This is a Big 'ole fat advertisement. Great examples but very salesy nonetheless.

Kim Reynolds • 9 years ago

Thank you for your comment regarding the examples, Janet. I used examples from my most current, up-to-date project--which happens to be Social Media Marketing World. :)

Michael A. Stelzner • 9 years ago

Hey Janet - You can't blame us for doing some good ole content marketing on our own platform. If you have an event we hope you find ideas here.

Debbie • 9 years ago

As and event promotion specialist, I loved it. This was just the kind of information I was curious about. Thank you!

Thank you very much, Debbie. :)

Yes I agree, I thought the examples were very helpful and related to the content. Thanks for all the ideas, promoting an event for a client starting tomorrow, so this is very timely!

Kim Reynolds • 9 years ago

Thank you, Camille. Good luck tomorrow! I'm sure you will blow them away!

Janet Kennedy • 9 years ago

No blame, Mike. You have a right to toot your own horn on your own page. Your site content is free and this post is an excellent primer on social for an event (Well done, Kimberly!) If you had run this a month or two after the event and had results/feedback to include it would have been even more valuable. That said - it seemed like yesterday was my day to "poke the bear." I hold you and your team in the highest regard and your site is the first thing I recommend to my clients. Have a great event! I wish I could be there but I'll be following the Tweets!.

Thanks Janet :)

I wonder if titling this as a "Behind the scenes look at..." or "Pulling back the curtain on..." (how we're promoting our own event) would have been more intriguing to this audience anyway. Just a thought (or a "B test," maybe?).

WOW - who knew there were this many diverse ways to promote an Event! WOW!

Thank you, Kimberly!

Your best article yet. Thank you.

Wow! Thank you. :)

Great job getting all the details in one place for socially supporting an event, Kimberly! I especially appreciate how you pointed out the option of excluding FB ads for people who's email addresses are already registered for the event.

Kim Reynolds • 9 years ago

Thanks Kristin! Facebook ad targeting is getting so much more robust. I expect that Twitter will follow suit...and marketers will be able to reap the benefits on that platform as well.

Nice article Kimberley, lots of tips that I could apply to my own business. However I have the feeling this is aimed at large companies organising big events. If you were to choose only one or two tips for a small business (e.g.: a gallery opening), which ones do you think are more effective?

Kim Reynolds • 9 years ago

Hi, Alex. You are correct, many of them are aimed at larger events because that is typically the type of event I work with. For smaller events, like a gallery opening, you could modify any of the ideas. For example, Facebook ads. Target prior site visitors, people on your mailing list or prior event attendees. You can also target competitor's fans on their Facebook page. In fact, 5,7,10, 11 and 15 could all be easily scaled down to meet your needs. I think the overall takeaway is to integrate your event marketing into every aspect of your online presence.

Jennifer Ballard • 9 years ago

Thanks Kim! The words provide options (lots of them!) that anyone can try for any event. The pictures provide a visual case study, showing how they can all work together. Great job!

Kim Reynolds • 9 years ago

Thank you, Jen. Lots of options for a variety of different events. :)

#12 seems like a good idea - if can be automated - but after a bit of poking around I don't see how to make this happen. Any chance you could point me to a page where the details of this are made clear? Thank you.

Kim Reynolds • 9 years ago

At this point, I don't see a way to automate it. It is very time consuming and not terribly practical for a large or rapidly growing Instagram account. If IFTTT comes out with a new follower trigger for Instagram, I can maybe see a new recipe working.

Thanking you !!!
Right now lots of ideas are easy but implementation is hard.... :(

Kim Reynolds • 9 years ago

Yes, very true...especially implementing well! Best wishes. :)

Finding your event niche is also very important to be successful as an event planner. Also marketing of events plays a very important role. For marketing, I want to add a new way to promote your events. Find thousands of events and promote across the world. The website is bookmyentry dot com

SME just keeps on surprising me, in a good way of course. One of many great articles, really loving the tips, especially number 12!

coolinsights • 8 years ago

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. Lots of very practical and useful ideas that I can immediately put into practice, especially for events marketing here in Asia. :)

Christy Morgan • 8 years ago

This is so incredibly helpful and I got many ideas I can implement with ease. The days are over that you can just use Facebook for promoting your new business or event since most your fan base never sees your postings unless you pay. It's infuriating!

Thank you for the mention, Daniel! We don't mind if you share our content. However, we do ask that when you link to an article from our site, please refer and link to us by name. So for example, we ask that the line read as follows with the words "Social Media Examiner" linking to the article:

"Want more? Fair enough. Here’s another thorough article from Social Media Examiner on using social media to promote your event."
