Of course, but the change makes an entry into two separate submissions to StumbleUpon - which essentially kills ALL the success my site has had in social media to date. New reader votes on the new URL, not the one that delivered them. That leaves it stillborn.

For example:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/...
http://www.stumbleupon.com/...

This might seem like nothing, but it is a big deal and it is really frustrating to see from a service I have been totally impressed with until now.

How could you make such a major change with no announcement whatsoever or even considering something as fundamental as the major sources of traffic (digg, stumbleupon, etc)?

It's disappointing.

This messes up any success sites may have had with services like Digg and Stumble Upon because it divides the new viewers from the old - essentially starting everything over.

It would have been really great to have known about this in advance, or been able to opt out. It's creating all sorts of problems, in addition to the Disqus hang ups. Obviously it's a great idea but not without consequences to the people that depend on Tumblr.

It is hard to argue that its "fadish" nature wasn't what brought us higher traffic at first however the traffic has stabilized (even without updates) and continues to bring in steady daily revenue. Also, I would note that the price is significantly below the 3x12 month revenue.

Are you basing the critique just on sticker shock?

It seems that less than three times 12 month trailing revenue is reasonable.
