I kind of regret buying the Asus 1000HE even with 9.5 hours battery life instead of the sexy looks of the HP netbooks

Re: Samung launches WiMAX enabled NC10 netbook in Russia

In Soviet Russia, Wimax Netbook's surf you.

Re: A closer look at the Asus Eee PC 1000HE keyboard

I am receiving my 1000HE today. I bought it instead of the Samsung NC10 Special Edition because Samsung removed multi-touch from the trackpad. Also, it's difficult to justify the $500 price on NC10 SE (that's Amazon's $469 price + tax). $375 for a netbook is a better deal, which would become outdated technology in a year. (Single-core Atom processors will easily be replaced by the dual-core equivalents in a few years.)

Also, $500 is hard to justify when you can get a full notebook with DVD drive and dual-core processor for the same price (even though it's not small like a netbook, and long battery life)

Re: MSI Wind U115 tested, dissected in Polish

Before everyone thinks this netbook is better than Asus 1000HE and Samsung NC10 SE, consider the following disadvantages to this new MSI Wind:

1) No multi-touch support (it uses a cheaper touchpad)

2) No ethernet port (it uses a USB dongle which slows down your CPU and overall USB speed when accessing the internet)

3) Trackpad is small, and mouse buttons are hard to press (try one in person, and you'll see what I mean)

4) Screen placement is poor (it's almost off center compared to other netbooks)

So in other words, battery life isn't everything. I'm still getting either an NC10 SE or Asus 1000HE

Re: Linux loses more netbook market share

Linux is clearly the superior operating system. Also, how loud is the fan? It's ironic that all the reviews for 1000HE from reputable sources don't even point out these things. 1000HE's competition, the Samsung NC10, has barely no heat on the bottom, and the fan is ultra-quiet, even when CPU is at 100%, for instance.

Re: Samsung working on additional NC10 netbook versions

Is the Samsung NC10 Special Edition (high capacity battery, large touchpad, and glossy screen) considered one of the variations?

In any case, it is strange that only Amazon.com would offer it. I'd rather wait for this CPU to be implemented for potentially 10 hour battery life. What Intel should do is allow you to change CPUs in order to upgrade your netbook. Why should old CPUs in a netbook force you to buy a whole new computer just to get a new netbook?

Re: Samsung NC20 specs, user manual uncovered

The rumored price was $600+, which also reinforces the idea that it isn't a netbook.

I think a system like this is meant to compete with the Asus netbook that are over $500 and are thinner and professional looking (forgot the model number, but it has the internals of a 1000H)

Re: Asus may be preparing a new Eee PC keyboard layout

<< I personally use the left shift key more than the right one so this doesn’t bother me much, but it drives some people crazy. >>>

Brad, you make it sound like it's a *choice* whether people use left shift keys vs right shift keys, but it isn't. Having a small right shift key slows down the fastest touch typers

In typing class, when learning to touch type (which is defined as typing at high speeds without looking at the keyboard, and using all fingers to type, not just index fingers) they teach you that when you want to capitalize letters on the *left* side of the keyboard, you must use the right shift key. Likewise, if you want to capitalize letters on the *right* side of the keyboard, you must use the left shift key.

My #1 reason for not owning an Asus 1000H is because of the small right shift key. Statistically, 50% of letters on the left side of the keyboard which need to be capitalized cannot properly because a typist cannot find the right shift key.

So, it is not a matter of preference of whether you use left vs right shift key; rather, it is out of necessity that the shift keys be normal sized.

Anyone who claims that it doesn't matter that the right shift key is small is all right, that they'll use the left shift key.......are obviously hunt and peck typists who use their index fingers and need to look at the keyboard when typing.

Re: Psion explains its trademark position, probably won’t sue me

Here is rule #1 about trademarks: If companies don't immediately sue others over violations, they will LOSE the trademark and cannot sue for future violations.

So in other words, if Psion didn't sue other companies/bloggers over "Netbook" (especially Intel), they have already lost the trademark to Netbook. This is how it works in the United States, and may not necessarily be true in other countries in the world. The cease and desist orders are merely scare tactics which hold little meaning.

(by the way, I work for the government, and deal with lawyers a lot, though I am not a lawyer myself)

Re: First look at the Asus Eee PC 1002HA

Make the right shift key full-size, and only then will I consider buying this. I refuse to buy one with such a small trackpad. It comes with the UK keyboard, which has an oversized enter key, and a small right shift key. If you're a touch typist in the U.S., you will find these two aspects annoying.

Re: 6 reasons Michael Arrington’s critique of netbooks is wrong

Bottom line: If 90%+ of your computer's usage is running only Firefox (or another web browser), then a Netbook would greatly benefit you. You do not need a dual-core processor, 3 GB+ of RAM, DVD drive, etc.

The problem with comparing netbooks with the iPhone/iPod Touch is that they lack keyboards and the screens are so small on the latter. After many hours of using them, they become annoying to use, especially having to zoom in on websites all the time since their screens are so small.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but notebooks and netbooks are apples and oranges, two different markets altogether. There will always be a need for portable LARGER devices which can run Photoshop and video editing software in which the user won't care about the larger size (or may have no choice since they need the extra processing power of the larger laptop). And then there are now people who don't care about all the extra bulk of a laptop and features they'll never use (DVD drive) if 90%+ of their computer usage is merely surfing the web.

Re: Enable Commercial DVD Playback in Ubuntu

The problem with Medibuntu that I personally found is that I couldn't get the DVD menus to work. I know Swfdec and Gnash aren't really reliable flash players, but in my opinion, I feel Adobe's Flash player isn't reliable either.

On many Ubuntu computers I've used, when you maximize Youtube videos while using Adobe's Flash Player, the video becomes very choppy, and it loses frame rate. This has been experienced on both slow and fast computers, so CPU speed has nothing to do with it. On single-core CPUs, the CPU rate reaches 100%; on my dual-core AMD Athlon X2, both cores reach 50%. These same computers do not have these problems while running under Windows XP and Firefox, especially with Youtube videos running on multiple tabs. There are obvious bugs which need to be worked out, and me and several others from the Ubuntu Forum have filed bug reports at Adobe's website.

Hopefully Adobe makes a better Flash player 10 for Linux. If they don't, I'm definitely going to use an open-source alternative next time, no questions about it.

Re: OS X-Like Widgets with Screenlets on Ubuntu (3rd Update) | Tombuntu

harshasv: On my Ubuntu 7.10, Screenlets was installed in Applications ---> Accessories, not in System
