This feels a touche pedantic to me. You'd have been fine with "Very much a film in three acts, its opening takes its cue from WALL-E" and what is "the opening" except another way of saying "its opening." It may not be the most elegant grammar but are you one to judge if you say "one of my most-hated grammar mistakes"??

It's excellent! As good (and ultimately as gloomy) as S1 for my money. I'm sorry if the color-blind casting made the show unwatchable to some. Hopefully, like me, you'll notice it in passing as an interesting creative decision, like slipping bits of modern slang into the dialogue, and move on. To Paul Lamontagne's point, the decision was nothing to do with "historically illiterate zoomers" - it was supported by Hilary Mantel herself.

This is the fairest review I've read so far. It's certainly not Citizen Kane but it was a fun evening's entertainment. Pretty silly and lightweight but underneath that a confident, considered film. And watching an Austen heroine take a piss up against a tree was a welcome novelty to this jaded viewer.

So much of this story is predicated on his ability to intimidate people, whether it's a director trying to keep his cut of a film, a producer trying to do his job or anyone on his staff. Fear. I can't imagine how it must have felt to be one of these young woman alone in his hotel room.

Nah, he was pursuing such a pro-Putin agenda during and after the campaign: drop sanctions for Ukraine invasion, attack UN, attack NATO, inviting the Russian ambassador into the WH for special private friendtimes w/ no US photographers allowed. And if he was in debt to certain people of the Russian persuasion and also circling Trump Tower Moscow as a possible lucrative business deal... It seems impossible that he knew nothing. More likely that, like Chris Christie, he just took a lot of care to keep himself clean while his people went about his business for him.

And of course the USSR was a Republican system (they were the Union of Soviet Socialist REPUBLICS). And of course the DPRK is the essence of "Democratic".

Here's Robert O. Paxton, from "The Anatomy of Fascism" on how Hitler and Mussolini abandoned any socialist ideas they may have espoused on the way up:

"Another supposed essential character of fascism is its anticapitalist, antibourgeois animus. Early fascist movements flaunted their contempt for bourgeois values and for those who wanted only "to earn money, money, filthy money." They attacked "international finance capitalism" almost as loudly as they attacked socialists. They even promised to expropriate department-store owners in favor of patriotic artisans, and large landowners in favor of peasants.

Whenever fascist parties acquired power, however, they did nothing to carry out these anticapitalist threats. By contrast, they enforced with the utmost violence and thoroughness their threats against socialism. Street fights over turf with young communists were among their most powerful propaganda images. Once in power, fascist regimes banned strikes, dissolved independent labor unions, lowered wage earners' purchasing power, and showered money on armaments industries, to the immense satisfaction of employers."
