Party unity is a meaningless façade unless it is principled. With the most " good will " in the world how do you reconcile " political revolution " stressing " unacceptable economic inequality " ( Bernie Sanders ) with the " greed is good " Wall St. status quo ? Quasi-pacifism with Neo-Colonialism ? What has the ONE PERCENT done for that " angry working class " lately ? Both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump agree that the American Dream is dead. The Zeitgeist for Election 2016 is clearly anti-establishment.
It does not help for Hillary supporters to make reckless claims that Bernie Sanders supporters have a " penchant for violence ". That is nothing less than resurgent McCarthyism. A new Red Scare ?
Senator Reed -like President Obama - often sounds very reasonable while essentially trying to square the circle.

You said "Both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump agree that the American Dream is dead."

It's called "fear mongering" and is a part and parcel tactic used by right wingers but Bernie Sanders seems to have no problem engaging in typical right wing style campaigning.

The funny part is I don't know a single person who feels that the American dream is dead ?? Most of the people in my circle of family and friends are hard workers who adapt to economic change, manage their finances, are careful with credit cards, etc. The other people I know who complain about their finances are just lazy and/or think that credit cards are spending money.

As for Trump, in one breath he brags how super rich he is and how much money he'e making, how successful he is then the next breath he says how bad the economy is, etc. Come on, doesn't take a genius to figure out how contradictory he is.

Bernie Sanders never held a steady job in his life until in his 40's he started running for public office. He is the last person to talk about the "middle class" struggles.

People have pity for Burnie. His rallies in Southern California were full of...high school students who wanted a free t-shirt.
Burnie is burnt, Burnie is toast, bye bye Burnie.
We got work to do defeating Trump.

I think Bernie Sanders has an excellent chance of winning the California Democratic Primary. If trends and momentum count for anything, then Hillary is a falling star. Polls show Trump beating Hillary in the presidential election. The same polls show Bernie Sanders beating Donald Trump. Something is happening here.

Polls and Momentum don't replace the will of the people who want HILLARY. Nice try though.

Well, if THE PEOPLE love Hillary so much, why are they so shy of giving her visible support ? All the crowds, all the energy, all the enthusiasm, the X-factor that makes winners, seem be cheering on " socialist " Bernie Sanders . I myself " felt the Bern " in Roger Williams Park last month at a Sanders rally.I was not surprised when he won the primary here in Rhode Island.
With Sanders before me speaking in front of the Temple to Music on beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon, I felt the vibes of America's " Democracy Spring ".

I took a digital phone photo of my ballot selecting Bernie Sanders . At least socialism in one state ?

To your very first question: because most of Hillary supporters are NOT part-time high school kids. Look at Burnie's huge rallies in NY, Pennsylvania, where he lost badly.
Hillary spends time reaching out to the working class, visiting mom-and-pop stores, small restaurants, daycare centers, trying to understand their daily challenges.
Bye bye Burnie and his supporters!

Very well said John. Also, most Hillary voters did not even bother with the primaries because we knew Sanders was an unelectable candidate anyway. The Democratic party was simply giving him a national platform to bring some of his ideas into the mainstream but he turned like a rabid dog and bit the hand that feed.

Thanks for clarifying this.

The illiberal liberals of the news media do not represent the " will of the people ". They are mostly the corrupted voice of the capitalist ruling class, the ONE PERCENT, ultimately inclined to " fascism " themselves ( indeed capitalism, observes Robert Reich, is becoming incompatible with " democracy " in America ). This American ruling class is nervous about the erratic Donald Trump's plan to " make America great again ". Hillary Clinton is THE CANDIDATE of both Wall St. and the Pentagon - with its Neo-Colonialism foreign policy.
Hillary Clinton has completely alienated the " angry " white working class. Working class black voters are being deceived by the voices of the black bourgeoisie . And women voters are being deceived by the effete " identity politics " of jaded feminists.
Trying to marginalize " socialist " Democrat Bernie Sanders is political foolishness. The political establishment will " reap the whirlwind ".

For Burnie, democracy means "my way or I will insult and destroy you", what a petty and selfish man who has shown his real face. His own supporters are leaving him.
No further comment about the biggest loser, sorry for your loss.

Yes, " no further comment ". The Hillary militants must budget their social media time.

John Papatte • 7 years ago

Your next comment will go straight to the trash where you belong. Unless you issue death threats, like your Burnie Bros, then it will go to the police.

I am no fan of NPR monitors. But they usually do screen out gratuitous insults and abuse. Politics should rise above personal hostility.

Sorry, did get carried away with all the news about violent incidents, day after day.

Ron Ruggieri • 7 years ago

My own fear is the real possibility of screening out controversial opinion in eliminating personal abuse. I want to know what people FEEL not just what they think.
So I hope you err in the direction of more " free speech ".

It's over for Bernie. Face it. Now he's just wearing out his welcome, like the realtive you let visit and can't get rid of.

Hillary only needs 78 delegates, victory is really close, we're so proud of her. 2 big concerts for her in L.A., a Star among the Stars!
We're with HER!

Party unity is unlikely. The ruling class has tried to minimize Bernie's message from the beginning. The super delegates of Rhode Island are out of touch with the American experience. They think you can save for your child's education and for your retirement, pay for health insurance, day care, and keep a roof over your head for the typical Rhode Island wages. Their solution to the funding of social security is to raise the age of when you can collect full benefits. Tax breaks for the rich and bailouts for banks but if you need to file for personal bankruptcy due to medical bills the process will just grind you into the dirt. It costs less to provide people with an education than to incarcerate but we choose incarceration over and over. Where is the incentive to rehabilitate when prisons are private for profit company? The cost of these god damn wars, into the trillions now and for what?We always have money for war but when Bernie proposes free education everyone gets all crazy about how much will it cost. The super delegates declared their support for Hilary Clinton speaks more to their desire to keep the power. Party unity, don't count on it.
