"This Metroid tribute does more than suck off its source material."
I think the term you want is "leach". To "suck off" something means something radically different.
I meant what I said ;)
I didn't expect that. Not bad.
You heard it from Jonathan Holmes
Since we are nitpicking, I wouldn't describe something as a tribute if it is a new commercial game^^
Its more something like a very influenced title
I didn't mean to nit-pick, it was just a mildly-drunken moment of "to suck off, eh? Haha, oh god, NO WAY Jonathan meant that, oh god, haha". It was a moment of unawareness of American slang.
Also, I think I can roll with the idea of a new game being a tribute to a much older game. I think where it gets into being just simply very influenced is when they don't go the full mile. Where there is a mechanic, a world setting or something similar that differs yet doesn't add to the original source. Like Shovel Knight is more of a highly influenced title than a tribute to Megaman, as it is based in a fantasy setting that doesn't add to the original Megaman universe at all.
Which, I believe, it is fine to not be a tribute but rather a heavily influenced title. After all, I have my reasons to not be into Megaman, but I think I could get very into Shovel Knight.
Hate me all you want, but I really liked Other M. It was basically Fusion 3D.
"... suck off its source material" HMMMM
I'm getting some of that later.
Damn right you gotta do more than just suck off your inspiration. You gotta cup the balls too.
Amazing, it's like NES metroid but on steroids
Ooh ooh, it's a MESTEROID!...troid
So, MUCH better than AC:U and Destiny?
Well, the person who reviewed this game is not the same person as the one who reviewed ACU and Destiny, so you should judge this review/game on its own merits, instead of comparing it to two games in completely different genres.
Ok how about this: So, a MUCH better purchase than AC:U and Destiny?
Answer: YES.
And it's not even in 3D!
Those games sucked, so it's not a hard bar to hurdle over.
To Holmes? Yes, anything is better then ACU and Destiny to Holmes.
Having played and beaten the game in just a smidgen over 2 hours, I have to say it is a quality product. The negatives are really what is touched on in this review: boss type and length.
Overall I'd rather have a solid 2 hours than 38 hours of filler content for my $10. Would recommend.
As great as this game might be gameplay-wise..naaah..the visuals make me almost vomit.
Can't wait for Axiom Verge.
Axiom Verge appears to use 16-bit/32-bit graphics as well. Do you prefer Axiom Verge cause it's darker?
Hoffman prefers it because it's coming to Playstation. ^_^
Merry Christmas, Hoff!
Merry christmas, and actually since I know its coming to steam as well, I might wait for that version. I prefer pc to console releases if possible.
Yes, but also the whole setting and theme of AV appeals more to me visual wise, including the character designs and last but not least the music too. And I think Xeodrifter looks more like an 8bit platformer than a 16 or even 32 bit one.
This could not have been done on an 8-bit console.
Of course not. But the graphic style and pixels look more like 8 bit. Compare those with snes games like Contra 3, Super Metroid or Castlevania IV
The only thing that looks 8-bit to me is the height of the main character. All the visuals look very metroid: zero mission to me. Some SUper Metroid mixed in too.
I like both a lot. Hoping for a crossover.
an X-over!
Did not even know this was out, and it came out on my birthday of all days. I need to make more time for video games.
I don't recall creating this game. Musta been one helluva time lapse. I don't even drink.
want
Bought it on recommendation for my bro who loves super metroid-- cheers!
Holy shit seeing this review now, 9 out of 10? Does Holmes eat paint chips or something? I really wanted to like this game but it's truly abysmal. There's some things that could have worked but overall, this is a 4/10, being generous.
I bought this game for something to do between Majora's Mask. Now I'm craving a Metroid 3DS.
Between Starfox, Zelda Link Between Worlds (which I seemed to like more than most reviewers) and Majora's Mask, Xeodrifter adds even more to the value of a 3DS. It's the best portable console I've owned since the Gameboy Advance (consider the Metroid/Castlevania/Zelda titles it had)
PHRASING
I love games like this, but I've been hearing "meh" to "good" to "awesome" about it. To everyone else who have played it: is it any good?
Awww little chibi Moltar wants to get off those plantets to make it on time for Space Ghost.

I would love Renegade Kid to expand on this game. At first, I was kind of disappointed to run in to the same boss every time, but the addition of extra attacks and health kept it pretty fresh.
I think the length of the game was perfect for what it is, and I think this game would be really great for speed runners.
*sigh* One more eShop card, please.
Well, shit. I just bought this game solely because I read this article.
The power-up that lets you swap between the foreground and background was the most interesting part of the game for me. That made for some pretty neat level design!
I was a little disappointed that there was only one boss in the game. Even though the battle evolved each time you faced it, I was expecting a little more on that front. Some the Metroid series's greatest moments are its intense, unexpected boss battles.
The main character is basically the midget astronaut from Dropzone for the NES. Looks really cool, might check it out though I'm still anxiously awaiting Axiom Verge
