Not a honey be but it's a relative

It appears our bees did not make it through the winter. πŸ˜ͺ. The combs are full with honey still so they were not starving. The winter wasnt too cold and the swarm was healthy and big in autumn. We will clean the hive now and will restart when our other colonies naturally start splitting over the next 12 weeks during dandelion flower. Unfortunately colonies collapsing isnt a rare sight anymore. Last year one of the beekeepers in our region reported 50% of his hives collapsed. It leaves us clueless and ashamed. We are thinking on changing the hive layout and adding humidity and temperature sensors inside to better monitor the hive.

I'm so sorry for your loss and understand it is happening to everyone. Looking forward to a better year

Thank you for reporting back to us. This is indeed sad news. Truly, we appreciate all you do to upkeep this hive and colony and with bee conservation. πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Sad news. Hopefully a new colony will thrive in due course. Bees are really having a hard time with the combination of climate change, lack of biodiversity in modern farming and pesticide use.

If you look or scroll back to just before the night/day view changes, you can just about make out what look like dead bees on the floor inside the entrance.
Is this just some of the bees? All of the bees?

@Philipp Angele any update on the hive?

Thank you for everything you do to make this possible for us to watch. Also, thank you for your stewardship to the upkeep and health of this hive and the bees that gather here. πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Have there been any sightings, on the warmer days, of any live bees?

It does look as if our hive has been abandoned πŸ˜•

I disagree : )
Today there's a bee on the lower right comb. A couple of days ago I saw a bee walk quickly up a comb edge, and also a bee on the landing board. I just think they're in a cluster, deep in the comb, and have no need to be active right now.

Thank you for your very optimistic comment. That is our hope for this hive! We did loose the colony last year. I shouldn't have been negative. My comment was probably me trying to prepare myself for a less successful outcome. I'm not usually pessimistic, I'll make sure I check myself. Thanks for reminding me to be more confident in the bees. πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸπŸ―

Here is an interesting article explaining honey bee habits over the winter months.

Is there any way that the people who look after the hive can give us a photo of the overall hive, from the outside?
I can't quite match up the log hive interior, with what looks like a regular, low-to-the-ground, square box with flat landing board and flat inside surface.
Are they really the same hive? How does the log fit with the square box?
Thanks!

PhilippAngele • 5 months ago

https://uploads.disquscdn.c... A few years ago, the log deteriorated. We constructed a small shelter for the bees, which is located in my parents' garden.
