This doesn't remove from the claim of loud sound of the US jets taking off. I have been at our airport when they've taking off and the sound is so loud the dogs howl. It hurts your ears, but what we are hearing is a different sound.

Jo • 9 years ago

I am in Cobble Hill and we can hear this low frequency, vibratory hum nearly always. I can hear it in Gordon Head, James Bay and Sooke. It is far from solved.

Bella • 9 years ago

Just noticed post below about the cause of the sound....

Bella • 9 years ago

The 'rumble' was quite frequent and quite loud over the Canada Day Long,Long weekend in Victoria.(July 2014)...do we know what is causing it?

H • 10 years ago

I live in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast. Quite frequently I will hear this noise. Deep rumble, almost thought it was the start of an earthquake. Have heard it a few times late at night but today as I was walking along the beach, I heard it very distinctively. It probably lasted about 20 seconds or so. I read the post below about the CBC, makes sense although I'm a little surprised at how loud an aircraft can be.

I'm a young lad, and I've been kept up all night with this sound. I live in Sidney anyone else in Sidney hearing this? It's 4:40 am...

That Rumbling Noise

God Bless CBC Radio!Ever hear a mysterious, rumbling sound when you’re on the water near Ten Mile Point? CBC Radio in Victoria has tracked down the source.People from Oak Bay to Cordova Bay have been noticing a sound that has no obvious source. It’s an engine sound, low and rumbling, and it is HUGE. It shakes windows and vibrates the ground. Our paddle group has noticed it many times during the last two years, and lately we hear it every time we launch at Telegraph Bay. I’m half-deaf, especially in low frequency sounds, and this sound still makes a big impression on me. We’ve been wondering if it’s construction sounds, or a different engine on one of those big container ships. Very unsetlling when we’re on the water! The staff at the local station for CBC Radio tried to find the source of this sound that local people were hearing. Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt knew nothing, neither did the Airport at Pat Bay. Eventually, the CBC reporter got hold of Kim Martin at the US Naval Air Base on Whidbey Island, in Washington State.Until they reached her, Martin and the base had no idea we in Victoria were hearing that huge rumbling sound. But she knew what we were hearing. It’s a military aircraft taking off.The aircraft is the Growler, a big, So, what we’ve been hearing is the Growler taking off, from time to time for the last couple of years. There's more than one of these aircraft at the base. The reason we’ve been hearing it more frequently lately is because the US Naval Air Base on Whidbey is doing runway repairs to two of their four runways. There are only two runways in use these days. Depending on the wind direction, it’s a lot more likely these days that they’ll be using the runway that points the planes in the direction that carries the sound forty-five kilometres across the strait of Juan de Fuca right to us.adar-jamming plane.

I also can hear it very loudly by Arbutus Cove like a bomb just went off and it happens in 30 second to a minute intervals. Can someone please explain what this is? and why is this not in the newspapers?

weirdorwhat? • 10 years ago

Yep, really loud tonight from around 8pm onwards at ten mile point. Sounds like distant jet engine afterburners, maybe static testing....but if so why at night?

Curious as hell • 10 years ago

It's 8:10 on Wednesday November 6th and I've been hearing that rumbling intermittently all day. I'm very familiar with it as I've heard it clearly when playing golf at Uplands Golf Club - of course when I try to confirm it with my regular playing partners (who are all older) either they don't hear it or just say it's a jet taking off. But I grew up around airports with a father who worked for an airline - I know what commercial jets sound like when taking off or flying at low altitude. I heard it again later in the day (I rarely hear it more than once in any given day) and have heard it at least 3 more times in the past few hours this evening. I would love for someone to explain what that is. I am stumped.
Also, I live in View Royal, so nowhere near the East/Southeast shore where this is prevalent. Yet I can hear it clearly.

Today 11/6/13 hearing distant rumbling (little like thunder as slight vibration can be felt) in intervals (rumbling last around 10-15sec) I live at Uvic campus and the noise seems to be coming from the direction of willows bay. I checked the seismometers online and there's no seismic activity and it's definitely not an airplane. Also wondering what could cause this noise as big car etc couldn't be counted for it either. Also it seems to get louder gradually. (note; my roommate stated she has been hearing this noise many times at evenings while studying)

I wonder if this could be explained by the physics of acoustics, the Helmholz Resonator theory. If the Straight of Georgia, which has mountain ranges on both sides of it, and an air mass that is often laden with humidity, along it's entire length, creating a column of air, could be considered a variation on a Helmholz Resonator. If a plane takes off and produces a frequency in that air mass, it could be heard for a very long way at a very low frequency. Planes taking off from Vancouver, Victoria or possibly Seattle if the conditions are right, activate this corridor of air and it creates a deep rumbling sound that is much lower frequency than the sound of the plane itself. I live in Cordova Bay as well and would describe the sound I hear as a very low and deep drone with an irregular pulse. I would like to know where this sound is coming from. too.

Barbara McDaniel • 9 years ago

Hi, Angela - I just found this discussion; I've been hearing the exact same sound for the past two days: a very deep drone with irregular pulse & I cannot pinpoint its location. Seems like its coming from the sky from every direction. I've heard it before in the past, but it has been particularly intense in the past two days to the point of disrupting my sleep. Have you heard anything about this any more? Any clues what the noise might be? Greetings from Vermont! Barbara

angela neumann • 10 years ago

I hear it all the time. Tonight it is extremely loud and constant.

brightspark • 10 years ago

I live in Cordova Bay by the water and I have heard these noises as well on a number of occasions usually during the evening when it is quiet. At first I thought it was a distant earthquake (but no vibrations felt), then maybe distant thunder (but noise seemed too constant and steady for thunder), then I thought maybe it is noise coming across the water from an engine on one of the islands opposite or of a ship (none visible)..

Mdawg • 10 years ago

It seems to happen moreso when cloudy

Ken Moore • 10 years ago

Cloudy when I heard it too.

Terry • 10 years ago

I live in Cordova Bay and heard these sounds last night(Aug.13,2013) around 11:30pm. The rumbling would intensify for several seconds then fade and then build up a couple of minutes later. This continued for about 40 minutes. A very deep unnerving sound.

joann • 10 years ago

I also live in Cordova bay and regularily hear these noises. Deep rumbline that comes and goes. Hearing it again tonight. August 14th around 9:30

Mdawg • 10 years ago

I am hearing the rumbling as we speak. I live near there as well and the sound is definitely coming from towards the ocean. Military testing on San Juan Islands?

Sofia • 10 years ago

I hear them as well right now. They were also loud this morning, so much so that everyone in the house woke up! They are happening more frequently now. And louder too.

Ken Moore • 10 years ago

Obviously not our imagination. Too many people hear it and in the same area at the same time.

bw • 10 years ago

I have also heard this sons for the last few years. It would happen at night, day, clear or cloudy. I'm also in the broad mead area

We live in Cordova Bay, on the Ridge and can really hear the rumbling noise tonight: 9:30 pm and still going, April 29, 2014. We hear it often, usually around the same time. It is very unsettling!

Rick • 9 years ago

I'm on the ridge as well and it's rattling my house as we speak! What is this?

David • 9 years ago

10:33pm 29 April 2014. Hear it as well as I type. It's been bothering me this whole evening. Feels easterly.

Andrew • 9 years ago

Yeah we can hear it over our TV ion foul bay in oak bay

Rick • 9 years ago

There's no way this sound is coming from a jet in Washington... It almost feels like an earthquake.
