Yeah, after a few days of no requests it has unlocked for old versions for me. I also have a feeling it's IP-dependent in some cases too. If you are getting old-versioned on one address, changing the IP has helped clear the state a few times, but in some cases eventually started applying the limitation to that new address too. Hard to be sure.

I haven't been able to catch what specific thing triggers this state, but thinking back, I wonder if it happens if you are doing lots of reading and no sending of stories/snaps, so the server gets suspicious about a "lurker". Another theory is that it happens if you sign in repeatedly (esp if from diff addresses, which triggers that "did you get hacked?" email)

I guess they are monitoring for "irregular" usage pretty carefully now.

The issue may be around the versioning of requests. If I use a iOS 7 device to sign in to Snapchat, it eventually sets the account into this "Version too old" mode (even without SH being involved), but it usually gets cleared after a few days (or maybe a day?). While the account is in this "semi-flagged" mode, logging in with a more recent version of Snapchat works normally, but it doesn't clear the flag.

I am more interested in the discussion of the creative class and the theoretically more limited opportunities for those people to make a living. Easy to dismiss as a technologist, but it is worth considering if a redistribution of anything took place, and how.

Ryan, having attended a workshop of yours back in 2005, I am a fan of your work.

This post is some smug HN trolling though. I don't think people know that you've worked on this stuff for more than 10 (?) years, sold multiple companies, etc etc.

So it's not so much about how messed up or industrially backward the other people are, it's just that you do good work and after that, you are able to have some extra freedoms.

That's cool, but lets skip the part where you argue that this is very applicable. How much did you work on your very first project?

So awesome to hear from you!

I am aware that the banner above the logo is yours - this is why it is not highlighted. As far as the installation issue, when I hit cancel I was sent back to my feed. Clicking the Guardian link on my feed page again, I was again sent to the app install prompt (there is a small chance I may have closed the tab and later clicked the story again, if so, I apologize).

I realize that it's possible to opt out of this process, but after posting this, a few of my friends said that they have opted to Google search for the story headline + "Guardian" to access the stories that appear in their feeds, as this process was confusing to them. If people go to such lengths, this process cannot be THAT simple, or it being just me.

I also get that the FB controls within your IFrame are not actual ads, but this is merely because FB has gotten away with people not considering these things ads, and that's a discussion for another day.

My broader comment is that Facebook is fucking the Guardian, and because I love the Guardian I think this is unfortunate.
