That's the main upgrade I'm waiting for. I have the firmware upgrade, but it still requires TC input to not drift. I would also use the 4 channels of audio if the monitoring and recording had some more flexibility.

Re: Sony A7sIII will be the first mirrorless system camera to support CFexpress Type A cards!

Type A, B, and C have been in development for years. Sometimes it takes a long time to bring them to market. Nobody is using Type A cards yet because they don't exist yet. They're competitive with SD Express. They could become a parallel standard. Sony has an investment in the standard and may hope everything moves to CF Express A, B, and C in the future for various applications. And who's to say they won't get faster over time, just as SD cards did.

Re: Sony A7sIII will be the first mirrorless system camera to support CFexpress Type A cards!

I doubt Sony was responding to Canon rumors. Sensor development takes more than a year. More likely they were waiting for the CF-Express Type A cards to be ready to go to market and the new Sony XEVC h.265 codec to be worked out, so they can support specs like 4K 60p 4:2:2 10 bit at reasonable data rates.

Re: Sony Confirms a7S III Launch on July 28th, Here’s What We Know So Far

Might use their new h.265 codec, which could make those high end video specs possible to UHS-II SD cards.

Re: RED Komodo 6K for 6K

There's definitely a market for cinema cameras under $10K that use stills lenses. A lot of up and coming filmmakers would love to have this camera. It's got a lot more features in terms of cinema shooting than a mirrorless, though in my opinion, I like the Canon Cinema EOS line (or cameras like the Sony FS5/7) for ergonomics and features. I agree it has a lot of competition, but maybe someone ACs on REDs or had them in film school and wants an affordable camera in the same ecosystem. I think REDs are overpriced, but they do make a nice image.

Re: Embedding Instagram Photos Without Permission Isn’t Copyright Infringement: Court

Can it only be used with the embed code? Because in that way, at least, it's shown that the context is the photo was posted to Instagram, on that user's account, with the IG frame and info. It sucks to not get paid, but that's like journalistic coverage of her photography, which could be considered fair use anyway. If the photo is taken out and used purely as editorial, then it should definitely have to be licensed by the photographer. Does anyone know if that's the case? Otherwise you could steal any photo on Instagram for any purpose. That would be kinda crazy.

Re: This is what Sony said about the future A7sIII: It will have 4k60p and 10bit 4:2:2 and exceed expectations!

If you want to shoot with an external recorder. Not everyone does. A highly efficient internal H.265 4K60p might be more economical for hard drive space, post production requirements, and form factor. When I shoot projects that require RAW, personally I'd rather step up to a cinema camera for the other features like built-in ND, XLR, real timecode, etc.

Re: Fujifilm Revealed How Their Ambassador Takes Photos. If a creator has millions of followers and isn't making money from the platform, they'll find another platform where they can monetize. On Instagram, creators make money by being sponsored by brands, and with stricter rules about disclosure, it's harder to sneak in that "influencer" post. It's going to look more like an ad. YouTube definitely has a more robust ad and revenue share system, more like traditional TV/cable networks.

Re: Instagram Made $20 Billion in Ad Revenue in 2019, Out-Earning YouTube by a Lot

Except that TikTok is about to eat Instagram's lunch.

Re: This is what Sony said about the future A7sIII: It will have 4k60p and 10bit 4:2:2 and exceed expectations!

There is a niche for a tiny little mirrorless camera that shoots decent video internally. When I want higher quality, I shoot on a cinema camera like the Canon C300 MkII. Not everyone wants to use an external recorder setup. That's part of the point of buying something tiny, portable, with internal recording, etc. You just pick it up and it works pretty well, and there's a lot of auto options (AWB, ISO, focus.)

Re: New Lithium-Sulfur Battery Could Quadruple Camera Battery Life

Of course manufacturers will just make the batteries smaller and give us the same effective mediocre battery life.

Re: Leaked: Is this the first image of the new Sony A7sIII ???

Anyone else concerned/excited it might have XEVC compression? I like getting double the quality for the same data rate, but computer hardware is behind on H.265 encoding, and right now everything I edit with H.265 crushes my computer. (DJI cameras/drones, iPhone.) Yes, I know: proxy workflow, transcode...but I'm on quick turnarounds and I film a lot of multi-cam setups. I love bering able to import, sync, and edit immediately, which I can do with H.264 or ProRes, even in 4K multicam sequences.

Re: Sony a7S III Can Shoot 4K/120 and Uses Built-in Cooling Fan: Report

It's probably going to have the new Sony IMX521 quad bayer (effectively) 15MP image sensor, which means no 6K, but high frame rate options, bit depth, color subsampling, and interesting potential for HDR shooting. They may also pair it with Sony's new H.265 codec called XEVC (if it's ready in time,) which would mean much more efficient encoding.

Re: Sony manager confirms again Sony a7S III camera is still in development

I think they're being honest about the reason for the delay. a7S III will likely have their new quad bayer IMX521CQR sensor, and use the new XEVC codec, both of which are new developments.

Re: What If the Upcoming Sony a7S III Uses CFexpress as Recording Media?

Google this sensor: Sony IMX521CQR. That's likely what's going to be in the a7SIII. It's quad bayer, so it acts as if it's 15MP with large photosites, but with less cross-talk, and some interesting HDR options. Unlikely to support RAW internally, but at least 10bit 4:2:2 4K 60p and high speed HD. Perhaps a higher bit depth option, like 12bit. Exciting possibilities. Only thing I have mixed feelings about is the new codec Sony is working on, XEVC. It's much more efficient, but these h.265/hevc codecs are very tough to edit with. There's not as much hardware optimization for them yet, so I'm anticipating a lot of transcoding this footage. No reason to go 8K on an alpha series camera. It can't handle the processing and nobody wants it yet.

Re: Is Sony’s Pace of Innovation Actually Hurting the Photo Industry?

Prosumer digital photography equipment market is in steep decline. Previously it was speculation about 6K or 8K and big pixel count sensors. None of that made any sense. 4K/60p, HDR, and global shutter are in line with reality. I'm still waiting for more latitude in the image: 4:2:2 and/or 10-bit video. These cameras all look great if you nail the exposure and white balance. If not, then you're screwed trying to color grade.

Re: Lighting on the Fly

If they're facing each other like in an interview, then cross-key lighting is the simplest (you can Google the setup.) Ideally, you want sources that can reach a good distance, but also you'll want to control the spill. The best is 2 big softboxes with egg crates on them. There are cheap "interview lighting kits" for a couple hundred dollars. Professional ones would start around $3,000 for something like an ikan Rayden 3-light kit.

Re: Canon: An 8K EOS R Camera is On the Way

So you can't give me internal 10-bit 4:2:2 HD recording or any kind of internal raw recording, but you're going to have 8K? Is it possible this is the same cloud formation, but it moved, and was duplicated in the final composited image (either in-camera or in Photoshop.) In that case, it would not have been cloned (so you might not see artifacts of manipulation,) but a multiple exposure. So it would still be a manipulated image because that never existed in real life.

Re: Here’s the First Footage from the New Kodak Super 8 Camera

Wow, so much hate in these comments. I just see this as one quirky tool in my kit. Like a vintage photo lens that flares a certain way, one I might pull out for a shoot I think that would work for. I would probably prefer to get it from a rental house, so I could have 2-3 on hand for a production. I wouldn't want to depend on a single unit for a whole day of shooting. But it seems like fun. It's nice to handle analog sometimes. I still shoot 35mm stills from time to time.
