Well, it's all genuinely lovely but it's a bit of a non sequitur isn't
it? Like Francis Collins coming across a frozen waterfall (frozen in
three parts: triune, naturally) and falling to his knees. I think the
problem here is that religion has always enjoyed first claim to the
numinous, and the transcendent, so those feelings just *must* be
supernatural because what else is there? Personally, I'm hoping to reach the promised land on a carpet of prescription drugs. Curiously, my spell check wants to amend non sequitur to non-spiritual. Is this thing sentient?

I'm not familiar with the original - something about Bono makes me want to dash for the safety of my mother's hem - but I'd walk over broken shards to hear a new Depeche Mode recording. Dave Gahan's voice really has leaped upwards in quality these past few years (has he kicked the cigarettes?) and the results of Martin Gore's obsession with purchasing antique synths can be heard again throughout this track. If anything this has made me want to scratch even more the itch that starts around three days after a Depeche tour concludes. Get back in the studio!

Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who observed that to choose to debate one Baker is unfortunate, to debate two is carelessness? Perhaps not. I think it is indeed possible to aggregate the average of competing ideas - here one offers Clinton's risible triangulating and the failure of Blair's Third Way as evidence that it can - but furthermore it appears to me we will miss a crucial point if we do not acknowledge that the policies forged (extruded, more like) in the crucibles of our debating chambers are already influenced by the dominant ideology of neoliberalism, diluted with a kind of nebulous managerialism. It's a trite and quotidian observation but one that needs repeating: our major political figures are increasingly indistinguishable from one another, with only minor cosmetic and manufactured differences in unimportant areas. This is precisely why I find mainstream politics so arse-paralysingly dull. Increasingly I find it hard to distinguish between a major policy announcement and the introduction of dress-down days on Friday.

One example I think lends credence to the suggestion that much in modern politics is an unsatisfactory averaging of ideas: in 1998 the Blair government introduced tuition fees for students attending university. These were initially set at £1000 a year. Here we have the averaging of two ideas: an ostensibly social democratic party instinctively wanted to increase participation from those with lower socio-economic backgrounds but the policy was suffused with the neoliberal Third Way agenda, copied from Clinton, of which Blair was so admirable. Thus it wasn't acceptable that the state should cover the cost of widening participation in higher education and students would be required to take on loans. Over the course of the next decade fees motored to £3290 per year. What dissent there was largely came from outside the mainstream political sphere, with the notable exception in 2009 of Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, who famously signed a pledge not to increase fees further should his party be elected. With the formation of David Cameron's coalition government in May 2010, legislation was introduced to increase them further to £9000 per year, voted through with the assent of Nick Clegg and his Liberal Democrats. Earlier this month, Labour leader "Red" Ed Miliband promised to reduce fees to £6000 should his party be returned to government in 2015. And that, as they say, is that. Not one major mainstream British political party is apparently capable of envisioning a policy that does not involve the administering of deeply unpopular tuition fees: the Conservatives got their increase, the Liberal Democrats rolled over once they were in government and were only ever prepared to pledge not to increase them anyway and the supposedly left-wing option, the Labour Party, not only introduced them in the first place but can now only propose a reduction to twice the level as when they were hoofed out of power last year.

Daring to comment on a Mills thread is rather like putting on a pair of day-glo shorts and going for a paddle in the Trevi Fountain: it'll only end in tears. Oh hell, I'll give it a go. You say that metaphysics "cannot sustain or console us because we author it" but then go on to state "[t]his differs from the religious solution, which gives purpose from a mythologized past." But that solution is man-made too, isn't it? So am I missing something?

I decided to walk into town this morning - hey, I've lost 3 stones since last summer! - so when I saw a guy collecting for Pakistan I chucked my £2 bus fare his way. Later on, I saw him again, this time confronted by a fat sack of shit with four kids in tow. "You should be helping people here rather than abroad," was the general thrust. It was hard to decipher her thick-as-fuck whine from genuine frontier gibberish. Undoubtedly she's unemployed and happy to live off the rest of us whilst pushing fat-headed sprogs out of her slack flue. So, remembering this post, I vowed to come home and donate online. I'm happy to say I did.
