"They say the project would create 200 jobs and generate $150 million in annual revenue, including $68 million to boost state education funding and $20 million for Nassau."

The politicians are foaming at the mouth , new patronage jobs to dispense, all that money to skim, it is sad that they even can offer this as a possibility, everyone knows the government cannot run anything, why are the OTB's always filing for bankruptcies?

undefined • 9 years ago

They claim it would create some 200 jobs but they do not state what type of jobs. Will they be high paying temporary construction jobs followed by low paying more permanent service sector jobs. The amount of money to be generated is based on what, a hope and pray and a good public relations team.

undefined • 9 years ago

Newsday ends each article with the same "OTB" says it will generate 20 Million....." NEVER mentioned is the fact that OTB is now over 51 MILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT. The only reason they are fighting so hard is the VLTs are necessary for OTBs viability. GET RID of OTB- it only exists for political patronage.

dpmac1 • 9 years ago

This will never happen. Put slots in stationary stores. The state will make the same money

RickR054 • 9 years ago

Take a look at the earnings of Casino Companies. They are lower and have been trending lower for a while. Flooding the market with more casinos makes no sense. The location makes no sense. It is a heavily used shopping area. The fact is NY State is 35 years late getting into the casino gambling arena.

sgaines • 9 years ago

A casino. Just another way to separate the ignorant from money they can't afford to lose.

Also another opportunity for OTB to screw up big time and waste even more money. Oh sure, they SAY it'll be for education, just like LOTTO was for education. And we've seen how well that worked out.

HermanZGerman • 9 years ago

The reason there is no TRO is because gambling was always illegal. NYS made it legal and now the powers that be want to say you needed to have a regulation against casinos. It is the same logic they use at the Federal and State level for gay marriage. When the people try to be proactive and define marriage in the traditional sense the Feds strike it down and tell the States that since they don't have a law prohibiting it they must permit it. This is tyranny disguised as law. Maybe garden city didn't go Coumo's way. If I recall Obama cancelled a fundraiser there which for him is unheard of so I wonder if this isn't some type of political payback. Fortunoff was the elite ladies and professional women's consumerist Mecca in the day. Liberals attacking Americana again.

Blues harp • 9 years ago

never seen more whiners than those on Long island.... is there ANYTHING THEY WONT COMPLAIN ABOUT?

York Hunt • 9 years ago

Until Gonsalves allows the OTB legislation to come to vote, she has no right to claim she opposes the casino

jsoria2 • 9 years ago

Woo Hooooo bring on the casino i can't wait.

full disclosure... I don't gamble at all except the occasional lottery, so I really don't care but I want it to annoy every NIMBY commentor here!

undefined • 9 years ago

Put it in your backyard. People leaving the casino at 3 am Certainly don't have jobs to rush off to in the morning. Leave your door open so it makes it easier to break in. Oh- and don't forget to leave your kid unattended at the bus stop because I'm sure those upstanding gamers will be just happy to leak around the 5 & 6 year old at the bus stop only 1000 feet away!

jsoria2 • 9 years ago

Foolish Foolish person. Maybe it IS my backyard you don't know where I live, oh,& you think the homeless will be the patrons? you're a FOOL and WHAT 5-6 yr olds are at a bus stop alone You should lock yourself in your shelter because you're afraid of the world sad sad person

Nothing for nothing the last thing any part of Hempstead needs is a casino. Its already full of dirtbags and why make targets out of hard working citizens just out for some fun by setting up in Hempstead.

kwts • 9 years ago

Hempstead Township.
Not Village.
Re-read the article then buy a map.

Paut the parlor in Oheka Castle... what a venue... Ready to deal Gary Melius!

mr127 • 9 years ago

Build the casino!!!!!

pf222 • 9 years ago

Local Proposition 1: Should there be a casino in Nassau County? Yes/No
State Proposition 1: Should state constitution be amended to ensure local representaion in the OTB state agency?
If NYS had an Initiative and Referendum law (see S709-2011 NYSenate) then voters could force this issue onto the next ballot in the next general election.

fac891 • 9 years ago

Don't need prop #1. An OTB run video slots parlor in Nassau County is already authorized by state law.

Prop #2 is irrelevant.

losmets • 9 years ago

how dare they put a place of business in a commercial zone! not NOW not EVER, NOT IN MY BACKYARD! put a fence up around it and let it rot, leave it vacant, keep the taxes low too, and NO NO NO to whatever proposal comes next NIMBY NIMBY NIMBY

"TRO" this Judge Off The Bench!

KBickom • 9 years ago

Mangano and Murray want it! Its all a big act!

mikehawx1 • 9 years ago

Actually the voters want it otherwise they wouldn't have approved the casino referendum

KBickom • 9 years ago

yup

Captnhook • 9 years ago

Actually the voters referendum was about casinos upstate & in New York City NOT about Nassau & Suffolk OTB VLT slot boxes.

EddieGiacomin • 9 years ago

Nassau and Suffolk were in the fine print. Nassau and Suffolk were intentionally delayed to give the upstate casinos a head start. Suffolk OTB will continue in bankruptcy without it so the political hacks who depend on Suffolk OTB are nervous about outcomes in Nassau.

WE THE PEOPLE be damned. Government will have THEIR way! Time for all these thieves to get tossed out of office! Start throwing them on a pile with Sheldon and Dean!

undefined • 9 years ago

Pretty pathetic OTB trolls newsday. A testament to their desperation. Horse racing industry is going the way of the oil lamp industry. Even if this thing opens it'll be closed in 5 years. Government can't run anything in the black, not even your tax dollars. Jobs jobs jobs. Lol.

Vinny • 9 years ago

Yes 5 hours and three judges later finally a judge made a determination. The first two democratic judges were asked to recuse or recused themselves from the case since they had dealing with Walsh and OTB. The third and one who did decline the TRO started by saying does anyone have a problem with him trying the case since he has dealing with Mr Cairo and an attorney.

iamamother • 9 years ago

Amazing that once again the government knows what is best for the people, no matter what the people think.

Pbonapace • 9 years ago

Yeah, I agree. Whether residents are pro/con about this and pay taxes up the wahzoo, no one listens.

Celticpogue • 9 years ago

LongIslander612 • 9 years ago

Just another way to steal money from taxpayers instead of elected officials doing their jobs and controlling spending.

dmanor • 9 years ago

it's not so much stealing as that it will bring out the dredges of society, kind of like that website - "people of Walmart".

Agree though that if it weren't for corrupt and TOO much gov't, they wouldn't need to keep looking for new source of revenue like a fix to a crack addict.

Fortunofftrackbetting coming soon!

FredZiffel • 9 years ago

yes! it's coming. Nothing will stop it.

Chimichanga • 9 years ago

Whaaat?? How dare this judge defy the Concerned Citizens of Nassau. Doesn't he understand that NIMBYs need to get their way on all issues, all of the time? Doesn't this judge know that NIMBYs are more important than everyone else? Listen up Judge: You better give in to these NIMBYs' list of demands... or else.

losmets • 9 years ago

I hope they CLOSE old country rd and every road in a 5 ... no 10 mile radius, but dont you dare raise taxes OR ELSE

AuntieKay • 9 years ago

Judge Palmieri did not issue a TRO to block the sale of the property, however he did issue a TRO blocking OTB from development pending further order of the court. In other words, they can buy the building but they can't do anything with it. Another court date is scheduled for February. It's an uphill battle, but the war isn't lost yet.

jimbojones • 9 years ago

So leave it empty and lose out on the tax revenue. Just another case of rich long islanders and not in my backyard

babywayne • 9 years ago

The casino is a done deal. Don't you folks get it? No one cares what you think - even Saint Andrew.

misterspeed • 9 years ago

Cool! I love it when the NIMBYers don't get their way!

AuntieKay • 9 years ago

They still might. What Newsday is not telling you is that while Judge Palmieri did not issue a TRO to block the sale of the property, however he did issue a TRO blocking OTB from development pending further order of the court. In other words, they can buy the building but they can't do anything with it. Another court date is scheduled for February
