Re: Terminator, I totally agree with you on the casting for Kyle. Dude looks like he stepped off the set of Dawson's Creek. And the whole thing was indeed cheesy. But I'm optimistic future episodes will be better.

Dollhouse was also pretty medicore/teetering on bad. That opening was awful. Don't get me wrong. I was ogling Eliza like anybody else but it was such typical tv for the most part. Party scene with dancing hot girls? I thought I was watching CSI: Miami or something. Also, I did not find her the least bit credible as a hostage/kidnap negotiator. The show didn't really feel Whedon-like except for the nerd in charge character and I like how Amy Ackerman is on the show. I hope FOX gets out of his way, though, because the show has alot of promise. The brief scene where Echo was watching the other girl get zapped was good. I missed it last night but am looking forward to the rest of this series.

Re: What I Did This Weekend: NY Comic Con

"First they were two Baronesses! They rock. You suck."

Its execution wasn't as good as the idea. Perhaps you will realize this one day, a year, a month, or perhaps even a week from now when you pick up your plush pork dumpling and say to yourself, "Why the f**k did I buy this thing?"

And for the record, you have that all wrong. It is *I* who rock and they--the dumplings--which suck.

"Fourth of all, she's basketball because she sort of accidentally commented on this very blog as basketball, and it seems to have stuck around."

What an awesome nickname/handle

Re: Happy 1234567890 Day!

Fanboy week and now this? But is "fine" enough? Under Jobs Apple initiated business, culture, and dare I say life-changing products--creating the historic iPod, successfully monetizing digital downloads on a mass scale from a central on-line store, and creating the remarkable iPhone. If Apple simply sustains or even adds to this that's good, but maybe I'm spoiled--I almost expect the extraordinary from this company. When Apple introduced its latest line of laptops I was disappointed even though by all accounts these are their best portables ever. It takes a singular talent like Jobs to not so much see ahead into the future but to make the future. Who knows--maybe whoever eventually succeeds him has that similar magic DNA in him but it's unlikely. I think at best he's going to be very good. I think Apple is going to be fine but its competitors are also hot on its heels, esp. in the smartphone market. And things can go sour in a flash--it's hard to believe a company who made the hottest cellphone for years is now going down the tubes (i.e., Motorola and its RAZR). Things are unpredictable, but I'll be cautiously optimistic that Apple can continue to be excellent (if not world-changing. That's a high standard to hold someone to, but if any company can continue that, it'd be them).

Re: http://comments.deasil.com/2009/01/16/breakfast-links-de-fingertation-in-court-witch-business-booming-zork-mmo/

I think ol' nybbly here is neologasmic haha

Re: Morning Thought: Splashy Urinals

"There's obviously quantum physics at work in these urinals"

I think it's time you finally go get that Master's in Uro-Engineering

"the splash goes in all directions!"

On second thought, make that a rigorous physical training regimen

"There's also ricochet involved"

Referring you now to Ballistics...

"And apparently I simply have a stream more powerful than all you lesser men."

OK, scheduling you for an appointment with a specialist who treats people with delusions

Re: Morning Thought: Splashy Urinals

nybble, nybble, nybble. You remind me of the baseball player who muffs a routine groundball and then picks at his glove in disbelief. howie here is on to something--I think you need to stop blaming the urinal and start looking at the man in the mirror. Frankly, I'm disappointed in you. Didn't you study trig in high school? Weren't you a math major in college? If you're going to let it rip straight ahead of course there's going to be some splash. But if you direct the stream such that it hits the side of the urinal at the proper angle the splash will not impact you. So next time practice a little patience and experiment with different angles, cosines, etc., depending on how the urinal is constructed. And one last thing--you DON'T need to report your findings to me. I'm sure everything will have gone well. And it doesn't, it's nothing I need to know about.

Re: 2009. I watched Fringe for the first time two weeks ago and I must say I quite liked it, at least enough to watch this week's episode (though it wasn't as good.) michael_natale, I hear ya--this week's episode had ridiculous science (both the moving through solids and esp. the time machine.) Still, it's an entertaining hour and I plan on watching the next one as well. As for Chuck, no thanks. Heroes was good the last two weeks (an eclipse rendered everyone powerless.)

Re: Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh, c'mon. Once the floodgates opened, everybody was jumping back and forth (wasn't there an emo girl-terminator Cameron turned into a pretzel? That was ridiculous. I don't even remember why it was there.) What gets me more, though, is how mortal these new machines have become. Cameron can pretty much go mano-a-mano with anyone. Then she would rip out the chip from the T-888's head and John would set its body on fire. The show was much scarier when these machines were relentless and invulnerable. Now they're just relentless. I guess they had to do that or else John et al would be running away every episode, which would get old and prevent them from their grocery shopping.

I also can't stand the Scottish terminator (she has to be on the list of worst tv show characters ever), though the photoshoot scene with her "daughter" was pretty good in its awkwardness and tension. Her learning (to feign) affection has probably been the most interesting thing about her. That and her hiring of the psychologist, who's already pretty intriguing even though he's totally new.

Regarding Jesse, her lips are kinda plump. Don't get me wrong, full lips = good (see Lima, Adriana) but... well, whatever. I wonder if she's a metaphor of how awful war is. If so, I expect her to get killed by a machine in the present. It would be ironic that she was surviving the War, got so fed up with all the fighting that she had to time travel to get away from it, and then ended up getting killed by a machine anyway. Or, in a less grim scenario, she'll end up fighting alongside BAG and Sarah's crew in the present. So maybe the message is that war cannot be avoided. Or something. I don't know. I'm curious as to how that character/storyline plays out, though, b/c she's a hottie like you said.

Re: Sick Day

I think you should blog about how (not) well you feel.

j/k, get better

Re: Some thoughts on the Apple Notebook event

It felt a bit anticlimactic to me. There's no reference to the product on the homepage at all. Somehow I think if Apple were really into Apple TV they'd be marketing the hell out of it like the way they do with the iPod and iPhone. Is there something going on with the movie studios? Maybe I should read that link you posted...

As for me, I generally like every Apple hardware product they put out but Apple TV doesn't interest me much. I almost never rent movies, I'm fine with watching web video on my computer display, and I haven't gotten into the habit of looking at photographs on a television set. I think if someone were to give one to me for free, sure, I'd certainly use it, but probably not much.

Regarding your blu ray point, that could influence my purchasing decision (to get one) , but there's also something kinda cool about its not playing any "traditional" (physical) media at all. Also, doesn't Sony have power over who gets to manufacture blu ray players? They've been very careful about that to prevent alot of Chinese manufacturers making tons of cheap players that would erode its own sales and profit and those of its PS3. I just don't envision Sony ever giving a blu ray license for Apple to manufacture blu ray players. People are buying PS3s in part for the blu ray player and I'm sure Sony doesn't want to lose that business, esp. considering that the Playstation franchise has seen better days.

Re: Breakfast Links: WiMAX reviews, Superhero 5k & Bueller Reenactment

RE: Superhero 5k -- You wrote: "I have to admit that’s pretty awesome, I’d like to witness such an event"

Witness? I would attach wheels to the bottom of a real surfboard (spraypainted silver, of course). Come to think of it, I don't think I can navigate what is essentially a 7-8 ft. skateboard around a sharp turn.

I skimmed through parts of that YouTube video--surprisingly, I didn't see anyone dressed up as the Flash. Still watching Heroes. Season 2 was definitely arse but I attribute that to the writers strike instead of the writers suddenly sucking so I'm giving them a mulligan. Last month's season premiere wasn't great, but each episode in this young season has gotten progressively better and I can already tell it's going to better than last year (even taking into account the extreme suckitude of Season 2). In case you end up watching it again I won't give anything away, but last episode had a potentially fascinating twist involving Sylar; am curious to see how this particular storyline develops.

Re: the negative reviews of the new season, how can those critics evaluate the show based on only a couple of episodes? Terminator took awhile to get interesting last year; it went from awful at worst and boring at best to being quite good towards the end there.

As for getting my tv back on--I used to watch Prison Break and Smallville (as you may know) and 24 but because I missed so many seasons I can't just jump back in now without going back and watching the previous ones. Who knows when I'll ever catch up. Maybe the shows will be canceled by the time I get around to it all and I'll probably lose interest. I hear 24 has gotten pretty bad by now.

Sanctuary, what's that? Is that on cable? Hey, what's your method of DVR?

In terms of other tv, someone recently recommended Fringe to me. I don't remember what it's about but I'll try to check that out. And Sunday night is baseball!

Re: TV Roundup: Terminator & True Blood

btw, you meant "foosball", though "foodball" sounds like it could be fun as well. ;)

I watched quite a bit of tv before I went to grad school, at which point I had to go cold turkey with the lone exception of Heroes. I've thus since broken my tv habit but this week has been a good tv week for me: an entertaining Terminator featuring its best character (in this episode I actually liked Sarah and John, who might be better suited as supporting characters), a fantastic Heroes (mostly b/c of Sylar), Game 1 of the ALDS with my beloved Red Sox taking Game 1 against a heavlly favored Angels team, the VP debate last night, and more playoff baseball today.

Re: Afternoon Awwwww… Kitty Box Diving!

I really haven't seen enough cat videos to say, but for what it's worth this was by far the best cat video I've ever seen, better than the kittens on crack :D

Re: Terminator Season 2 premier was pretty good

OK, one of these days I'm gonna hook you up with some Vice. Then I read your intro, felt a little bit of a letdown, and ended up watching (part of) the video anyway. Using drugs to get people to watch your cat videos. What's next, sexual innuendo? You have no shame, man, no shame.

Anyway, about the video: this would have been cute if it didn't remind me of mice. Mice do that kind of thing, of course, squishing under and through cracks. And I really hate mice. Perhaps I should watch a different cat video of yours eh.

Re: Terminator Season 2 premier was pretty good

I can't believe I reminded you to watch it and then forgot that it was 8 o'clock so I actually missed the dramatic and important opening sequence. I didn't think I'd be missing all *that* much but apparently I missed the critical plot element of Summer's chip malfunctioning. Of course, it dawned on me soon enough but without having watched that dramatic opening scene first (though not quite as good as the similar one that ended last season's finale) the rest of the show was a bit ho-hum for me, like it was any other episode in the middle of the series. I think I would have been more engaged had I caught that opening, though I did just watch the Hulu video you have in your post. (I said this last year and I'll say it again: whenever a TV show does a five-minute long scene with no dialogue and just music, we all need to give props to Miami Vice.)

Like you, I was bugged by John's angst in this episode but then again, I'm *always* bugged by his angst. I found that last scene where he cut his hair to be a bit humorous. So the dude locks himself up in the bathroom. His mother's calling out to him, slumped outside the door, wondering if he's alright while he's basically ignoring her. Who knows what the hell he's doing in there. Maybe he's tearing the place up, throwing stuff around, punching the wall, or even inflicting self-injury. Turns out he was cutting his hair. But that's not what amused me. The camera does this dramatic pan starting at the floor just inside the door, then the hair on the floor, moving to his feet, going up his body and then to his face in the mirror. I mean, they were totally setting us up for something, right? I was expecting something dramatic. I was expecting to see him with his head completely shaved. When you're PO'd like he was that whole episode, especially after the mental torment he went through regarding Summer and after he pulled off that tough guy move at the end to save her, you would think he'd shave his head because that would have been the proper big hair-related gesture. Instead he just gives himself a trim.

I'm also with you re: John and his mom. I find the show most compelling when Summer and, yes, BAG are in it. Thankfully he makes an appearance with the rest of the team at the end.

And speaking of the liquid terminator--man, I hate that character. She's a caricature. Mrs. Evil. She looks like she stepped off the set of Austin Powers. And the whole bit with her being the urinal that the AI dept. head uses was just tacky. (And it's a good thing for her she morphed in time before he peed on her.)

I'm probably going to watch the entire season. I mean, it can't be worse than the last season, right? Remember how dull the first episodes were? It got good as the season went on. This first show was pretty good but I'm optimistic that it's going to continue to get better.

Re: Moving Day!

Aw man I didn't know about your light issue until recently or else I would have suggested you get one of those artificial sunlight thingamabobs to make your three winters better; I have another friend who works from home and he got this artificial light device and he says it works for him. Of course, the real thing is way better than any machine so it's good that you moved (even despite the freakin awesome location you just left). Anyway, cheers mate hope they didn't break nothin' good.

Re: Breakfast Links: Tropical Long Island Fish, Gym Wii Workout & Knights Templar sue Pope

I have several comments to make as I procrastinate before heading out in a moment:

1. This marks the first time I am actually eating breakfast whilst I read your breakfast links. No sausages, however, meatless or otherwise.
2. My daily workout consists of removing the battery from the bottom of my laptop with a coin and going through a ridiculous series of steps which involve doing a jig before the computer will boot. Also, simultaneously pressing three keys to force-quit out of slow moving applications. That requires some dexterity and finesse.
3. btw, are you one of those who perpetuate the urban legend that the Vatican houses the largest pornography collection in the world? They don't. I asked. (Kidding.)
