Seen in the right light, broadcast TV not only has a big role to play in the video landscape of the future (http://www.morganwick.com/2..., it's critical to preserve net neutrality in the long term (http://www.morganwick.com/2.... Few, however, realize this. It would help if broadcasters were more concerned about giving policy-makers a reason for them to exist rather than trying to protect their retransmission consent revenue at all costs.

Well-written & argued! Two points in particular resonate. (1) Wheel of death. I've got 50 megs down and it's awfully tough to get through almost any streaming content from my Roku, Apple TV or TiVo OTT box without buffers & restarts. When it happens, I'm not sure why, but it's actually more frustrating even than sitting through commercials. Quality is Job #1 in video and while my stated bandwidth is easily sufficient, OTT still doesn't work nearly well-enough. (2) Unified search & discovery. I have been involved in countless efforts to pitch pay TV operators innovative ways to attack this problem for over a decade. Yet the problem is worse today than it has ever been!

I have to disagree. My Roku box has the initial "buffering" screen but once
that's over the quality is much better than OTA, which constantly skips and
freezes and has stutterring audio. All this, even though I'm less than 5 miles from Sutro Tower in San Francisco. When continued OTA reception requires a new tuner for ATSC 3, I'll probably just not bother! I would be curious to know what
percentage of OTA customers were lost at the first round of digital broadcasting.

The truth is that my I am really surprised by my set-up - and it's true that my Roku box performs better than what I saw from Amazon Instant Video on Apple TV, which was casted to the screen from the Phone. It may be that we're just at the inflection point when all these various workflows are going to begin working as advertised. In which case, perhaps the death of Linear TV is almost here.

I'm on the east side of the bay watching NASCAR right now on 5.1. The quality is excellent from Sutro. A lot of times it's the luck of the draw. I have a Clearstream 2 outdoor antenna. I find some hiccups from 7.1 on a windy day like yesterday and oocaisional problems from the San Bruno channel 11.1. But most of the time it's a great experience. I use the antenna for weekend sports and local news. Cut the Comcast in 2013.
