As I tell my friends and co-workers and everyone else that I meet at conferences and training classes:
Document everything as far as smoke, fire, EMS exposures and should the need arise to apply for a Disability Retirement, use an Attorney with the required background.
And if need be, get the medical test's you want that may back up your claims, eve if you have to pay for it yourself. In the long run, it may benefit you.
Make sure everything is sent Certified-Return Mail and put everything in a nice large storage tub for easy reference.
