Wow Jet went out like that! Hemo-Goblin really???

filbypott • 10 years ago

"New Guardians" tried so hard to be relevant to the social issues of the 1980s, but failed laughably. It's worth reading solely for how absurdly bad it is.

Never forget Monica Rambeau, she started as Captain Marvel, was a member of the Avengers, teamed up with Captain Marvel's son, called herself "Photon" for a minute, lead the group called NEXTWAVE (and if you've never read that one, get the trade - it ROCKS) and teamed up with Black Panther, Brother Voodoo and Luke Cage.

Anon Imus • 11 years ago

isnt she known though? these are superheroes no ones heard of lol

IceSaber • 10 years ago

I've heard of all of them, so not sure what the point here is. If they include Misty Knight, a very popular character from Iron Fist days, they sure should have included Capt Marvel (Photon).

Learn how capitalization works. VERY distracting.

IceSaber • 10 years ago

Amen.

You FORGOT the most important character of the AVENGERS Marvel Universe that you need to add!!! Monica Rambeau, aka Captain Marvel who became a leader of the Avengers. She later used the codenames Photon and Pulsar. PLEASE ADD HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm happy to say i've heard of quite a few! I hope to karate chop the industry with more of em. There's also Captain Marvel ;] she's pretty cool too.

Atomic Kommie Comics • 11 years ago

How about one even YOU never heard of...the FIRST Black superheroine...BUTTERFLY?
http://heroheroinehistory.b...

Clell65619 • 11 years ago

Why did you list these characters as 'never heard of'? The bulk of them were/are players in major team books and a good portion are still active (quite an achievement with the overall contraction of the industry).

- Oh, Misty Knight partners with *Iron* Fist, aka Danny Rand, not Black Fist whoever he may be.

Spokhette • 11 years ago

They most definitly are major players in story lines and groups if you are looking for them. You go grab any number of comic book "Nerds" or Readers and I bet you if they are not of color, they are NOT going to be able to name any of them. My friend Emily and I run a comic book blog, she's been reading them for as long as I have, and she can name 5 black superheroes, all together. We may know them, but its time for the rest of the world to know them too.

Atomic Kommie Comics • 10 years ago

How about the Black superheroine who appeared several years BEFORE Storm, drawn by Wonder Woman and Spider-Man artist Ross Andru...The ButterFly?

Great piece. Check out what's happening other side of the pond too- google 'burkha avenger', pakistani female superhero in a burkha! popular too, apparently.

Benny • 10 years ago

Yes yes yes I have read comics since I was able to read thank you I remember many of these but some are new to me.

culmant • 11 years ago

This is just a great list. It would be great to put all their stories into a trade paperback from each company. The bad side of this is that none of the wonderful characters are being used today.

Jezdamayel Caster • 11 years ago

oohh yes! i use to draw Voodoo a ton <3

Atomic Kommie Comics • 11 years ago

You can now read the complete unpublished 1st issue of DC Comics' Vixen from 1978...and learn why it was never published!

She's not technically a superheroine, but she's a Black woman who wears a ninja-like black outfit, is expert with a gun, kicks serious ass, and was the star of both a graphic novel series AND two-season live-action TV series...in France!

She's Lea Parker and you can learn about her at http://www.squidoo.com/lea_...

This is awesome! During black history month, we often focus on telling the same ten or twelve stories over and over again... and yet, we (we = people of color, women of color) have an impact that is so much wider than that. Thanks for creating and sharing this incredible list! :)

BrainyPirate • 11 years ago

Don't forget another Legionnaire (and Legion leader), Kid Quantum.

BrainyPirate • 11 years ago

And where's Rocket?

BrainyPirate • 11 years ago

The Legion also had Kid Quantum, a black woman who became Legion leader. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Aww man! Too bad I didn't know about Nubia growing up. I always had to fight with the only other girl in the neighborhood for the Wonder Woman title. From now on, call me Nubia!

Acacia • 11 years ago

What about Storm? Or does she not count? Curious.

Brainy Pirate • 11 years ago

Don't forget Kid Quantum, Dawnstar, Harmonia Li, Dr. Light, Renee Montoya, Cass Cain, Kendra Saunders, Yolanda Montez, Manitou Dawn....

RLMAO. I know two things from this. I read a hell of a lot of comics, and I'm just getting old. With one exception I not only know these characters - I own the bloody books they are featured in. (Been collecting since 1968 - literally.)

Love this post! Thanks for giving me some graphic novel ideas!

AWESOME! Gabriella, do you mind if I reference and link this post on The Black Girls Club?

Gah! You are right! Oh well, guess that's what I get for editing an article at 3:40 A.M. Thanks for letting me know.

Seaberry • 11 years ago

Good list. Just one correction: Misty Knight occasionally teams up with Iron Fist, not Black Fist. They dated for a long time, but remain good friends.
