20 years later they tried to do Eurovision, the song festival that should have been a natural fit for its layers of camp, queerness, gimmicks and crazy.

Alas, they, of course, tries to represent Sweden, and Sweden takes Eurovision *seriously*. Their entry was all fluff, gimmick, and lipsync, and just on the wrong side of trying to coast into the competition on reputation. They went down in flames in the qaulifiers.

I don't think isolating it would work. The product will fail if it doesn't make the wearer look stupendously smart, in all possible meanings of the word smart. It's failure will not be about lack of aspiration from the middle classes, but lack of respect from fellow travellers.

You certainly have a point about settling-in, because when mice were adopted there was a lot of talk about mouse-arm pain, and there was a lot of adjusting and buying peripherals and instruction about ergonomic desk set-ups. Last night I thus had the idea for an SNL joke-commercial for a big block of foam to strap to your arm right arm so the arm would rest on the desk when you pointed on the desktop touch screen.

And argh, I could do a search in ACMs CHI (Computer-Human Interaction, what UX used to be called) Digital Library if I hadn't let my subscription lapse. In general, the pattern is that users will choose the short-term easiest behavior even if long-term it has slightly negative results, and pain slowly building up counts as very long-term. So if a user with a convertible starts out doing a lot of tapping and not knowing the mouse, they will continue to tap in desktop mode, and then slowly, as they are shown short-cuts one by one, replace.

I have, BTW, I have been running dev previews on a VM on my MacBook. As a UX person I have both been very appreciative of what they have been trying to do, and not impressed with the result.

Seems to be primary only for certain gestures, and there may be non-obvious key-combos for it. That you had to *know* where to mouse to see controls already meant we have to educate users who might not be as proficient, but now we need to make sure they know key-combos as well and warn them from extended touching. Ugh.

Well, reading over comments here and on Y has been instructive: I may have been paranoid in that Microsoft seems to have made non-touch use-cases fully functional. Remains the question though why everything Windows 8 being released is so touch-enabled, and whether using non-touch becomes the dominant way to do things--I have noticed older users have issues learning keyboard shortcuts, and reviewers are not happy with some of the mouse gestures necessary. I myself had a tough time switching apps in the metro environment with my track-pad.

But I hadn't even considered the Android convertibles sucked at this.

I will make an ammend about surface, I obviously got that wrong. But I disagree that multi-modal is an alleviation of bad habits per-se, as long as you have one good one, and from what I have seen, many average users do not know their keyboard combos, and not much the environment teaches them to you, in the same was the environment does not teach you to mouse over the edge and then down to see your apps. Either all the clued-in people start teaching Mom-andPop (or in my case, grandpa and grandma) or arm pain happens.

There is a very big difference between powerless people getting together and saying "Let's do this together and we will look like this and we will talk about ourselves this way, that cool?" and a privileged group telling a powerless group "_You_ do this and _you_ will look like this and we will talk about _you_ that way. Surfacing the concept of access controls with the Circles construct has led to my G+ page already having more personal thoughts and feelings posted on it than I ever read on Facebook. If I blot out my geek friends' discussion of googlepoz itself, my stream feels more genuinely interested and sharing than facebook, which feels very much like performance these days.

I am liking it. I do not see 600 million people going over to G+, but that is fine with me, because what I am seeing now is pretty intimate and has little overlap with facebook. It is, for now, two different crowds.
