Ms. Duckworth's ideas have been widely criticized for denying systemic inequality in explaining outcomes in education and in life. The idea is that ascribing success to "grit" is more acceptable than older rationales for the so called achievement gap but that it still stigmatizes children who don't succeed without taking racism, sexism, nativism, etc. into account. Michael Lewis' book, The Blind Side is an example of a work that takes a diametrically opposed position. Disguised in a book about football is his fairly radical idea that we are missing out on the incredible talent and effort of many people because of these systemic factors.

Re: No, *I’ll* tell you the answer!

Thanks Jason. This was a thought provoking piece, especially for me right now as I mull over my options. And, although I know this wasn't your intent, it's perhaps the most succinct description of the various forms of entrepreneurship that I've read.

Re: Aaron Hernandez, Sports and Crime

Great point Dave -- I bet the crime rate really is a lot higher than I think it is. Interesting. I got a seven on the quiz but I think that is because I know so little about baseball that I didn't fall into any of the traps set. Interesting! I guess they punish a foul bunt because they want to discourage wimpy bunts? Also true about the double-play. Nice catch. I agree with you about the conversation thing! It's one of the main reasons why we created this site. Although... how could you tell if the mark was left from the catchers mitt or your own last inning when you rested your hand on your hip?

Part two does get a bit more into why there is resistance to the notion but I do think that there's a real objection to be made simply that it wouldn't really improve the consistency of the calls. People are actually reasonably good at this stuff.

I think you're right though-- it becomes jarring when the refs have LESS information than the viewers. That's a bummer.

-e

Re: What is the Most Challenging Ball Sport? It's just got a lot of standing around not doing anything for a sport... Football is definitely up there but I think it may be more physically damaging than challenging. I thought he could really develop into the scoring, slashing, dynamic 3 that is the biggest missing piece from the team. That said, looking back on it I think Billy King really did a great job to get two decent picks and Sasha Vujacic for him. Williams played in only 11 games for Houston and averaged 3.6 points in 7:42 per game.

I suppose it depends what the Nets get out of the picks but I feel like that is pretty good value.

Re: Mid-Game Update: THE MACHINE

Yes!!

Re: The Hockey News: Ken Campbell's blog: THN.com Blog: NHL trade deadline winners and losers

Am I missing something or were the Devils a top 3 winner at least?

Re: Spurs 106, Nets 96: Not Bad, Not Bad At All

Agreed -- although I hope Hump does not end up taking that shot too much more.
