This article neglects to talks about the hordes of workers who report having horrible working experiences at this agency. This is probably one of the main reasons they failed. They treated the heart of their agency like garbage all the while pretending to be "good" people helping those in need. They don't get it and deserve the worst painful failure.

" It had created four for-profit subsidiaries, and eight related not-for-profit subsidiaries, five of which were related to FEGS through common board members." Lesson? Can't have more takers than givers and expect sustainability.

Outstanding reporting. Capital NY and the Forward are owning this story.
A few thoughts:
1) The reporters describe the network of UJA-affiliated charities as "insular," and that is surely one of the root problems of this mess. You have to wonder how the FEGS board operated, if it was the kind of place that squashed dissenting views or concerns. The connection to Sheldon Silver is troubling.
2) I deeply hope that the investigations into FEGS lead not only to a better idea of who was responsible, but also how such debacles can be prevented in the future. We (government, philanthropy, individual citizens) HAVE to get better at rooting out rotten nonprofits, especially when there are others that are being run responsibly and prudently. FEGS was highly rated on nonprofit sites like GuideStar and Charity Navigator. It received renewal after renewal from government funders. Surely FEGS had some very capable and dedicated staff, but it's infuriating to see how the bad decisions of management were legitimized by continued funding.

FEGS was never rated by Charity Navigator, however it is on our Donor Advisory List.

Allsector being shopped. Execs trying to suck some cash out of this before collapse. Debt holders will get screwed. DA should lock this org down.
