Dear Jamie:
Thank you.

Jamie Lin • 12 years ago

Roy So • 12 years ago

Jamie Lin • 12 years ago
Aru Young • 12 years ago

Sad • 12 years ago

Hi Jamie,

I am from Hong Kong and i'm currently studying economics in my final year. I wish to seek advices on whether I should go for a computer science degree. I'm interested in coding and innovating new apps, and I did a part time job in a big-data startup firm. I definitely feel interested and comfortable in coding. In 2013, I hope I can roll out 2-3 products (mainly webapp) to test my skills and serve as some showcase.

But somehow I feel confused as if I am applying for a master in CS degree, I would be disadvantaged given that i do not have an engineering degree now. Is it also a good way to take some second-year programming course to proof my skills as well?

I like your blog so much! Cheers and wish you all the best in 2013!

Jamie Lin • 11 years ago

If you truly wanna learn programming, you can learn it anytime & anywhere. A programmer is judged by his/her work, not degree.

Dennis Du • 8 years ago

Mr. Lin, this is some horribe advice. I've read some of your other articles-- do you even know what you're talking about half the time?
People can certainly pick up programming skills at any point, but that wasn't the nature of this person's inquiry.
I would advise you and your colleagues to think twice about offering some shit advice without truly thinking about the consequences of your actions. You have a global audience-- don't think it's so easy to cheat the local Taiwanese market with your meaningless, overpriced classes and bad advice/guidance.
The Taiwanese tech startup culture will fail because of organizations like yours.

Jamie Lin • 7 years ago

I'm so sorry you didn't find my advices to be helpful. Though I try very hard to give them based on the best of my knowledge, I can certainly be wrong. After all, we don't know what we don't know. That's why they're called "advices" instead of "instructions". One is supposed to consider and make his/her own judgement after hearing people's advices.

As to "overpriced classes", I really don't know what you're referring to. Neither me nor AppWorks, my company, offer any classes for a fee. So pretty sure you are misguided with that comment, which goes to show us yet again, even a much smarter adviser like you can have times when you don't know what you're talking about.

Henry • 11 years ago

Hi Jamie,

I heard you comment about Taiwan needing to update its
regulations to be more online start up/entrepreneur friendly at an
Entrepreneur convention in Taipei once. I totally agree with you. In my
opinion, laws such as the mandatory 7 days return and price
error/mandatory order fulfillment are cultivating a crooked consumer
culture in Taiwan.

they all said that they know the law is unjust, but there is not much
that they can do if there are not enough voice against it.

I was
wondering do you think it would be enough to gather all the
entrepreneurs / online business operators and rally to have these laws
amended? Or start an entrepreneur association to help voice the needs
& concerns of startups instead of the useless SMEA (Small and Medium
Enterprise Administration)?

Jamie Lin • 11 years ago

We're working with many institutions to help solve this problem. If you want to help, you can write an email to 行政院長信箱 voicing your concerns and suggestions. That's the most effective way to express your opinion.

Jamie Lin • 7 years ago

7 years ago

Jamie Lin • 7 years ago

7 years ago

Jamie Lin • 8 years ago

David Chen • 8 years ago

Kaisen Yang • 8 years ago

Jamie
