Livestreaming

Really interesting post JayJay.

Bizarrely, my very first IRL conversation with Stu Johnson was actually about something very similar.

I explained to him that in my last job, whilst at work, I would often listen in on the audio streams of things that interested me, as to me it provides a much better experience of what's being said and is easier to follow than a twitter stream. It wasn't about finding time - it was just about being able to multi-task.

I just plugged in my headphones and ran the browser in the background. In reality it's not that different to listening to music or the radio whilst at work.

I know generally this sounds like I'm listening to a broadcast but for a keynote isn't this what everyone in the audience is doing anyway. Occassionally something would strike me that was enough to drive me to make a comment or ask a question.

My experience got me thinking about how best to run conversion activities for prospective students and it led me to recap a lot of the then live streaming services for accessibility.

The services are obviously changing all the time, as is the technology that can be used to broadcast or converse and group and moderate the conversations. I've mentioned moderation as unfortunately it might be necessary in order to fight the inevitable spamming that will happen if an event is successful or to keep an event focussed. I also think the Nature article actually raises some really valid points and personally I'd draw comparisons here with breaches of copyright at gigs, sporting events and the like.

I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more about your experimentation in this area.
