I've spent hours trying to figure out how to remove my Christmas music (a few hundred songs) from my iPhone. Eventually just gave up and removed all the music, and now I'm syncing back about 20 gig of music. And it's giving me errors all the way along. I don't care about the iTunes app as much as I'd like to see better music management on iOS.

If you lose your phone and go to the iCloud site and tell it you lost your phone, location services will be re-enabled until you find your phone. You're right, it's a lot of "ifs", but in practice if you lose an iPhone and you realize it's gone within about 24 hours, it's pretty easy to figure out where it is.

If someone stole it and turned it off, then you won't be able to locate it. But with the activation lock, criminals won't be able to use it either which should make stealing one a lot less attractive.

The iPhone has a built-in "Find my iPhone" feature that you can trigger from a web browser (http://icloud.com) or another iPhone or iPad that makes it start a loud beeping (even if the mute switch is on). I've used that countless times to find a lost phone in my house.

Maxis is taking the same route with SimCity that they took with The Sims where they tried to integrate social aspects into the game. The Sims 3 badgers you infuriatingly to share the details of your game with your friends.

That's not social, that's just annoying. You can't actually play the game *with* your friends, you can just tell them about what's happening in your game.

SimCity takes it a bit farther but it's still not a multiplayer game. It could work perfectly well offline. The social aspects that they're saying it needs to be an online game to support are IMHO the worst parts of the game.

Very happy to see that for $20 you can upgrade a regular Civilization V purchase to the Gold Edition. Buy it on Steam and you get both Mac and PC versions for the same price. Mac App Store of course only gets you the Mac version.

Bell Canada, at least, has services that it offers that are excluded from the regular data usage counter. I don't know if every carrier would be set up to do this.

Has Google demonstrated that they're easily able to fund maps (including street view, satellite and all the related costs) from money they're making from maps? I wasn't aware of that.

Sorry, I'm posting from Canada where data plans are often prohibitively expensive. I guess local experience isn't typical, but here, most of the people I know who have Android devices either have no data plan, or have a minimal data plan that they don't use, because overage charges are expensive.

I had a thought on this, that Google needs Android users to be making use of map data to make that map data profitable, but Android users typically don't have a data plan. It may actually be profitable for Google to foot the bill for mobile map access (similar to what Amazon Kindle does with Kindle books and WhisperSync) to encourage users to start using maps. They need some way to justify their continued over-investment in maps or eventually they're just not going to be able to continue.

Another take on meal planning is MealPlan. http://www.falldaysoftware.... It doesn't do recipes, but it does let you plan 3 meals a day and makes it really easy to type in your own choices.
