I contend (and to be clear this is just a feeling I have, not based in fact or anything) that HBO will eventually offer subscriptions sans the cable requirement.

Re: Skype Reveals Android Security Risk

Thank you, will add a link -- I was moving yesterday and didn't see the original story just the Skype post -- thanks.

Re: Skype Reveals Android Security Risk

And that wasn't the intention, the original title was actually "Skype Reveals Potential Android Security Vulnerability" -- which I think is accurate considering this difficult situation to explain int he headline. Still, I see your point. The vulnerability was real in the app however, because Skype wasn't properly encrypting or sandboxing off its data, it was available for other apps to access. That's a genuine problem and something that is certainly not restricted just to Skype. Lots of app developers (and by proxy, users) don't ever consider how data is stored and how accessible it might be in the file system itself.

Re: How HTML5 Is Influencing Web App Development

Yeah that's very true -- browser compatibility is a problem but it's getting better all the time. At Mix, Microsoft demoes IE 10 and that promises to be even better than IE 9 as far as standards support goes. The WebKit Nightlies put Safari on par with Chrome for HTML5 support and Aurora from Firefox will let developer and users who love to play with new stuff test the upcoming additions more quickly.

Re: BlackBerry PlayBook Enters the Tablet Race [REVIEW]

Fair point -- the mini-HDMI cable isn't quite so household, however. I mean, I know I didn't have one to do my own test (and I like to think I have every cable known to man of some variety -- for whatever reason, I didn't have any mini-HDMI -- scores of full HDMI, but no mini cables) and getting one at Best Buy (if you can't wait for Monoprice to ship) will be a $20 excursion. But yes, the fact that it's a standard cable is a total advantage.

Re: BlackBerry PlayBook Enters the Tablet Race [REVIEW]

Yeah I'm with you -- the lack of 3G is really not an issue when you can tether with your phone and Wi-Fi is ubiquitous. Last year, I got a 64GB iPad 3G. This year I opted for the Wi-Fi only version because I can tether with my iPhone. I could also set up a hotspot with my Android phone or iPhone with the PlayBook -- so that doesn't bother me at all.

The big kicker, for me, aside from the questionable nature of this multi-faceted app SDK approach, is the lack of native communications apps from the start I'm sure they'll come, but it just really hinders using the device for work productivity when you are forced to use it, at least now, with a BlackBerry to get the most out of it.

I think RIM is showing promise with this device and that QNX is a great choice for software going forward. Getting developers on board to deliver and build fully native apps, however, is going to be something I think they'll struggle with, and unfortunately, native apps still matter quite a bit.

Re: Is UberMedia Developing a Twitter Competitor?

Jaiku, Pownce, FriendFeed, Cliqset...

Re: http://filmgirl.tumblr.com/post/4579820813

Yeah, I mean, I agree that on paper, it seems like a total win for every reason you stated. The problem is in execution. Even if we were to assume Windows had a fantastic tablet experience (it doesn't), the jarring aspect of having to choose what OS to boot to (or default to) and then figuring out, oh I want to do this but I'm in the wrong mode, now I have to reboot, will get old.

Fast. It's the same reason that those quick-start Linux desktops that are built into the system ROM have never really been that popular. Yeah, it's a neat trick but how often is it really useful. I have BootCamp on my Mac because I sometimes need to test Windows in native Windows, but 99% of the time my Windows usage is in a virtual machine. Even then, interoperating between file systems is a PITA -- and that's with the most recent developments by Parallels and VMWare.

Re: “The Governator” Gets Animated [VIDEO]

Seriously? My parents are really odd luddites -- they both claim to be total technophobes (though my mom loves her iPad) but have actually been on-trend for most things. By the time I was in kindergarten (1988), both of my parents had car phones and my dad had one of those Motorola bag phones. It's nuts to remember how small the Nokia 5100 series seemed back in 1998.

Re: Rebecca Black Is Kind of Awesome — No April Fooling

But she still read the copy -- and her joke delivery is actually pretty decent. She has good timing. She's not a professional but I wouldn't be surprised if she got a TV show out of this. She's certainly no worse than Miley Cyrus or the other tweens on the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon.

Funny or Die gets huge props for taking this on but I think Black deserves credit for being willing to roll with the punches and embrace the joke. A lot of people twice her age (like Brenna said) wouldn't have the guts to do that.

Re: 5 Mobile App Trends You Can’t Ignore

Yeah NFC was on my short list. I think, however, it's likely going to be later in the year and into 2012 before we really start to see the fruits of that labor. Not just with phones that support it (remember, only Android 2.3 introduced support and Android is the only OS shipping en masse with NFC support, AFAIK), but also with locations that support NFC beyond pilot programs.

Re: Firefox 4 Has Arrived

Great find!

Re: Photo App Faceoff: Lenses, Tilt-Shift, Collections & HipstaPaks

Yeah I'd love that too! Look at Wallaby -- it's in Labs and an experiment, but it's a very cool way to reuse your existing Flash assets to create HTML5 animations using CSS3, jQuery and HTML5.

And while it's true that the cool stuff of HTML5 is possible thanks to CSS3, SVG, JavaScript and so on, I don't think that's a detriment -- I think that's something in HTML5's favor.

It isn't an either or scenario -- but the I do think HTML5 is going to reshape the web, especially on next generation devices -- and that's really exciting.

Re: How JavaScript & HTML5 Are Remaking the Web

That's amazing -- thanks so much for the link!

Re: How JavaScript & HTML5 Are Remaking the Web

Thanks Jeremy! Tablets WILL support WebGL. Chrome, Safari, Opera and Firefox 4 work on Windows XP, etc.

And yes -- I think Wilderness Downtown is totally impressive even if you've seen Flash. It generates a moving and perspective map of your own neighborhood and puts applies an awesome real-time filter and transposes it to the background. It would be a stunning work of multimedia if it were Flash based. See also: Johnny Cash project where you could draw your own frame to contribute to the project - that was Flash and was amazing too.

Re: Hands-on With iOS 4.3 [PHOTOS]

Sadly, that was just in the early betas -- it will be making an appearance in future iOS versions, however, but not 4.3.

Re: How the WordPress SEO Plugin Can Help Your Blog [INTERVIEW]

That's the cool thing, the plugin can import your old settings over and you shouldn't lose rank on anything.

Re: ∞ About this new MobileMe service

So what you've described is called Libox -- the iPhone app just got an update last week. It uses caching and low-level cloud storage and does the streaming/transcoding from a desktop computer. It works quite well, actually.

Real Networks Unifi is a hybrid of this model nit it also includes a cloud storage quota (for $X a month), Unifi was one of the best things I saw at CES 2011.

I'd hope Apple would be able to offer a value beyond Unifi or Libox (or even Zumocast), because if it doesnt, purchased video confenf not withstanding, I'm not sure what MobileMe would offer over the competition
