Tivo is still a better deal record 3 channels whilst watching recorded shows!
Tivo epg is not great has some slight issues and can be a pain!
Sky epg is better!

Just installed youview for my mother and it does take ages to boot up in comparison to the sky and tivo boxes - looks good though and has some innovative stuff that tivo doesnt have - usb ports not working is same as all the boxes sky tivo none of them use the ports but at least talktalk have confirmed they will be used in plans for a coming upgrade!

Problem is the box doesnt use a wireless connection for internet connectivity - not really a good idea anyway but managed to get two free Powerline adaptors after phoning talktalk helpline - not a good idea to have to run a 20 foot rj45 cable from the liviing room to the phone in the hall!

So many negative reviews for talktalk but to be honest i have found them to be rather good in all the broadband installs and tv installs i have supported over the years!
Tiscali were not great and i think thats part of the reason they had problems when they integrated!

Do you have to be with TalkTalk to use the DN370T as I am not,
but need a box to access ITV player etc

Omendata • 10 years ago

No
Looks like someone is already advertising their box on ebay!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/T...

Plug and play - you will need the talktalk internet connectivity/router for iplayer etc though!!!

radeq • 11 years ago

hi i just wanted to ask if im on talktalk plus and i switch to talktalk plus tv is it really a same price or even cheaper?

Recombu Digital • 11 years ago

You still have to subscribe to TalkTalk Plus at the same price, and any TV services are additional to that. There may be some special offers, though.

Tuto • 11 years ago

I have just committed to buy the TalkTalk TV package as well as the phone and broadband deal that I've had for the last 12 months. They persuaded me because it turns out cheaper than currently - even with the box. However, we are currently trying to survive on about 1.6megs download. I am planning to add the fibre option to speed it up soon but I get the impression from the previous posters that if I allow the Bright Sparks engineer to "optimise" the broadband I will have nothing left to run our two small businesses on.
Has anyone managed to stop the engineer "optimising" the broadband to give the TV priority?

Kenrolli • 11 years ago

Hi Tuto I have just had mine installed yesterday but I already had the fibre package (40Meg) and there is no speed lost at all but I'm not sure about being on the ADSL router but I cannot see why it would slow anything down really when you think of it. But if it did I would let TalkTalk know in no uncertain terms that any speed loss would be down to them and should and can be rectified.

Just got one, very please, HDMI to TV, used the SCART to a DVD recorder and can record catch up TV

Had my Youview box 48 hours despite a phone call from TalkTalk informing me that my online TV account was active I have yet been able to access it. Phoned TalkTalk numerous times with no satisfaction. At first they were wrapped up in a system update at the call centre and I was told to call back in two hours. That two hours turned to 3 then 4 and so on, as yet no one has been able to help me. I can't even update the Youview box software which is part of the self install procedure. The On Demand menu does not work, in order to access it I have to press the Y button select On Demand then wait for the error message to show before exiting the menu then go back in select it again and on the second or third try it lets me in. However the TalkTalk Player App is not even installed and this box came from TalkTalk. I am extremely unhappy and desperately wish I had never heard of Youview or TalkTalk let alone signed up to an 18 month contract. My only hope is I can cancel based on not being able to access the TV system and being supplied with what would appear to be faulty goods. If I do cancel my subscription without penalty payments which could be cost of the box (£299) plus the remainder of the contract i.e. 18 months at around £30 per months so thats a total potential cancellation fee of £839.

I am sure there are some TalkTalk customers out there who have a good experience but for me I was happy with my Tiscali TV + and broadband package until they sold out to TalkTalk. No sooner had they done this I lost the HD channels I had which were only freeview back then but still, I also lost my music channels and the broadband service quality went down bank so much it drastically effected my IPTV service.

Based on my personal experience regarding TalkTalk and Youview I would have to say AVOID! If I get my cancellation without penalty payments or have to wait out the 18 month contract (groan) I will never go back to them and shall not recommend them to friends, family or even my worst enemy. Sorry for this very negative report but this is based on my true experiences with these products.

can anybody help//have got a ferguson tv and wish to use the talktalk remote does anybody know the code to convert from ferguson to talktalk hope somebody can help as its a nuicance using both remotes

Anthony Duncan • 11 years ago

Had it for about 3 weeks now and no complaints. Used the Talktalk self install option, very easy to set up and only took about 10 mins . No problems with the box or broadband service since i installed it. As in the main review, it does take a while to load up when switched on but not really an issue. Talktalk player running fine with no buffering. Package boosts are a little expensive and need some tweaking, but overall an excellent service.

smith • 11 years ago

Regret having box installed - catch-up constantly stops and buffers (which my Sony TV doesn't) - so clearly some inferior circuitry here: I expected a Humax box and feel I was conned. Can't get Talktalk to remove the wretched thing without them cancelling my whole contract. Unable to sort channels so as to remove rubbish ones, unable to add external storage, recorded programmes not in files, unable to record caught-up programmes, Talktalk offering of free programmes derisory and appears to be limited to mass-market American crap. To sum up, not worth the space it takes up.

amz • 11 years ago

Hi, i have a sky dish but my pup chewed through my other aerials cable, i have ordered youview as its free with my package but was hoping someone could help me out, will youview work with the sky aerial? Thank You

Cassi Pelucci • 9 years ago

Hi. Mine didn't I had to connect it to the Aerial on my roof.

Kenrolli • 11 years ago

Hi Amz no definately not as the box works through a freeview aerial and not freesat or any other satellite. You need to get a freeview aerial installed, a decent one costs about £90 installed ok!

Simon Raymont • 11 years ago

My broadband speed dropped from 14MEG to 8MEG on install of the TalkTalk Youview, aswell as all the other posters here.

BigFatAl • 11 years ago

when the engineer comes,. he chanegs the profile on your broadband to reserve bandwidth for the tv streaming

Rayc • 11 years ago

what use are the (two) usb ports - would I be able to download saved TV from the 320GB hard drive via these?

Recombu • 11 years ago

The USB ports don't do anything yet. There's room in the YouView spec for them to be used with media players or external storage, but I wouldn't expect it to come along in a hurry.

Tommo • 11 years ago

can you watch bbc 1 and record itv 1 at the same time on the free view channels

Recombu • 11 years ago

On the Freeview channels, it's a twin-tuner recorder so you can record BBC1 while you watch ITV1, or record both while you watch a recording or use the on-demand players

jones'y • 11 years ago

Just read all of your post Jimbob30, my broadband speed has halved too. I've e-mailed talk talk, but had no reply, not on!

jones'y • 11 years ago

Does anyone know how to set the screen size on the talk talk player? american shows on the freeview are copped on my widescreen tv, with black borders either side..i.e. The Simpsons.

Recombu • 11 years ago

IIRC, The Simpson's didn't switch to widescreen until relatively late (I think around 2005 but maybe even later). For a show that's been running for more than 20 years, that means there are hundreds of episodes in 4:3, and if you're connected via HDMI, these will be shown in the correct aspect ratio with black bars either side. So there's nothing to worry about, you're most likely seeing it as it should be. You're possibly not used to it because TVs connected via Scart often stretch 4:3 images automatically.
The same is true of many other US TV series, which switched to widescreen later than Europe. The USA hung onto 4:3 well into the 2000s, and it was even possible to buy 4:3 high definition TV sets. The UK, and many other European countries, began a transition to widescreen in the 1990s both for TV production and consumer displays.

PS - You can spot particularly early 1990s episodes of The Simpsons by the quality of the animation and change to the colour palette, compared to modern episodes.

jones'y • 11 years ago

Thanks for your reply 'Recombu'.

I understand what you're saying regarding shows shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio, I used The Simpsons only as an example, older UK shows do the same. Previous to taking up Talk Talk's offer of a new recorder, I used to use a Freesat recorder. In the settings menu I could change the aspect ratio to overcome the problem if ever I needed to (although for 99% of the time, the recorder did this automatically). I can get past watching things on Freeview which are set in the 4:3 ratio, by reverting to watching it on my tv (if you get what I mean) but it is just the hassle of jumping between the tv and Talk Talk Player. My tv also shows old 4:3 episodes, but they do fill the screen, as did the Freesat recorder. I just wondered why Talk Talk Player does not?

The mention of a scart is a blast from the past, I haven't used one of them since my old vcr years ago : )
I also received a reply regarding my broadband speed today (by e-mail from a Talk Talk representative) which offered the explanation of watching or recording tv as a possible reason why my download speed had more than halved. I explained that I had the Talk Talk Player switched off whilst carrying out the speed tests, both with Talk Talk's own checker, and an independant one. My download speed has dropped from 8.5 - 9.5kbps to 4.12 - 4.35kbps and I don't see why my broadband should suffer, especially as I'm now paying extra for a tv package. I wondered if 'jimbob30' had received a feasible reply from Talk Talk?

Its a right let down . My 7 day catch up TV does not work it just fezzes. I just can't use that part of the BOX. I have to unplug the whole box from wall socket to get out of that screen . I emailed TalkTAlk about few days ago, still no reply . TalkTAlk won't be adding the app part of Lovefilm on the BOX only " Play View , Even thought TAlkTAlk have even numbers a year free suspicion.

jimbob30 • 11 years ago

got my youview box and must say its good love the layout but its a bit slow when you push the ok button to get the banner up about a 6 second delay but an update could fix that i suppose also talktalk need to add the recording feature for the sky channels and adding lovefilm instant would help as talktalk customers get a free year so it needs to be added to youview as my xbox is for gaming dont care about watching stuff on it i game or watch tv on youview but i feel talktalk are going in the right direction.the only major problem i had is the brite sparks engineer said he would optimise my broadband but he slowed my spped down and now talktalk keep making excuses to not speed it up again
