That should be Book 2, coming out in 2017 after another lost or "stolen" election!!

mkenyasasa • 10 years ago

THIS "CRITIQUE" is much abt what wasnt said to this writer's satisfaction that the factual analysis of what the book is abt. this article does not in any sense make one who hasnt read the book want to read it as he makes a case of a non-indepth autobiography. my two cents: a worthless article. no critique but bias in and all.

Roy • 10 years ago

A very good critique, Nyairo has helped us (the young generation) by shedding more light on the chronology of events that are cited in the autobiography.

pro • 10 years ago

The writer of this story is pointing out negatives only showing that he has something aginst Raila

abzee • 10 years ago

nothing negative but that's the truth. Am not amazed by all the writer told us.

Rhope • 10 years ago

Ala! Now I want to read this book...

Boaz WARUKU • 10 years ago

Rush and buy while the stock lasts. Remember 'Enigma' is out of stock

Rembo Odero • 10 years ago

:(...The daily nation site is one of the few places you can come and have sober minded, intellectually spot on discussions.I will never understand why the subject that is Raila evokes so much emotion.on both 'sides' so to speak. But dnt turn a critical book review into the usual kikuyu-luo rubbish.Enough already. My gosh. You'd think there are no other tribes in Kenya. Its funny how you dnt see you are exactly the same.Pointing fingers, grouping, supremacy battles.Enough man.Hatutashinda hapa.

Indigo Blu • 10 years ago

A book is usually critiqued for its content and style, structure, and examined in its propositions and successful/or lack of success in attaining its arguments, rather than ridiculed for its absences. Unless this is not a critique but a personal opinion piece? In which case can that be made clear for purposes of intellectual honesty please? From this article it is impossible to even know what the book is about.

Enn Chochumba • 10 years ago

Great critique.... do I need to read the book after this? probably no.

Williams • 10 years ago

"So what makes one a land-grabber? Is it the extent of the acreage, the manner of purchase, location outside your “ancestral” home, the source of the funding, the time of purchase (pre-versus post-independence) or a varied mixture of all these factors?"

Very interesting question.

KenyaTosha • 10 years ago

It is always saddening to read this comments section. Where is all the hate coming from? It is very insensitive to say all Luos voted for person A and all Kikuyus voted for person B. To deny that Raila has shaped the opposition and had a huge influence on
the democratic process in this country is at best biased. Critique the book, not the person. Leader worship and sycophancy is seen equally on both sides of the political divide. People are
talking about God ordained presidency. May I remind you. Democracy does
not stop at election day. Democracy was never winner-takes-it-all process which has been the norm in Kenya. It is a long process of checks and balances where favoritism, corruption and impunity has no room. I can only pray for Kenya when I hear such
inflammatory speech.

Akwaba • 10 years ago

Good analysis but kindly write your own and include all that you have mentioned U appear to be a better writer. And by the way when writing who says that you have to include everything? You only write what you think is important! but you appear to know Raila more than he knows himself how come?

benedict nzioki • 10 years ago

Well done Nyairo, though your objectivity is in question since you have only highlighted the faults of the book without matching it up with the pros of his encounters.

Rhope • 10 years ago

the author made it clear that she is pointing out what was left unsaid in the book. ...

Guest • 10 years ago

It is quite conceivable that this book, hurriedly written is yet another attempt by Raila to rebrand himself. Therein lies the doing of Odinga dynasty - lack of patience and wrong approach to sussession politics in kenya. If the senior Odinga had patience he would have risen to the top. The same can be said of Raila. The book may be a good read but if it is meant to reinvigorate his political career he will once again fail unless he seriously reassesses his methods. My unsolicited two cents.

Everyone have a history, and i now believe we cant run away from our history. Lol there people who know our history than we do!Take care of your history; am working on mine.

Kenyans could not have known all these without Dr. Nyairo kudos Dr.

beatrice baraza • 10 years ago

One thing i like about Kenyans is we like arguing without thinkig, using compareason wea its nt needed, & always complaing. No one has force anyone 2 buy da book, read the artical? Jst 2save ur tyme, & ur thoughts by uself assume the book doesn't excist. I jst wish 1day we will wake up & c how blessed we r compared 2 other african countries. Lets c thinks da way they r not the way we r.

Can you stop writing so badly? It takes forever to understand your sms, whatsapp and chat like messages!

Banjamin • 10 years ago

I abhor this kind of English. If this is what new media can bring, then we have a big problem.

Williams • 10 years ago

?????

Chris • 10 years ago

The generation of SMSs, whatsApp and online chats. Soon English and any language with grammatical rules and semantics will be rendered obsolete.

Thankless • 10 years ago

Only in Kenya can a man who has been exposed as a traitor to his own country and has admitted the fact can still run for presidency not one not twice, maintain a huge following of die hard, violent sycophants and justify it by writing a book about his 'heroic deeds'

Indigo Blu • 10 years ago

Where were you when the country was afraid, and lost, and did not dare to dream of a new constitution? Where were you when press freedom was an illusion? Where were you when a Kenyan man who has dared to live and die for this country was in detention over the very same rights and privileges we hold so dear today? It is so easy to criticise things from the comfort of other people's achievements, isn't it? To negate their gifts so that one can feel better about one's special mediocrity. Do not take away from the gift of courage that this man has given Kenya.

Chris • 10 years ago

In Raila's defence, i too would blow my own horn and pat myself on the back if I was to write my life story. I wouldn't tell you the things I have done in the "dark". Why would I write a story that would give my detractors ammunition against my ambition to be president.

Linda Kimani • 10 years ago

"Raila does not recount the sad public plea Jaramogi made to Moi in Bondoshortly before his death when he asked Moi to leave him the president’s seat for just one day"
Woiyee! That's what is called desperation and I see history repeating itself in future.

Slay Tribalism • 10 years ago

I pity the likes of you whose posts are permanently full of hatred and bitterness that is grounded only on one thing: ethnic identity. Your likes cause more damage to society by breeding the social evil of tribalism that explodes when manipulated by like-minded politicians. Perhaps you will later grow and realize that the most important thing in the world is justice for all and peace, which only come if outgrow chauvinism.

naribiro • 10 years ago

I was looking forward to buying the book but I have changed my mind,Thanks to Dr Nyairo for saving me some coins, I could have swallowed alot of nonsense in this book, I will be looking for a non foreign owned NGO to donate this coins, its better than giving in to propaganda like literature.

nursesrock • 10 years ago

Why blow a trumpet about giving, save us your pride plse. Buying Railas book is not mandatory but a choice.

aoriri • 10 years ago

Dr. Nyairo lacks intellectual honesty in her almost totally hate filled portrayal of Odinga family especially Raila as 'no good', dishonest and may be harmful to Kenya's "peaceful state". This lady reminds me of so called personalities whose cheap fame are built by creating stories to build their fame by starting their careers with wild and shocking allegations half truths, stretched truths and lies about leaders or celebrities to gain viewers or readers ...we have many in the USA with huge TV or book contracts to entertain their supporters, tearing down their opponents with lies and half truths with no shame. The sad thing about Dr.Nyairo is that she is a very smart woman therefore seeing her throw this hate-filled hail Mary ball on Raila is shameful and truly sad!!!!!....What happened to the idea of balancing and verifying facts?. An article like this belong to the gossip column unless there are facts to back up some of your allegations. Did Raila publish his book before Dr. Nyairo did her's on Raila?

Rhope • 10 years ago

I think the simple question is: Is what she has written true or false?

Williams • 10 years ago

I was hoping to see you actually criticize Dr. Nyairo constructively and not just emotional bursts.
Which line of her criticism do you actually disagree with?
I read and i can proudly disagree with her on attacking Jaramogi whose soul is at rest.

Thankless • 10 years ago

Refusing to see the truth doesn't mean it isn't there. This is what is called burying your head in the sand. You have just been presented with facts but you still deny they exist, keep hiding!

Linda Kimani • 10 years ago

Your pain is understandable, the truth always hurts us the most.

Muasulai • 10 years ago

aoriri, the article is about what RAO didn't say. So from the beginning, it was about looking at the other side.

TruelyIsay • 10 years ago

At least you have given me many reasons why I shouldn't dare buy or even imagine reading the book. It's a farce and meant to fill the library shelves.

patrick • 10 years ago

sorry i love Raila

Williams • 10 years ago

hahahahahaha! i like this!

Okuyu • 10 years ago

Its your right to love anyone or anything. Remember, love is not only blind, it is deaf as well

reg • 10 years ago

I have been wondering all through about this perfectionist. haven't hard a single line he admits he actually did wrong/ apologizes In any given situation

Mwakideo Ngao • 10 years ago

Just another ethnically biased and tribally inclined writer. Dont attemt to rewrite history. All the govts of Kenya since independence have been corrupt and murderous

Linda Kimani • 10 years ago

The truth is painful but nonetheless true. accept-move-on

Mwakideo Ngao • 10 years ago

Joyce WAMBUI so how did the govt help him run his businesses by detaining him for 9 years - longest political detainee in kenya; putting his father under perpetual house arrest; killing and/or deporting his business partners; sacking and terrorising his wife; limiting his family's right of association etc? Kenya can only be free if the corrupt establishment that has been ruling this country for 50 years is DONE AWAY WITH! Lazy, hired pen relying on propaganda and warped intel briefs.

Linda Kimani • 10 years ago

Attempts at making this a tribal issue and inciting tribal hate doesn't change facts. And speaking of hired pens, didnt Raila hire an experienced biographer to write this book.

nursesrock • 10 years ago

One wonders why your comments bear lot of bitterness and hate.

Mwakideo Ngao • 10 years ago

Joyce WAMBUI Nyairo.
Surely when will these people stop their hatred and obsession with Raila?

som kevin • 10 years ago

Nya-iiro, yes. this, in my ethnic language means the ''daughter of smoke'' so are his/her comments, all shrouded in smoke. My dear, run for your cheque ,its already signed by your master, you did as instructed!

Linda Kimani • 10 years ago

what do you mean his/her comments?? you didnt know Joyce is a womans name?? First sycophancy then idiocy.

Itikwaki • 10 years ago

Not always Linda, Remember James Joyce? Check him on Wiki.
