Interesting piece. I agree with most of it. What is problematic for me is essentially that 1. Oprah has developed a brand that has carried her for decades. She is beloved for many the reasons. She is listening to the wrong people about the Tyler Perry, BFF. She needs informed people saying... Sorry, O, that one note message is the same yesteryear. 2. Real House Wives of ATL, Basketball Wives, Bridezillas, Bad Girls Club is not a brand of programming that I support, but it also exists withing a capitalist society. WAY different than what you think about when you think Oprah. They SHOULD be called out. If you don't like it and decide to create that petition, I will sign it.

"Because it is so much easier to be in awe of the dead." Cornell West, Tavis' running buddy, has also been vocal about his "issue" with POTUS using Dr. King's Bible. They and everyone else can presuppose that MLK's stance on everything, but the truth is all humans evolve. For all we know he might have abandoned Christianity, been caught in a few (more) scandals, or become less liberal... thankfully MLK missed the Internet and a 24 hour news cycle.

On another note, it is one thing to be a journalist and opinion writer and or well-paid academic with claims to the street, but it is entirely different purview when you get facts from the behind the desk. Davis and West can have all sorts of opinion with very little insight as to what is and isn't Obama's MO. Tavis when HAM on him during the election when Michelle offered to attend the SOBU (is that still on?) instead of BO attending himself. His charges and claims at that time from way back when is when Smiley was dead to me... I even tried to forgive him for the Wells Fargo thing. Smiley is clearly no prophet so he can stop hating so hard.

Arguing he is doing this for media or as a platitude suggests an insight to the mind and heart of a man they have chosen not to engage with civility. They have some nerve.

Some think it is impolite to bring up that which we cannot change, though we know that is not we asking for. So me want to remain blissfully ignorant.

We talk about it, because many Americans (the kinds peeved right now) and especially our government are unwillingly to acknowledge the damage slavery did (to Africans and American born citizens [formally chattal] did and continues to do. The American narrative in the US is "bootstraps" narrative, so the poor (and especially the historically legally enslaved poor) are perceived as unwilling to move past their circumstance as opposed to being unable due to a cumulative/ generational deficit.

It's the aftermath of the Civil Rights Movement... you know we all equal now but that doesn't mean equity exists.

The anger at Stonewall in the gay and trans community was a culmination of treatment by law enforcement in general. It was not only about the specific day in question it was about a pattern of harassment and ill-treatment from those paid to protect.

I don't think it rose to the level of a controversy, this is not to say that the discussions had weren't thoroughly interesting. ie: the notion of historical representation as "emotional" triggers for some African Americans. Even some of the discussions about her being a sell-out were interesting to me which is why I thought coming here might get some new ideas percolating.

I can't lie I thought the commercial was a Dave Chapelle skit. And I was uncomfortable, too. Mad? No. Then again, I like Mary J Blige but I don't that have that high a standard. I can say without out question that she still can't walk in high heels which disturbs me greatly.

Moving on...
