Interesting thought experiment of a possible scenario. Will Taiwan be the next Sudetenland? In the face of an expanding China military will Japan be given free reign towards militarization? It isn't like they don't have the technology nor tradition. They currently are only spending 1% of GDP compared to the 3.5% for US, 2.8% for S. Korea or 2% by China.

We speculate because it is a possibility. The worst result in a conflict comes when you are not prepared. Fires are pretty uncommon all things considered, but you wouldn't like to just ignore the possibility. It also comes from the idea that you face a threat while it is emerging and not after its out of control. Sudetenland remember?

My take, a trade war is much more likely, but even that is unlikely since I don't see a motive. Sure there is capability, but just like in a crime drama, where is the motive? Given that China is even more capitalistic than the US is now, where would be the gain to cover the cost? To me its a high stakes poker match for the possible annexation of Taiwan (or negotiated annex like Hong Kong), and gaining undersea resources in the waters China claims.

The question is, is it avoidable? The US has obligations with its allies in the region. That is why it has allies. But the allies include Japan, South Korea and Philippines. India has a vested interest in Vietnam. The volitility is caused by china. At first they were indulging in Civil War instead of exercising effective controls when the US agreed to transfer the control of these islands to China after Japan's surrender.

Then after CCP seized the power, Mao Zedong was willing to sacrifice hundred thousands of solider to save Kim Il sung' s regime, but would not spare any resource to control these islands. His successor Deng Xiaoping would wage a war to take control Vietnam's barren mountains, but had no interest in occupying the islands. Only when there were oil and gas discovered in this area, China showed its enthusiasm and claimed sovereignty accordingly.

After China became the signatory of UNCLOS, it is more difficult and impractical for China to claim sovereignty in South China Sea on the basis of 9 dash line as it acknowledges the breadth of its territorial sea up to a limit not exceeding 12 nautical miles,(i.e. China shall waive the rights to claim for sovereignty over those areas exceeding 12 nautical miles) unless China can prove and other countries agree it is the Archipelagic State under UNCLOS.
