Can confirm there is an overture, and the artwork that accompanies it is grand and glorious.

DoomFace • 8 years ago

Thank god London has 70mm theaters. In fact, London has an awesome Grindhouse theater that Tarantino called one of his favourite in the world. I still want to hear confirmation London is getting this, I cannot imagine we wouldn't.

This is also an opportune time to mention, I smoked weed with Tarantino, for like 3 hours. Swear to god, just him and me. This is when I was in uni in London, and two girls knocked on my door around 3 am, and told me Tarantino wanted to smoke weed. This was in Kensington High Street. I was a known pothead and two girls I knew met Tarantino at a pub in Ken, and he was asking ppl for weed, so these two girls brought him to me.

I was in such shock, that we just went to the lounge area of my building and just started smoking joint after joint, right in there. The girls immediately left, so it was just him and me. And it was pretty strange. I think he was clearly coming down off a lot of cocaine. He was very nice but also wasn't very talkative about an hour in, and this was just right before everyone had cameras in their cell phones. That man can fucking smoke marijuana like nobodies business.

He thanked me many times before eventually getting a cab back to his hotel. Was a surreal experience.

God, what I wouldn't do to be back in Uni. Carefree, and so much fucking fun.

Crossing my fingers that the AFI Silver gets this!

At least according to this there might be one or two in Baltimore, a few in VA, and at least one in West Virginia. http://www.redballoon.net/c...

Doubt a lot of them will get Hateful Eight though. I have my hopes up... the AFI Silver did The Master in 70mm when it was released so anything's possible.

Human Disaster • 8 years ago

I check AFI Silver's site every few weeks to see if they're getting it.

As far as I know my "local" Alamo (45 minute drive in Loudoun) can do 35mm but that's the extent of it.

gabriele • 8 years ago

my favorite theater! hope to be there chrismas day

Andrew Cybulska • 8 years ago

I feel like at this point the person running their Twitter account is going to go "Oh, we're getting it? Better tell Andrew right away before he bugs us again."

Jonathan Hansen • 8 years ago

I hope we get the chance here. I will make the effort to see it in 70

Bloody_Porch • 8 years ago

This is awesome, but it also sucks. I'll literally never be able to see the longer cut of the movie just because I don't live near a theater with a 70mm projector. I'd love to make the pilgrimage to one, but I'm a broke student so it ain't going to happen. I'm sure the other cut of the movie's great, but it's incredibly cruel to torture me and many other cinephiles with a longer, undoubtedly better cut that we just don't have the ability to see.

Munsonn • 8 years ago

I'm sure it will be on the DVD

snackage • 8 years ago

It keeps surprising me that reserved seating isn't standard in the US.

Edit: I'm sure that Europe will get the shity end of the stick as with all those special presentation events.

T.D. • 8 years ago

This is really cool.

Salt Lake Film Society near where I live will do special event midnight movies with half an hour of old grindhouse trailers that lead into the feature (their most recent-- John Carpenter's "The Thing"). I love that kind of thing.

I always wish my holy grail of roadshow movies-- the lost, three-hour cut of "The Blues Brothers" with an intermission-- could somehow be resurrected and finally shown in that format. I would be first in line.

jeitai • 8 years ago

I have cherished memories of midnight movies at The Tower. Dank, sticky atmosphere included. Probably the closest I'll ever get to a true grindhouse experience.

Olyphantastic • 8 years ago

Wait you don't get reserved seats in American movie theaters? What the hell is the point buying your ticket online, if you can't reserve you seat and come late (like when the commercials are over)? I think I have only experienced no reserved seats on festivals, on regular release it always reserved seat. It such a good experience to pick out your favourite seat online before you go.

hippogriffrider • 8 years ago

don't go late and disturb people trying to get to your seat

Mike McNeely • 8 years ago

A hint of elitism in the idea people are not going to the movies anymore because they can get them for free illeagally. Maybe it's just the high cost of going to the cinema makes some a bit choosier. Watching the same Coca Cola or M&Ms commercial five or six times because you went to the theater fifteen minutes early for a seven o'clock showing that won't actually start until seven thirty because of more ads for a sub par experience on a dirty screen with shit sound because the only option for miles and miles is the local corporate owned bastard child of a Carmike or a Cinemark who's bottom line is making the most money with only an underpaid skeleton crew running the joint instead of any kind of focus on theatrical presentation. My wife and I can spend twenty five bucks on tickets OR we could drop twenty on the blu a few months later and enjoy it with superior sound and picture quality compared to our local Cineplex in the comfort of our own homes.

I'm in the middle. I have zero issue shelling out full price the day of the premiere for movies that deserve it. But, unfortunately or not, I just can't justify seeing lesser fare that I know I can torrent 3 months later at no risk to myself.

Conor Metz • 8 years ago

So excited for this! I recently watched the roadshow version of Kingdom of Heaven again and thought it was so cool to see it with the overture and intermission. I remember thinking why the hell don't more movies do this?! It's a great way to build mood before the picture starts. If they're doing this with Hateful Eight, then I am super excited. Mostly I'm just thrilled Morricone is scoring a new western and its a Tarantino western!

Key Chung • 8 years ago

Living in Chicago, the danger is that all roadshow screenings will sell out instantly, not that there won't be one. Still, this is super cool.

Vince Clortho • 8 years ago

Few things make me as happy about picking Austin as my city to live in than having a 70mm-equipped Drafthouse four miles from my house. Merry Christmas to me!

Dunning Kruger • 8 years ago

I envy you all that can enjoy Alamo's events. Here movies are a sterile, overpriced multiplex affair... But I think I'm going to do something really silly for Episode VII like going cosplay with my friends (we are all in the 40s) challenging the puzzled faces of our wives and casual moviegoers.

Dave S. • 8 years ago

One more reason I wish there was an Alamo Drafthouse here in Philadelphia. *cue sad Charlie Brown music*

hippogriffrider • 8 years ago

the Lincoln Sq amc had 70mm Interstellar so I'm hoping I can catch this there

Neon Paradise • 8 years ago

If studios are worried about getting me to the theater on opening day, get rid of 3D. I'm drained from having to look up 2 or 3 different theaters to see in which one I can watch my movie without the equivalent of wearing sunglasses. I'm also going to assume parents would be happy to pay at least $10 less when they're taking the whole family out.

J. Blatto • 8 years ago

Forgot how much I missed The Alamo Drafthouse until I watched Ant-Man in Bangkok recently. Literally 40 minutes of insane international commercials (in a language I don't speak) and one tribute song/national anthem to the king (which everyone has to stand during) before the movie got started. I was worn out before the movie even began.

Jacob King • 8 years ago

I hope Melbourne is getting to see this...

Something • 8 years ago

I'm sad that nothing near me here in Charleston can support this. Nothing projected on film comes here.

IrvingForbush • 8 years ago

God bless the AFI theater in Silver Spring's 70mm capabilities.

Nathan West • 8 years ago

We have 70mm here in Portland and I am SO excited for this screening! Sounds amazing!!

There's... actually a chance I might get to see this in 70MM. My nearby IMAX was one of the theaters that opened Interstellar two days early screening it in 70MM, and I was there opening night. Though the movie itself moved between being incredible and being excruciating for me, the experience itself was top-notch. The visuals were glorious, and there were no ads since there wasn't room on the print. Fingers crossed we get something similar with H8.

Mezentine • 8 years ago

I wish the roadshow wasn't on Christmas day. Christmas to New Years is back when I'll be home with family in a small town and there almost certainly won't be one of the roadshow theaters nearby. I won't be back in a major urban area until its probably passed :/

Trama • 8 years ago

This is incredibly exciting. That said, I think moves like this are less about pulling people back into the theater and more about rewarding the party faithful that still want a theatrical experience. The horse is already out of the barn, and the public seems fine with watching films on their laptops, their phones, their tablets - horrifying for us who love film - but I see it all the time on the L - kids, teens, 20-something, all watching films on tiny little screens. Honestly, if theaters want to survive, they need to broaden their view of distribution (like the Alamo has) - to give people what they want - big 70mm screenings like this for us - and ways to bring movies to those tiny screens for everyone else.

James Hinton • 8 years ago

There's 7 cinemas in the whole of the UK that are 70mm capable. I'm all for what QT is doing, on some level (Though his comments about the other version of the movie just sounds overtly bitter. There's people who just want to watch a movie the best way they can too you know Quentin), but it's a shame that I'll likely never get to see this version.

DoomFace • 8 years ago

There are more than that. I read the article you did, and it's missing at least 3 other cinemas in London, off the top of my head, that can do 70mm.

Doctor Drewthulhu • 8 years ago

Maybe England needs to step on up!

Mav • 8 years ago

I love this but if it's not going to happen anywhere near me (and I'll be generous with "near") I hate this.

TDMZ • 8 years ago

Will definitely head over to Austin for this. Especially since Houston will certainly not get it.

TheMovieArtist • 8 years ago

70 mm all the way! Hoping the Zoo Palast in Berlin is gonna present it in this format.

Didn't Tarantino say he pays for a certain amount of cinemas so they would be able to show it the way he intended?

DrMatt • 8 years ago

I wish people like him ran movie studios instead of their parent company business bean-counting executives.

MoeJontana • 8 years ago

When should we expect locations and dates/times to be announced? I plan on booking a 3-4 day trip to one of the cities showing it (Probably Austin or NYC)

Vince Clortho • 8 years ago

There's not an official list, but yeah, the top 8 markets are more than likely sure bets (LA, NYC, Austin, Chicago, San Fransisco, Seattle, Houston, and I think Minneapolis?)

rubi-kun • 8 years ago

Boston should get it. The Somerville Theater has a 70mm projector and the Coolidge was able to set one up for The Master.

Andrew Bueno • 8 years ago

Fingers crossed for the Cinerama in Seattle!

Mezentine • 8 years ago

I really hope they'll run it at the Denver Drafthouse. Otherwise I may need to make a pilgrimage back to Minneapolis

Doctor Drewthulhu • 8 years ago

Pretty sure we'll get it here in Portlandia.

We all have artisanal 70mm theaters in our basements!

Okay, maybe just this one...

I'm going to share a story here I haven't had the chance to:

Tarantino spoiled the Hateful Eight for me!

I went to an advanced screening in LA a month or so back, it was supposed to be a secret but most folk had guessed what it was beforehand. Movie opened with an overture and Tarantino gushing about the project. There was an intermission, and because I was within spiting distance and no one else was, I started a conversation with the dude. It was short and pleasant, and I joked that he had "Made 12 Angry Men" as a western, which is a silly comparison but got a laugh from him. He then replied "Actually, it's more like ___________ as a Western" (not putting name of the movie for spoiler reasons)

I laughed, went to bathroom, and thought about it. "Wait", I said to myself; "there's only one way it makes sense to compare it to that movie, and that's if... Oh..."

I went back, the movie started up again, and looked around. These schmucks had no idea how the movie was going to end!

Sorry, not super relevant, but I figured I wouldn't get to share this story any other time. When he talked about the two versions of the film at the screening, he said the longer cut was JUST the version with the overture - it sounds like that's no longer the case though, as there were a couple of weirdly edited shots in the version we saw too.
