WHAT THE FUCK!!!! that was nuts

Justin • 10 years ago

I hate seeing this be the way the fight ended. Would have rather seen Weidman win by KO or Sub not seeing my favorite fighter lose because of a freak injury. I wish Weidman the best in his title run but Silva will always be the G.O.A.T in my eyes.

PunchyMcface • 10 years ago

It wasn't a freak injury. Weidman checked Anderson's kick. It is a legit technique that lead to a stoppage. The same as a KO strike or submission that puts your opponent to sleep.

Justin • 10 years ago

But people check kicks all of the time and how often do they lead to a broken leg like that? It was freak because of the rarity of it and the power in which Anderson was throwing the kick.

gadgetfreaksta • 10 years ago

or the power that weidman's knee has

Justin • 10 years ago

Maybe so, they should check it for steroids.

gadgetfreaksta • 10 years ago

lol

highimmason • 10 years ago

Silva could kick MY knee. And it won't break my knee. It would break his leg first. I'm sorry, but the break was from either silva's sheer power or maybe something wrong with his legs. That was not from weidman's knee "power".

gadgetfreaksta • 10 years ago

here come the excuses

citizenrich • 10 years ago

Wow, just give up, fanboy.

highimmason • 10 years ago

I was rooting for Silva, but I'm not a "fanboy". Don't get me wrong, that was a well placed check and very good. But it was not weidman's "knee power" that resulted in the break.

Michael • 10 years ago

Thankyou.

Michael • 10 years ago

knee power. really...

PunchyMcface • 10 years ago

Your right it doesn't happen much in mma but Weidman checked
all the previous kicks that Silva threw this fight. Most fighters stop leading with leg kicks after having them checked more than once. Silva kept leading with them skinny ass legs and look what happened.

Maximus21 • 10 years ago

After their first fight, Weidman's trainer commented that he got kicked a lot...hence they worked on checking them. Good defensive strategy on his part. It's unfortunate that it resulted in Anderson's leg snapping in half though...

Yep, serious Bro crush!

sadowolf • 10 years ago

Fighters rarely check kicks as perfectly as that. When they do, it's not a surefire way to snap someone's leg, but it sure as hell hurts and can injure the kicker. Just so happens Weidman's was the perfect storm required to produce that effect. There's some luck involved in that, but you can't deny that Weidman checked that kick with the intention of hurting Anderson so that he would think twice before kicking again.

MrPeePee • 10 years ago

Anderson has always had very skinny legs because he fights at middleweight despite his frame. This is the risk of being that skinny; there isn't a lot of muscle on your legs to help dispel the energy of the blow.

Master Bader • 10 years ago

plus the fact that you could clearly see he kicked weidman on the bone area at a very fast speed....shoulda just gone for the thigh...it looked to me like silva's shin connect with weidman's shin....which is a VERY dangerous thing to do in ANY sport.

Jeff Schwager • 10 years ago

It's his anatomy and doesn't have much to do with him fighting at middleweight.. Blacks tend to carry more weight in their thighs and less below the knee. It's what helps them run fast but the tradeoff is less meat to cushion blows as you noted.

Another factor might be his age. The older you get the more brittle your bones get. Age 39 isn't that old, but at that level of competition and fitness, it could be the difference between a bone bending with the impact or breaking on a hit that hard.

Note that Weidman blocked with the part of his leg just below the knee where the bone is relatively thick. Silva caught Weidman's leg with the part of his leg just above the ankle where the bone is thinner.

So if you factor in genetics, age, and consider where the force of impact was distributed on his lower shin, you pretty well have a recipe for a broken leg.

Ryan Tomasetti • 10 years ago

The first part of your analysis was spot on. The second part, where you mentioned at 39 years old hes suffering from osteoperosis, go take a hike.

William Collett • 10 years ago

ur correct Justin It was a freak accident, to suggest that it is a legit technique that leads to a stoppage funny to me.

Ryan Tomasetti • 10 years ago

I tell you what, you throw a leg kick at me as hard as I can, and I'll check it, and we'll see if you can continue our fight

Buster Real • 10 years ago

They usually train to check kicks on their chin as they are pulling it away... Weidman said he trained to check kicks on his knee like that specifically because of the leg kicks he received in the first fight.

sadowolf • 10 years ago

The power of the kick didn't have an incredible amount to do with it, otherwise a lot of fighters would be hurting themselves more often. It's mostly about placement, and checking a kick properly is all about placing your knee and shin in the proper way to maximize damage to the kicker. It was a major thing Weidman worked on after the first fight, and this time it worked better than probably he ever thought it would. This isn't much different from KO'ing someone with a shot you were using to set up the real KO shot. He wanted it to use it to stop Silva from throwing kicks, and instead he just plain stopped Silva.

tremainh2 • 10 years ago

Yes, it is a freak injury. When you check a kick it is a block (just as you guard your face). It's not a technique to winning fight bud.

PunchyMcface • 10 years ago

I consider checks a counter to a kick. Both defense & offense. A pure defensive kick check would be the planting your leg technique that absorbs the kick through your flexed muscles.

slaytanicsteve • 10 years ago

punchymcface are you an idiot? Uh, yes you are

PunchyMcface • 10 years ago

I'm sorry that you don't know that kick checks are actually as offensive as they are defensive. The higher up your oppenent's leg hits your shin & the lower it hits their shin can make a check a very offensive weapon. Weidman was checking the other kicks this fight too. If you don't have any intelligent arguments than please don't try to insult mine.

BeardsleyMcTurbanhead • 10 years ago

I've been practicing muay thai for about 5 years and can honestly say that checking kicks has never been taught as anything but a defensive action. A freak leg break such as this can be down to poor technique, bad luck or a mixture of the two. I don't even want to get started on your comments about planting you foot/tensing your muscle being a standard 'defensive check'...

Ishkabibble Shabazz • 10 years ago

Checking a kick offensive?!?! Thats the dumbest thing ive heard all night. Thats like using your face to break his hand...

Master Bader • 10 years ago

shut up...it was a freak accident. point blank Don't come on here and suggest that weidman's checking of the kick somehow resulted in silva's broken leg as if weidman knew it'd happen.

Chuck Chuck • 10 years ago

It's a legit technique and a freak injury. How many kicks like that have been thrown and checked in MMA fights? Thousands. How many lead to a broken leg? It's a freak injury.

kira13 • 10 years ago

He will always be the GOAT. The Champ. No one will come close to what Silva has done in his stint as the champ. Sad to see him go down with that freaky accident/injury. Chris has still tons to prove, he won tonight via Injury, he deserve the credit, but he still got to win those tough fights for people to see him as a champ.

Ryan Tomasetti • 10 years ago

yeah dominating the champion for a total of 3 rounds in two fights with two stoppages, 3 takedowns, one brutal KO and one almost-TKO stoppage, Weidman really needs to prove himself against top competition. Maybe if there was a way we could set him up with one of the all-time greats or something.

Captain Courageous • 10 years ago

That's moronic. I've had involvement in fighting in various martial arts and styles since 1994 and if people even consider your opinion on this as partially legit that is giving you way too much credit.
We wouldn't teach a technique that even had a one-in-a-hundred chance of causing this sort of injury. We are all dumber for having considered your trolling rubbish as potentially true

aaron millar • 10 years ago

Maybe he has osteoporosis. He is old after all. Drink your milk kids. Heal up son...

jjk3174 • 10 years ago

Weidman beats Spider at any point of his career. Heck, Weidman only had 9 fights before Spider. Spider largely built his résumé' on Leites, Cote', Bonnar, Lutter. Props for beating Hendo & Belfort- legit. But way too many easy fights. Meanwhile, Bones dealt with Murderer's Row, GSP dealt with top guys, while Spider was fighting the Lutters. Not the GOAT. If prior fights count, then these do too.

Ryan Tomasetti • 10 years ago

Travis Lutter took him down, and when Anderson won that fight against Travis, he celebrrated the victory. End of story

Ishkabibble Shabazz • 10 years ago

Chael Sonnen took him down, and won 4 rounds and still lost!

Michael • 10 years ago

You're right at that

Vladimir_Poutine • 10 years ago

Lol that was GREAT. I could not be more satisfied after that ending.

Jacob K • 10 years ago

Then you have no idea about this sport at all go watch jackass

Guest • 10 years ago
Jacob K • 10 years ago

Yeah he has done nothing for the sport and deserves no respect. You're right.

Ryan A Jones • 10 years ago

The best ending ever! Seeing Anderson in so much pain was way too satisfying. I hate that guy.

Justin • 10 years ago

I pray that you break your leg tonight. I pray that you are unable to continue your career because of it. I hate you. Jerk.

Ian david Jensen • 10 years ago

People like you shouldn't be allowed to comment here, end of story.

Muayjitsu • 10 years ago

Yeah dude, what's up with the weird statement?
