The thing I remember most about Jesse Barfield is his powerful arm. He threw with accuracy and runners would give it a second thought before challenging his arm. In the mid to late 80's, he was one of the league's leaders if not the leader in assists. He was also in some pretty good company in the OF with the guy everyone loved to hate, George Bell and Lloyd Moseby.

Re: Cards from the Diamond

The “Spaceman” Bill Lee…where do I start! My fondest memories of the somewhat controversial left hander are not from his Major League Baseball career. I remember when the Montreal Expos released Lee in 1982 after he walked out on the team to protest the release of one of his teammates…Rodney Scott if my memory serves me correct.

The fondest memories of the “Spaceman" are from 1984 to 1987…when Bill Lee played in the New Brunswick-Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League. He played for the Moncton Mets…a senior team about 200km from where I live. When the Mets came to town to play our Fredericton Royals, people would flock to the ball park in hopes of watching Lee pitch! The crowd and the local media absolutely loved the guy as you never knew what the Spaceman was going to do or say. Over the 3 seasons he spent here, his record was something like 40-5!

Bill Lee just cracks me up, whether it is reading one of his books or watching an interview on TV! Good choice by the Baseballisms Team this week!

Re: Cards from the Diamond

I vaguely remember John Montague with the Expos. If I recall correctly, he was a pitcher with the Expos from 1973-1975. If I am correct, he was used mostly as a relief pitcher, but he may have had a few starts. Nothing outstanding comes to mind when thinking of John Montague.

Re: Cards from the Diamond

As a kid, Rusty Staub was my favorite player! I can remember him playing for my Montreal Expos. He was affectionately known in Montreal as "Le Grand Orange". When I first started playing minor baseball, I was a member of the Rusty Staub fan club. My mother tells the story of me carrying my paper membership card with Rusty Staub's signature. I carried the card with me everywhere until eventually the paper card just fell apart!

Since he was an original Expo, it was appropriate that they retired is number, #10!

Re: Cards from the Diamond

This card brings back memories of the Wade Boggs/Margo Adams affair in the late 1980's. I remember Adams quoting Boggs to the media on several players, including George Bell.

According to Adams, Boggs said, ''When they go into Toronto, they have a thing for George Bell, a favorite among Red Sox pitchers. They all hate his guts. He's the most hated man in baseball.''

Re: Cards from the Diamond

The box score...I should have figured this out earlier, but the number of the pitcher in the 8th inning got me hung up! I was thinking must be something with Galvine (#47), but I was wrong!

Here it is wow, it's the box score, "Touch 'em all Joe, you'll never hit a bigger home run in your life!"

Joe Carter hits a 3-run shot off Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams in the top of 9th, final score 8-6 for Toronto Blue Jays 2nd World Series Title - 1993 (Game 6)
