It takes a lot more than that. Perhaps it is that invincible, "nothing will happen to me because I live on an Island" mentality that propelled something like this to happen. I want to be angry at this boy's parents but I also want to remain realistic and say that they could have been the best parents in the world. No matter how hard we try, and no matter what values and morals we instill in our children, there comes a point in time when they begin to make their own choices. This boy made a very very bad choice that will haunt both him AND his parents for the rest of their lives. This is not about where someone lives, it is about people across the board using common sense and making good life decisions.

Re: 15-year-old driver kills jogger on Lopez - Islands' Sounder

This is absolutely appalling and horribly tragic. A few years ago my finace was killed by a driver traveling at excessive speeds and the driver was convicted of manslaughter. While I understand that this boy was only 15 and had little driving experience, I believe that he should pay the full penalty for his bad choice. We all, as humans, make mistakes but must, in turn, take responsibility for our actions and pay the consequences. This boy took a human life that can NEVER be brought back and for the rest of their lives, the friends and family of Mr. Jaholkowsky will have a void in their hearts that will never be filled. My deepest sympathy goes out to them and I wish them all of the love and support they will need in a time like this. I am also sending wishes for a healthy and speedy recovery for both the young girl who was struck as well as the 17 year old passenger of the car. My heart goes out to this 15 year old boy and his family and I just pray that they will all have the courage to take responsibility for what has happened and the strength to make it through the rough road ahead.

Re: One dead, two hurt in Lopez Island crash - Journal of the San Juans

This is absolutely appalling and horribly tragic. Perhaps the officers should have paid a bit more attention to the details of who they actually were looking for instead of this innocent man who did not fit the description at all. Granted he had the same name, but there are a LOT of people in this country with the same name and we can't just go on excusing this behavior every time it happens on the premise of the officers being trained professionals. This man must have been terrified with several guns drawn at him for no apparent reason, not to mention the time it took from his schedule to be detained and held for a mistake made on the part of the the officers. And for the record, I am NOT an illegal immigrant, child smuggler, or drug dealer/user. I am a concerned citizen of this country and its feelings of superiority toward law enforcement officials to the extent that they can make severe mistakes and get away with it.
