I think of product development a lot like a simulated annealing algorithm. Hill climb along with some occasional big jumps to make sure you aren't in a local maximum. Instead of testing against random values, though, you have to use instincts and conviction to decide where to jump to (since the results will likely start worse).

Few thoughts:

- One benefit of a remote culture is that it can reward output and value creation over hours. Not sure that outweighs the downsides in an early-stage company, however.

- It's worth noting how just reframing the same decision could have fundamental cultural side-effects. For instance, in the case of the CTO, what if he had said "I'm working hard to get everything you guys need from me done while I work out some personal issues that are more important right now".

Liza, this is a great feature request and we will definitely consider it as we plan out future enhancements for RunKeeper Elite. We've heard a few requests for this kind of "private" sharing, especially around RK Live, so it's definitely on our radar.

To clarify I think the days of building on just one platform are probably over, especially for social products. I just believe that there is room for companies to gain advantage by reversing their platform priority from a design and feature perspective. Much like SuperCell is "tablet-first" but you can still play clash of clans on the phone.

Any area with high startup cost or regulatory burden has the opportunity for "platform first" models. I am thinking specifically of Stripe and Betable in addition to your list.

Billiards, especially 9-ball or straight pool, where you have to balance shots for offense and defense and know when to play each based on your shot probabilities, is very similar to golf in this respect.

You need to choose the right shot based on your overall strategy, then forget about all that and HIT it.

A band like radiohead probably makes around $1 an album on a major label. Here, 40% of their users paid $6 - including overhead that's probably around $5 an album or so. On average, this means that radiohead is making around $2 an album for this including all the ones given away for free.

So even if you give away 60% for free, you still make more than you would from the labels.

Motion capture brought to the webcam. That's pretty cool, even though the animation quality is pretty lacking (but then again, so is feature film "performance capture" too). Given that this runs directly off a webcam, it's pretty impressive, though it's not going to replace hand-keyframed animation for anything real for a while.

I see this much the same way chris anderson sees mp3.com's failures:

Only long tail content is a bad business model. You need the head so that you can draw users, and give people a place to start so they can find the long tail content they will enjoy. If you have only tail content, there's no means for discovery. There's still room for user generated content - some of it is quite good. But without the high end content (youtube's high end content is mostly pirated) there's nothing to draw people in.
