That shows you how far removed we are from where we were only 10+ years ago when there weren't cell phones everywhere!
I recently heard someone remark about our current economy that "flat is the new up." aren't we saying the same thing about our lives?

of course there is another real issue here and that is that people have begun to expect a quick reply to any inquiry. so if you're not eternally available you run the risk of hurting your business. that's a real concern. and I don't think that's going away anytime soon. especially not in this economy.

Re: Take out the earpiece if ur not using it.

hilarious. sheryl, this is awesome!
I feel like the world is getting so self-centered that by year 2020 we will have begun a backlash on technology. we'll actually want to go out to a bar and grab a beer with a friend instead of sending him one through facebook. we'll actually want to go to a shopping center instead of buying online. And movie theatres will reopen so we don't have to only view things on our phones.
But that age of enlightenment will only last for so long because by nature we'll want to enter the rat race again. And in the rat race, there is no time for getting to know one another.

Re: Force them to have an opinion about u

Thanks for the feedback, Cassandra.
I really attempt to write about real life situations and avoid lab-like, data-ridden posts about things that "happen in a vacuum." I say that so you don't get the impression that I live in some bubble and don't realize that people make snap judgments based on first impressions! ;)

If it is in fact the case that people judge books by their covers, then is there something wrong with taking a chance from time to time and switching the cover to try to elicit a different first impression?
Clearly if your "book is selling" then there's no need. But if not, why not take a chance? The result can't get any worse than "not working".

Re: Force them to have an opinion about u

Thank you, Gracie.

Re: Force them to have an opinion about u

Ah, I think there was some miss communication happening in cyberspace (my bad).
I was saying to you, Louise, that unfortunately a time may come when others will see your success as invading on their territory. I wasn't stating that you had done anything wrong at all.
Keep making the world interesting. I like it.

Re: Force them to have an opinion about u

If I recall correctly, I'm fairly certain we passed the card over to our booking agent who was with us in Florida at the time. So we never even called David ourselves.
Actions speak louder than words, and David was good to his word and booked us many times to play in front of Drivin' N' Cryin'. We became better friends as we spent time backstage at each show.
By the way, we've jokingly pulled the "business card" stunt on people several times over the years. We don't own it as well as David did though. We crack up and tell the person we're kidding and proceed to keep the card (as opposed to giving it back to them with a piece of leftover meat attached like David did to us).

Re: Force them to have an opinion about u

Thanks for the feedback/input, Louise!
Let me ask you a question if I may... It appears as though you succeeded on only your second attempt at taking a chance and forcing someone to have an opinion of you. Why is it then that you are so quick to add, "although I probably won't be risking my career again"? Did it not yield the results you wanted? Why wouldn't you try it again?
You so eloquently stated at the end of your post that, "as long as you don't step on any toes or things with a mean heart, there's plenty of room and direction for us all if you aren't afraid to take a chance." I'm not a psychologist (nor do I play one on TV), but it sounds like your earlier statement was your instinct to want to return to a safe place (ie, not take chances), while your later statement reflects where you'd like to be. Go with showcase showdown #2!
And "stepping on people's toes" is very subjective. There are unfortunately many actresses that will see your success as stepping on their toes. I think it's important to make sure that you focus more on the "kind heart" than the stepping on toes. A kind heart will keep you from intentionally stepping on toes and will help you rise above the false claims of those with ego-toes.

Re: Force them to have an opinion about u

if you actually read my blog, I'd say you're already taking some chances!

Re: U need to know BEFORE the data comes out.

Thank you so much for your feedback, Miriam!

As I wrote this latest blog entry I was certain I would receive feedback such as yours stating that studies do have relevance. In an effort to keep my blogs somewhat short, I have the made the decision to do my best to make a point and then get out of the way. If I wanted to cover every base and make sure that every blog entry was perfect it would A) take me forever and most likely cause me to not write and B) not leave open any room for great comments such as yours!

I'm not a scientist, nor do I play one on TV. I am however attempting to use this blog as a home for observations I've made both from my personal experiences as well as those of others. Whether they be of a business nature, about personal relations or even a few health tips I've picked along the way, this is the place I hope to share them.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

-Evan
