In the UK we used to say that such people had become "possessed of an evil tiger spirit", dealt with the bodies and moved on. Now that we have pulled out of Malaya and belief in spirits is considered eccentric we are split as to whether to say that the person had become "possessed of extremism" or even "possessed of Islam". I'm half expecting a new Matthew Hopkins to set up shop in Ipswich, Suffolk and perhaps Ipswich, Massachussets as well, though whether the hunt will be for suspected muslims or suspected UKIP/Trump supporters is still unclear. I notice that in the UK we are all still required by law to carry out two hours of longbow practice every week, supervised by the local clergy, a routine which might cause problems with the concealed carried laws unless we all wear burqas in public. Judging from the 20,000 comments below it looks as though 52% of the commenters believe US citizens have the constitutional right to shoot on sight anyone suspected being possessed of an evil tiger spirit, and bypass the Hopkins stuff. In the UK we are not allowed guns, so the time taken to prepare a bonfire in the High Street is sufficient to give the suspect a sporting chance of escaping.

Furthermore, people who merely point this out are denounced as Islamic apologists, sympathisers or communists.

Finally, I am alluding to historical precedents centuries ago (and possibly again decades ago, and indeed throughout history) in which a state of heightened diffuse social existential anxiety prepares the ground for mass hysteria, witch-hunts, condoning of shoot-at-sight suspects by vigilantes, lynch-mob murders and even judicial executions.

What I did not mention above was the attitude of many UK politicians. Their promotion of this new concept of "Islamophobia" that some of them have latched on to is insulting to most UK citizens and is likely to end in tears and a backlash, the latter possibly already in progress. Already new "hate speech" laws are being introduced in the UK which suppress freedom of speech (even if it is only on the internet or on blogs). Whilst it is entirely conceivable that some UK nutter will now be triggered by Nice/Munich into acquiring an illegal weapon and shooting the friendly neighbourhood open-all-hours Pakistani shop keeper, trying to criminalise the communication or even the holding of ideas which the state deems to be "hate" is repugnant to most (outside the BBC and Guardian). Fortunately (in my opinion) Breitbart is not scared to host this sort of ranting blog, whereas the UK main stream media and university campuses would ban it outright.
