the best in the current era is definitely Ricky Ponting....he has got the most runs in the last decade and more importantly he has helped his team win big matches unlike sachin...
As for the greatest ever, its impossible to compare...earlier pitches were uncovered and there was no protection..that makes the achievements of people like bradman and gavaskar all the more credible..
But certainly Viv Richards was the most fearsome ever....

Even Aus never make any arogant comments on any team...Shane warne said yday that bangla are a good side and shld not be taken lightly...on the field aus play their cricket hard and fair..off the field they respect their opponents..aus aggression and spirit is what i like..they beat pak after conceding a 206 run lead in first inning...thats their fighting spirit

the pot of excuses opens and a new one comes out....missing dravid and laxman...stop crying..learn something from aus..they beat india in india with 6-7 of their top players missing....they won the champions trophy without clarke, bracken and haddin..
for that matter, look at SA rt now..they just had their coach fired and the selection panel sacked..they have come here without a permanent head coach...still they perform and dont give excuses...
and dravid's unavailability is dhoni's and selector's mistake..they shld have rested dravid and sachin in the ban series..that was the right time to try out youngsters and also keep the seniors fit for this important series..
and dhoni himself was against the seniors sometime back...he wanted only youngsters in the team..nikal gayi sab hekdi...

india doesn deserve even no 2 position...india has just been winning at home and against bangladesh....india got the no 1 ranking as a gift coz aus performance had come down in last couple of years...now aus are back on track to be no 1, SA no2 no3 is a close fight between eng and india.. seriously india being no 1 with such performances(only winning at home on sub standard tracks) and such a bowling attack is a shame on cricket and ICC...
smith is correct..SA have won test series in Eng and Aus, so for the time being they deserve to be no 1...eventually it will be Aus..
