Strange name for the company WITHOUT a heart. They have ruined the music at many a radio station, too.

"I Hurt Media?" A perfect name.

bennymodeen • 9 years ago

Or "ihate media"?

Sal Klein • 9 years ago

Ultimate definition of "putting lipstick on a pig.". Same lousy company, same lousy leadership, same hemorrhaging under $20 billion of debt. Nothing at all has changed. The company still has massive problems with a corrupt, inept charlatan leader. Pittman again attempts to grab headlines with a superficial ploy, while.the real problems with the company fester. Call it whatever you want, but it is still a turd. Pittman must have dreamed up this idea while.high in his luxury tent at Burning Man.

Brian Burns • 9 years ago

You can't polish a turd!

That being said Clear Channel (insert new name here) whatever media still is doomed.

grouchokerr • 9 years ago

If they keep kicking debt down the road, it might be in a few years, I Had a Heart Attack Media.

enuffzenuff • 9 years ago

I have to laugh at this. Not so much because Clear Channel by any other name is STILL Clear Channel, but at the very, very least, the "new name" is so grammatically incorrect, THAT is what's laughable. I may have brought this up in the past, so my apologies for doing so again; but why is it that in one instance, the "heart" logo means "heart," as in iHeartMedia; when in another, the "heart" logo means "love," as in "I Love NY?" Yeah; it probably started with the movie "I (Heart) Huckabee's" (which was obviously not created by an English major). But, still, some chowderhead never "got" it, and let it slide. As for CCM+E, er, uh, iHeartMedia, whoever came up with the "iHeart" monicker in the first place, is just as much a moron as Pittman; only when the impending doom does occur, they may not have quite as far to fall.

KrissyTaylor • 9 years ago

Kinda ironic that after giving the new kid startup crap for using the name iStreamRadio, they turn around and pull a name change.... No worries though iStreaMedia won't send you any of the same letters.....

Paul • 9 years ago

A pile of sh*t is still sh*t, no matter what you call it.

Scott • 9 years ago

Hi! My name is Scott! No one likes me and I have no friends. But tomorrow, I will be the NEW Scott; completely different person than the OLD Scott. So tomorrow, will you all like me and want to be my friend? I can understand why you wouldn't like the OLD Scott, but tomorrow, everything will change...because then I'll be the NEW Scott! How 'bout it?

TF • 9 years ago

You hit the nail on the head New Scott LOL

Dave • 9 years ago

Full disclosure. I do NOT work for CCM&E or now iHeartMedia.

You guys need to stop bitching. You are either not working because you were downsized by iHeartMedia or just bitching because they are the biggest company out there and you like to bitch just to bitch.

I've moved 9 times in 20 years. I've worked for Clear Channel 2 times in my career. I've worked for Cumulus, Citadel, and mom and pops.

Move and get another job in radio with another company or just shut up. Stop whining and complaining since you are not in radio anymore or not with iHeartMedia.

You either survive and stay employed by iHeartMedia or any other company OR the industry passes you by. If you don't work in radio anymore, stop looking at ALL ACCESS and bitching about it.

John Wilcox • 9 years ago

TRANSLATION: All because these companies are destroying the industry for short-term gain, if you can even call it that, STFU because I manage to eek out a living by being a radio vagabond.

Seriously, 9 moves in 20 years? Longevity much? Anybody like your work for very long? Anywhere?

Dave • 9 years ago

2 format changes and 2 downsizes. Have never been fired for my 'performance'. Each job is bigger market and more salary, so yeah, my work is just fine. I love radio and love this business.. I choose to survive and thrive and don't let what I can't control bother me. I move on and apply, interview and get a job with whatever opportunity that fits both their and my needs.

John Manzo • 9 years ago

Doubtful anybody here really begrudges your career choices. Some may just be a tad cynical about today's radio wage slaves because they remember how good it can be with proper staffing and pay levels.

RuralStupidity • 9 years ago

More money? From $7.25 an hour to $8? From market 211 to 196?

J. Rob • 9 years ago

I'm just a causal music fan.....but I can tell you that Clear Channel has destroyed the quality of radio over the span of nearly 20 years. Their channels are absolutely soulless. Automatic DJs, automated playlists, the same 20 songs played to death for months until a new batch of formulaic dogsh*t comes along that they can play to death. It just suck man, and people are really getting sick of it. I've never seen so many young people who listen to 20-30 year old music more than the music from their own generation. That's clear sign of how bad the music industry has become, and Clear Channel has played a very big role in that.

Ram6 • 9 years ago

I'm not a CCM+E/iHeart Media fan, but...radio can't hurt the music industry. The music industry hurts the music industry by churning out garbage and calling it music. C'mon blame the right player. In the case of music it's not (insert name here).

enuffzenuff • 9 years ago

You're absolutely right, Ram6! In one respect, it's the other way around, as I've heard it over the years. Where formats used to be "slices," they've now become "slivers" due to fragmenting, in large part because record companies sometimes don't quite know how to market/target any given artist. So, where some formats (Top 40, for example) used to serve as "melting pots," where formatically incongruous singers like Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, and even the likes of The Singing Nun, could manage to coexist with The Beatles, Motown, and "Bubble Gum," that dynamic doesn't exist in the same manner anymore. I, personally have had discussions (dealing in the anecdotal, as there was no iron-clad data) that while nobody can predict who will be the next musical phenomenon (a la Elvis, or The Beatles), too much of the music being cranked out seems to more about the "here and now," than anything of (albeit subjective) "quality," which just could be good enough to withstand the test of time. Sure; each generation will always listen to the music they grew up with, no matter how fantastic or crappy it is. It's just that too many songs don't have a good, long shelf life; and almost always for the wrong reasons.

John Manzo • 9 years ago

Look out 'Media'! Take it from 'Radio', when this company iHearts you, you're in trouble.

Former Republican • 9 years ago

Kind of like when AT&T had to change their name until folks forgot how much they sucked . . . . .

RuralStupidity • 9 years ago

And congratulations on being as former Republican. As long as that doesn't mean you're now a Libertarian.

grouchokerr • 9 years ago

I love how Dave broad strokes everyone that "bitches" about the Clear Channel name change are out of Radio. We're not out of the biz and even if they are, they have every right to say whatever the hell they want about a company, that nearly on their own, have destroyed the fabric of our industry. Personally they should have changed to Clear Chanel #5. They'd still stink though.

The new logo is reminiscent of goatse.

Dave • 9 years ago

Look, all I am saying, is why bother complaining about Clear Channel or iHeart Media or even Bob Pittman. As long as he is the CEO, he will do what he feels is the right way to guide the company he has been charged with leading. Finding ways to grow the share in everything including the bottom line. ALL BIG companies have debt, so why bother whine about that. All companies downsize, re-organize, or whatever they feel they need to do. iHeart has premium choice, they have little staffs, and they have employees wearing 10+ hats. Thats the norm in radio and actually, its becoming the norm in the workforce. Every industry, every company that has stockholders and must find ways to increase the bottom line.

I choose to do my best to make a good living in this industry. Its tough, I am cash broke more often than not, but its the industry i chose to be in. If i don't want to work in this industry, i'll walk away. I program two stations for a mid size company and I have A LOT on my plate. I don't work for iHeart Media but would welcome the chance again if it happens. I am perfectly happy where I am employed now and hope to continue. Do I expect or want to move again, sure.

Gene Simmons spoke eloquently about the changing of the music side of the business for bands/songwriters. iHeart Media is doing what they as a company wants to do. Cumulus and the Dickey Brothers and their NASH brands are doing what they feel is right for their company.

Our job is to put the absolute best product we can on the stations on which we are employed and serve our market. Locally, syndicated, company playlist or 30+ currents, 2 employees or 10 employees, it doesn't matter.

Radio changes, business changes, life changes. Change WITH it and accept it and excel or find another career or industry that you feel is better for your specific needs.

John Manzo • 9 years ago

Of course everything changes, but that in itself is not a defense for bad strategy, poor performance, missed opportunities, etc. And while there are some workers willing to live a cash poor, insecure existence, the best and brightest typically are not. Also, you should not confuse ordinary debt loads with the way private equity firms operate... a big shoe is yet to drop.

I'm sure you're fighting the good fight, Dave. Just keep in mind that those critical of Big Radio only wish people like you didn't have to have it so bad.

robnokshus • 9 years ago

Oh yeah, Gene Simmons, the guy who eloquently said that depressed people should kill themselves. Aptly chosen example Dave.

Guest • 9 years ago

Gene Simmons is a cunt but he did make some valid points.

It is saddening that like Bob Pittman and Gene Simmons forgot theirroots. Hair/glam metal was meant to cheer people the $(%* up. Now he spouts stupidity like that.

petercavanaugh • 9 years ago

Upon reflection, the most amazing thing about this whole deal is that Bob Pitman has authorized a corporate name change starting with a small "i". Shocking!

Screamin_Jay • 9 years ago

It's going to be hilarious when the "iHeart" thing either dies or fails miserably or the fad simply runs it's course. MTV is no longer Music TV, CNN Headline News is no longer Headline News, ESPN is no longer "Entertainment" programming, it's 100% sports. Corporations need to be careful what they name themselves hence the fad comes to an end.

robnokshus • 9 years ago

Imagine the reduction in force it's going to take to pay to change all of those signs, stationery and business cards!

Skip McGuinty • 9 years ago

I wish I had a man-banana as big as Bob Pittman's ego.

Screamin_Jay • 9 years ago

Interesting... I'm on a cross-country trip and forcing myself to listen to terrestrial radio. I can hear a sharp, highly-produced, great-signal, great-audio-quality-radio station for 45 minutes and never know what market it's in or who the DJ is. Finally, I hear some reference to "iHeart..." and I go "DOH!" Should have known, Clear Channel, monolithic, brain-dead radio again. Then, Finally, I hear the legal ID and it's in freaking Gadsten, Alabama, a market WAY beyond the quality of the signal, audio and production quality for it's market size. Imported radio... HOW in the F**K can you listen to your home town radio station and never even know it's your home-town station? Not one word about the city, no live DJ telling you anything going on, NEVER telling the artist or song title... Air talent completely disconnected from the music and market. Yes, CC and Cumulus have completely ruined radio. Things come and go so fast you're left going "Huh? What?" I heard one break that was obviously a voice-track that was so buried in the music you could barely hear it, never mind absorb what he was saying. No one even tried to correct the volume at all.

One day, some enterprising young local owner will see the light and hire a LOCAL PD who will be allowed to PROGRAM, hire is own talent, develop his own format, connect to the city on multiple levels including sales, put LIVE LOCAL folks on the air and let them go... It'll wipe CC off the map.

Then, there's the part about how they treat people... Y'all can fill in the blanks from here.

Amazing_Larry • 9 years ago

When I worked for CC, the PD's were given a choice of "talent" from the Permian Choice (PC) list handed to them by corporate. The only thing that was local were the pre-produced weather breaks that were loaded in by the local news weather guy. This was a 6 station cluster that had only 2 live shows. Out of the 144 programming hours a day, only 6 of that was live. Well... 6 and half hours. They ran a live informercial until the board op passed away and were too cheap to hire a new one and cancelled the show.

Screamin_Jay • 9 years ago

I should add that it's hilarious to hear a DJ on a CC station sign off his shift when you have only heard his voice twice in the last hour doing bland "suitable-for-any-market" breaks, mentioning nothing about the market the station is in; doing these shift sign-offs at :40 BECAUSE HE'S NOT GOING TO SAY ANOTHER WORD IN THAT LAST 20 MINUTES!!!

Nate • 9 years ago

It's so sad how bitter you grown adults are over the changes within this industry. I just turned 22, graduated from Specs a couple years back before realizing I wasted 12 grand on such a joke. Even the radio instructors were either no longer in the industry, filled with angst, or both. They were always so vague too on why they moved on, because after all they were trying to sell a dying field to a group of paying naive students. It's all so clear to me now. The identity of radio is such a mess, it's so fragmented and just seems like an American pastime...like newspapers. Some of my friends were confused as to why I wanted to get into radio. Take it from young blood like me, most folks in their late teens and 20s don't even give radio a chance unless they have a crappy car with no choice. Quit pissing and moaning. Utilize your skills and assets, use that anger as motivation to thrive in a more secure field. Communications, PR, marketing, creative advertising... go back to school if you have to, shit. Whatever it takes. Dave was spot on with all his comments- I commend you, sir. You're doing what you love while taking it with a grain of salt and realizing a job is work. You have to work hard in this country to get what you want. Either put on your big boy pants and move forward with your life, or cry yourself to sleep into nightmares about the big scary Clear Channel monster. All the comments on this site's articles are negative. Talk about depressing. I hope you all find happiness sooner or later, you're wasting energy with all this complaining over something you all have no control over.
