Whatever happened to freedom?

Kyle Bradelle • 11 years ago

You can grow ornamental cabbage but not a real one? Nice going, bunch of bureaucratic idiots.

PaulBraveheart • 11 years ago

The system wants you dependant. It hates people who are self relient. Once it get you hooked, it pulls the rug out from under you sort to speak. Just like with the UN agenda 21.

August G. Schwartz • 11 years ago

For over ten years Orlando has been championing xeriscape ideas that REDUCE lawn area. Lawns consume between 3 and 5 times the water that shrub and groundcovers do - so Xeriscape, low water consumption design, seemed the answer. Now they opt to champion lawns over plants that produce food. Idiotic.

A DeLane Harvey • 11 years ago

All this for a vegatable garden....So it looks like we will be needing a few tomaote police. Thats a few more jobs for the economy,

hookerpie • 11 years ago

Right, lets punish them for trying to feed themselves.

Diane Staggs • 11 years ago

To someone who lives in Orlando: find out if your city is U.N.Agenda 21 'compliant' and if it is, start a grassroots movement to 'root' it out!

orlandodown • 11 years ago

Why does Orlando want to be a socialist place like NYC with crazy rules, this is a small city(200,000) not 2 million, people moved here from big cities to have a little space and freedom. If you are growing veggies on your property, its your property not the city. If there was a bunch of old cars and toilets on the front yard that would be different. All you idiots that live under a home owners association communist rule need to move to those places and stay out of one of Orlandos few remaining good spots.

Stuck@home • 11 years ago

""We endorse gardens, we're invested in community gardens, we've done workshops on gardening, we're not against home gardens," Ippel said on behalf of the city."...
Riiiiiiiiiiiight.... YOU just cant have one on YOUR property.

Scarlet Angel • 11 years ago

No one said they can't have it in their back yard. They just want to create drama, and they did it.

Priscilla King • 11 years ago

Not that it's really about aesthetics. It's about property rights. They pay taxes on it, they have the right to plant what they like (although not necessarily to spray poison on it). Even if it's disgusting Bermuda grass. All I have a right to do about the Bermuda Grass Blight is tell the world that I'd rather look at anything, including poison ivy, than Bermuda grass.

Priscilla King • 11 years ago

Suburban front yards aren't the best place for vegetable gardens because the plants pick up pollutants from motor vehicles...but I'm in favor of any improvement on the Astroturf look, especially if it doesn't have to be doused with poisons to keep native plants from displacing grass as nature intended.

OscarTheMOBMouthpiece • 11 years ago

Patriot Garden. My Butt. If this clown can wait 3 months for a garden to produce, he isn't going hungry. Take his house. Better than having the fool infest the neighborhood with Mice, Rats, Palmetto Bugs and snakes, Flies, Ants and lice and Ticks. Enforce the City Ordinances, and force this Patriot to respect others Property Values.

Stuck@home • 11 years ago

What a fvkin asinine, uneducated thing to say.... hey bozo, go back to Brooklyn

OMiGosh! • 11 years ago

I agree. Let them move to Bithlo or a more rural .. People pay big bucks to live in places like College Park -- away from the rats and ticks and ants and bugs and snakes .. ... just curious .. are they growing collard greens ??

Kyrila Scully • 11 years ago

I think it's horrible that the City of Orlando is working to stop Jason and Jennifer Helvengston from growing a vegetable garden in their front yard! I think the city officials who are persecuting this family should be removed from office and stop bothering people who grow food in their yards. Vegetable gardens, if well kept, are beautiful and provide food and nourishment for the gardeners and their families. And it's always been a patriotic thing to do---Victory gardens were encouraged during WWII and even today our First Lady is encouraging families to grow vegetables. With Zero Property zoning, the front yard is the only place a lot of people have to grow gardens. Leave it alone--fix the laws to make it a right---for it is indeed our GOD GIVEN RIGHT to grow our own food.

Kyrila Scully • 11 years ago

Leave these people alone! What is wrong with you? I guess you don't want to be re-elected to office? Even Mrs. Obama is encouraging people to have vegetable gardens! It's a patriotic thing to do! Remember the Victory Gardens of WWII? If it was overgrown and not kept up, that would be one thing, but what could be prettier than a beautiful vegetable garden? They flower before they develop their fruit and it's a wonderful thing. Plus it provides healthy food and nourishment for the gardener and their family. Use some common sense, will you?

Liza Sauls • 11 years ago

In times when water is becoming a scare commodity in many areas, a garden is a much more efficient use of resources than grass! Get a clue Orlando...and many other cities insisting on "image" over healthy alternatives!

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

Just what does John the Sustainability Director do for his paycheck... and who created the job and title... is that part of Obbba's kick off of UN Agenda 21 that he named his Rural Sustainability Project or something like that, which is ticking off farmers all over the USA? Careful, it's getting wobbly.

imagooddriver • 11 years ago

It looks ridiculous. Plant them in the backyard! Fine those idiots $500/day. Then foreclose on them after they fail to pay.

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

Don't talk with your mouth full, and don't be so arrogant about your driving. Both could be a mistake.

Pat Shortal Wager • 11 years ago

Cmon city!! The garden looks alot better than 6 cars parked on the front lawn with kids toys all over the place,,,And to top it off -ive even soon a big barking dog out front, tied to his dog house with the front lawn all torn up!!Go get those people and leave the beautiful, abundant garden alone!!

gardeninggal1 • 11 years ago

According to another news site...the man who complained does not live in Orlando....he lives in Puerte Rico and rents the house out. He was only here checking on his property and has since left the country.

Ken Owens • 11 years ago

When I see words like "sustainability director" I know these cesspool dwelling bacteria are agenda 21 viruses. It's truly time to start taking the garbage out, complete with a high dose of lead poisoning.

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

Hadn't read your post before I submitted mine. Glad to see Americans allll over are rising up against Obbba's pushing the UN's Agenda 21 on us under the guise of the title he gave it to hide his collaboration. Something like Rural Sustainability Land or something. Anyway, he started working it last year in upstate New York and got his fingers caught in the cookie jar and the news spread across the USA so maybe that's how you caught on... anyway, checkout Olive New York. The commies always start nibbling before they chomp. To H*ll with the commies. Heck, with the Fast and Furious debacle and the run on the kids at the CT school, which will be an albatross and will not accomplish the ganging on our 2nd Amendment, these dopes are getting fingers caught in a lot of cookie jars... and the big cookie jar is that we Americans are not dumbed down enough yet for them to take us over, the tyrants.

Guest • 11 years ago

I am all for having a "victory garden" and being able to grow ones own food. However, they mentioned in this news story that the family could erect a fence. Honestly, this will bring down property values. I'm sure the neighbors are the ones who complained to the city. Usually the back yard is the preferred place for a garden. These people put more energy into their website and passing out free seeds and making agendas than it would take to place a nice white washed fence up. These people need to get a clue.

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

Yeah, usually Americans stop tyrants from trying to take their firearms. Are you clued in on that?

blantona1 • 11 years ago

Ok leaving all wingnut politics aside....what has happened to just good old common sense? I love that the "sustainability" director had this to say " the city in the process of updating its landscaping code, incorporating language that will address front yard gardens." How about this for language that addresses it....stay the hell out of my front yard! I understand the need to regulate trash in a residential neighborhood. Nobody wants cars, tires, trash, toilets, chemicals or building waste laying around in neighborhoods. However, plants are plants, as long as its a legal plant leave it alone. And what azzzhole had nothing better to do than complain about what type of plants were in someone else's yard anyway....jeez people get a life already.

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

hummm... no Useful Idiots growing in blantona 1's property. Thanks, buddy.

laynalanguage • 11 years ago

Lastly, City of Orlando, is this what you want for your nation???...do you want someone telling you, what to do in your own backyard?...you really need to think long and hard about what you are doing...this will not end well, if you choose the wrong road. I stand with the family and their right in their own yard, to plant what they want. Please leave them alone.
L.

Scarlet Angel • 11 years ago

You mean front yard.

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

laynalanguage you are not alone. AMAZING AMERICANS are standing to defend our country and freedom again. Lookin' reallllly good.

laynalanguage • 11 years ago

You know, we all want to be right here...and we all want to think that we are righteous in our indignation...but, when we call others 'morons and idiots' we are no better than the people we are deriding...in fact, Scripture tells us not to call anyone a 'fool'.
I think we can get our points across to one another without stooping to evil conduct.
If you think ur going to change America for the better, with that kind of verbage...forget it.
It starts in the heart...getting your heart right before God...and speaking to others as you would like to be spoken to.
America was founded on Christian principles and if we are going to see those who are against the Constitution and the Founder's principles which were based on the Scriptures, come over to the right side...then, we are going to have to set an example to those who say and do wrong, that this is not the way America becomes strong.
I fear it may be too late...many bad apples have spoiled the whole basket.
What I do see coming, is Judgment...the wrath of God on disobedience...He will deal with those in power, one by one...but, God does use evil to purge His people of their sins.
It's not CAPS, that are the problem, it's our backbiting that is devouring us.
See that it does not consume....
L. Vancouver.

The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion ~ John Adams

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

God gave us this land, gave us brilliant brave unselfish men to create a government that has never existed on this planet before. The Best. Many realize we have been nice and hopeful and let bad people populate and take control of us. No more. We were a few good people fighting a whole lot of bad apples in the 1700's and we made applesauce. We HAVE the recipe to do the same... in our User's Manual... the manual with chapters titled Declaration, Constitution, Amendments, Bill of Rights, Rule of Law, etc etc., all formulated and based on CHRISTIAN principles... principles that ALLOW others to worship in their own religion. Time to follow the letter of the law, pray for forgiveness for allowing such filth in our country, and clean up our messes.

laynalanguage • 11 years ago

This is for the guy that made the comment about people on WELFARE...can't find it now...since loggin in...
I voted you 'up' but, to be fair, don't pigeonhole every poor person on assistance, as a lust-filled, drunk or drug addict. It just aint so...there are many good Christian people on assistance or disability...who do not entertain such vices. That's like saying that every man who is 6'2" tall, is a jerk...it's just not the case...though some are...don't paint people with such a broad brush. I am sure that many people could say, that every Republican Conservative is greedy and selfish...neither is that true.

this is just ridiculous all this because someone choose to grow food over grass get real lawmakers this is what is wrong with this country right now - stupidity

Tim Slaughter • 11 years ago

If this sort of Government interference continues people will compare us to the United States.

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

Yuk yuk.

URKiddinMee • 11 years ago

One can't blame the city bureaucrats, I mean HELL, all those pink plastic flamingos throughout the neighborhood add such a classy look to the rest of the area. Who would want to see something useful and green when given the choice?

Edward Ramos • 11 years ago

I agree with Daniel, We are getting very close to taking action aganist this corrupt government on all levels. I would encourage law enforcement and lilitary personnel to consider what side they will chose when that decision needs to be made. Do not allow the assault rifle ban to take effect because when the people have had enough I want to be able to possess the same type of weapon that my oppressors have.

WhileWeAreHere • 11 years ago

There is a uniting surge of conversation across this country in agreement with what you say, and it is ASTOUNDING and BEAUTIFUL to see our Americans coming to the front and getting ready. It WON'T be beautiful, but it IS beautiful to see the alertness, the integrity, the dedication, the strength and courage abounding from our people. I have always been proud of our founding, our country, our people, and that pride is justified seeing how Americans are preparing to protect our Freedom, our Children, our Future. WE WILL NOT BE North America Union headed by appointee Obbba. Also, it is beautiful knowing how our Marines, Seals, SECRET SERVICE confirm in conversations they will fulfill their Oaths to protect AMERICANS and AMERICA... and have networked with all other military. We will have some big celebrations after this tyranny is ended. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

doesn't look like the arden is overly large or unsightly and its in the back of the house kind of hard to see any problem with it, sounds more like somebody got pissed and is making these people suffer.

Scarlet Angel • 11 years ago

It is in the front yard.

some people try to make this a right/left issue. It isn't. It's a
government gone wild with unconstitutional power. Both parties are
working for the Rothschilds, not us.
