sure, cross-posting is good. also, from twitter and other places, there seems to be a growing discussion of "where to from here" -- lots of people want a lot of what FB does, but without the privacy issues. Might be a good thing to seed the convo over there?

i'm planning on collecting both, for those who plan to actually delete, and for those who are deactivating for the day in solidarity but who aren't actually getting out. So keep the links coming! (and if anyone else is blogging about this, I'd love to see those posts too)

Hey, everyone has a different cost/benefit analysis. Mine has tipped over, yours hasn't (yet!). But even if this makes people more aware of all the opting out they have to do to get back even SOME measure of control over their own privacy, I'd still count it as a win.

this really hit home for me this morning when i glanced at my tweetfeed, thought "gee, that tweet sounds familiar..." then realized it was the tweet I had just posted.

yes, i didn't recognize myself there for a second. my tweet was just one in an entire sea of black, completely unremarkable and unrecognizable! *facepalms*

not answering your question first, but raising a point from earlier - immediate, yes. accurate? Well, one of the key skills a journalist (is meant to) pick up is how to be objective -- to take multiple subjective viewpoints on a situation and tease out the nuggets of factual information they contain. This is not to say that the twitterers were lying through their teeth -- it was just that each individual twittering about it was adding one subjective position. It's the raw data, not the final news report. But, as you not, these reports take time. To rely on the tweeted information is to rely on your ability to be your own filter and not get a pro in to do it for you :)

As for your question -is it only an issue at all because twitter is so new, so mobile, and so without prior experience we can substitute in to help us understand what's happening?

a colleague over here commented on the NZ elections that "after Tuesday, it's like watching a kindergarten run an AGM." US presidential elections really are an awesome spectator sport ;)

wrote on the fly - was trying to keep myself awake (that and I wasn't expecting that last session, so I didn't recharge the iPod over lunch. i haven't reviewed the recording yet, but I'm pretty sure it turned itself off halfway through. i was thinking about it more in terms of reducibility and cohesion - separating content from channel from medium from context....i think

its one of those vague, half-formed thoughts - but i think i think i'm thinking about not the 'information' that makes up the music, but the totality...possibly.

I think you're on the money there (that or they are just stalking you). The bebo is an adjunct to the lectures, not a core component. Your _presence_ in the lecture theatre was what they associated Bebo with, and with that gone (and not replaced) we see a drop in site activity.

Kind of the inverse to the "if you build it they will come" argument, I guess ;)

Barry I don't mind so much (at least he ropes his students in, makes them do the research, then cites them). It's these guys who....lazy? egotistical? Not key scholars in their fields, and working in areas where there are plenty of alternative citations.

Of course, I could just be extra-cranky today. I need sugar before I go deal with the postgrads :)

i may have to take you out to lunch and pick your brains re: tumblr (its on my To Do list) and generally catch up (how's the thesis progressing, btw *g*) - also, it seems this stuff has stopped flagging replies via email again.

i looked at that tweet thing, tried to sign up, something went wrong, and i drifted off to do other things. maybe next time i'm uber-bored :)

I've been following the Welsh version of this story (5 girls, 4 deaths, 1 in critical care). I'm glad they clarified that, despite the name, Suicide Girls isn't about suicide.

I'd love to see a story that covers the more complex social factors (I mean, if they're all from the same peer group, then it doesn't matter how they communicate, if there is something causing feelings of depression or hopelessness in their environment, then yeah you're going to see the same behaviours replicate. Bebo is a channel of expression, not a cause of behaviour). In the book 'The Tipping Point,' the author discusses a case in Micronesia (iirc) a few decades ago. Suicide in this community was virtually unheard of, then one young lad in a position of social authority topped himself, and the next thing you know, you had a spate of suicides, all sharing common facets. No SNS required.

Of course, taking a more nuanced approach would mean acknowledging a whole bunch of nasty and gnarly social, cultural, and generational issues that most news editors probably don't want to engage with for a variety of reasons. So let's blame this Bebo thing, yeah.
