So it's bordering on "okay"?

That's a nice place to land.

Baines • 10 years ago

Perhaps the most insidious part of these Borderlands DLCs are that they lower the bar on what people find acceptable.

Gothalion • 10 years ago

If youre playing Borderlands for the writing and story youre already doing it wrong. This DLC delivered in the form of Loot. Having the best chest drop rates Ive seen in game and boss that offers up a unique experience without being overly hard/easy.

Captain Merica • 10 years ago

There is snow way this deserved a 5. Darren you are one frigid reviewer...

Da11as • 10 years ago

Sorry dont care. As a single player gamer I really enjoyed BL2's first playthrough, GBX were true to their word and gave a much better balanced and well rounded single player campaign than the original game had. My problems started right after playthrough 1, in newgame+ mode (playthrough 2) with tougher boss battles like Terramorphous, and then later as I increased the modes to match my level, it just started to get unreasonably harder and seemed to be designed specifically for coop play. I managed to get through much of it in time for the season pass DLC's, my character being at around lvl 54, but jesus has it been a frustrating and thoroughly unenjoyable ride. Right now I just gave up, I cant go back to a lower PT mode because I get crap loot and no XP and I cant continue on in true vault hunter mode because the game is just too ridiculously demanding for a solo player, unless you're one of the top rated shooter players I guess. Which means I have the whole season pass worth of DLC that I cant play, which pisses me off no end.

Next time GBX really need to sort out the difficulty and balance issues for single player. Or just stop selling / advertising your game as a single player game. Having that tick box checked but not 100% supporting it is pretty deceptive from a solo gamers point of view.

So should I expect Moxxi for V-Day?

I mean I can pretty much guess them by now.

Only thing you're really missing is Scooter for 30 days in May or something.

Themuad • 10 years ago

They gotta milk the franchise dry, get that money bro.

Donald Milliken • 10 years ago

Yeah man and it's really a shame how you're forced to buy all of it . . .

jammin8317 • 10 years ago

the udders have dried up, fell off, and turned to dust... now they are just begging for scraps.... I loved this game but half of the season pass kind of sucked and the nickle and diming these guys do makes me want to look elsewhere for games...

Themuad • 10 years ago

Then do, if you want a good FPS then get Rage or Bulletstorm

jammin8317 • 10 years ago

I played rage and like it a lot. How is bulletstorm? just a random thought but I think Rage would be perfect for an Aliens mod as the enemy ai and movement would be a very good fit. Thoughts?

As much as these Headhunter packs are short in length at least Gearbox have been keeping this game going with content for just over a year! I keep coming back to Borderlands 2 for this stuff which is better than releasing some half-assed multiplayer modes within a couple of months & calling it a day like some titles do. For those complaining about the price of all this DLC, the GOTY edition is around $40 which includes everything up to the headhunter stuff so for pretty much $50 you've got the lot.. patience indeed pays off with this franchise.
I agree with the review in that some of the characters such as Marcus need more fleshing out in terms of back story, the world of Pandora is a great setting but I wish there was more lore to it all, maybe that Tales from the Borderlands title from Telltale can satisfy that...

Rob Wheeler • 10 years ago

I edited that first paragraph:

Borderlands 2 has had quite the long tail of purchasable content. Since its release a bit over a year ago, it has seen two additional characters for you to buy, four story DLC packs - you know, the type of stuff that used to just come with games at no extra charge, two bullshit money-grabbing level cap increases, widespread release of previously retailer-exclusive content that had been held back for everyone else in order to sell it later, dozens of new cosmetic customization options, and most recently, the series of holiday-themed Headhunter missions.

fbh • 10 years ago

If borderlands 2 would be a 10 hours game with little replay value I would totally agree with you.

But it's not. The core game (the one you get just purchasing the disc) is massive. I spent over 30 hours on it with a few friends and we only managed to max level our characters and didn't even finish all the sidequests. If we wanted there would have probably been another 40 hours of content (with new characters and doing the quests me missed).

Compared to 90% of single player/Coop games out there (other than MMO's) I think no one can say that Borderlands 2 was lacking in content.

Most of the stuff they have released so far isn't the "kind of stuff that used to come with the game". It's the kind of stuff we used to call expansion instead of DLC.
10 years ago games didn't have unlimited content, as some people blinded by nostalgia would like to belive.

I agree that DLC can be abusive and that most of it is crap. But borderlands 2 is one of the few games where I don't mind DLC, because the core game is already packed with content.

CannabisTV • 10 years ago

Repeating the same 3 hours of gameplay format for 10x doesn't make it a quality 30hr game. Fallout of Skyrim are good examples. This is just cookie cutter garbage, and I was hoping Borderlands would be cool since I love shooters, cool stylized graphics and open worlds.

Yoshiii • 10 years ago

going though the same dungeon 50 times in Skyrim doesn't mean there's 50+ hours of gameplay

fbh • 10 years ago

I actually liked Borderlands 2 more than Skyrim.

For starters the environments in borderlands where varied, there are tons of different areas that all look and feel unique. In skyrim 90% of the map feels the same and most dungeon are the same place re-arranged in a different way.

80% of quests in borderlands are basically "kill stuff", but the same goes for skyrim so I don't see any difference.

Loot is SO much better in Borderlands. Until the final moments you keep finding new weapons and getting new stuff. In skyrim you can reach a point very early where all quest rewards and all items you can find exploring are just crap.

Story was nothing special in either game. But at least borderlands 2 has a diverse cast of characters and some funny humor. Skyrim is a mega generic medieval fantasy story set in a mega generic medieval fantasy world with mega generic medieval fantasy characters

Kashif Omer • 10 years ago

They used to be called expansion packs, they used to be much more expensive and the only way to get bug fixes and they used to require boxed copies and dealing with a lot of installation bullshit. Rose tinted glasses much?

George Booth • 10 years ago

That may be. But I have one thing that's been bugging me. I've got a belt on that's holding up my pants. My pants have belt loops that hold up my belt. I don't know what's really happening down there. Who is the real hero?

CannabisTV • 10 years ago

But they knew most people didn't buy the expansion packs so they made sure they had a reasonably stable game to sell on day one.

Amerika_KC • 10 years ago

When did giant multi-hour story DLC's/expansions ever come with the game at no extra charge? I want to know where you buy games!

desert dragon • 10 years ago

Portal 2 says hello.

Amerika_KC • 10 years ago

I don't recall portal getting 4 story updates that are 4-7 hours in length for free. And if you're talking about the Steam workshop with user generated content then I think you have made a pretty big mistake in understanding what we're talking about.

desert dragon • 10 years ago

No, Portal 2 got one big story update for free, and it was of excellent quality, compared to borderlands 2 bad DLC'S, a meh DLC and a Good DLC. I could also point you to free to play games like Dota 2 and dwarf fortress, which have massive updates every year.

g0ggy • 10 years ago

While I agree with you, I think a F2P business model is an unfair comparison for this, especially when it's Valve.

Amerika_KC • 10 years ago

Portal and Portal 2 are games that Valve uses to leverage people into using their service and they are prime advertising fronts for the Steam workshop. Basically, they help keep people using Steam which makes Valve money. So saying they are "free" updates is technically true even though they are anything but free in the eyes of Valve.

Dota2 and any free2play game has a completely different business model and aren't really apt comparisons.

fbh • 10 years ago

Portal is a great game.
But unless you are really stupid the single player has less than 10 hours of content with little to no replay value.

Borderlands 2 takes, in average, over 30 hours to finish, probably 15 more if you decide to do all the extra sutff.

desert dragon • 10 years ago

Portal 2 takes about 30 hours singleplayer, multiplayer, and DLC, Just because the game is long doesn't justify holiday themed DLC, hell, MMO's have holiday DLC for free every year.

fbh • 10 years ago

Wow, gamers feel entitled.

Borderlands is their fucking game, they can choose what content they want to release and it's up TO YOU to decide if you want to buy it.
If you walk into a supermarket do you go to the manager and ask for a justification as to why they are selling Christmas cookies in christmas time? NO, because it's their supermarket and they can sell whatever the fuck they want. If you don't like you simply don't buy it.

Borderlands 2 gives you enough content in the core game, specially considering it hasn't been 60 bucks for a long time now (you can currently get it for $8 on steam). They don't owe you unlimited free content.

PS: Also, most MMO's that have well produced christmas DLC including new areas, new enemies, new bosses, new characters, new loot and a decent ammount of voice acting either requiere a monthly fee (so you are not getting it free) or are F2P games with tons of microtransactions

Rob Wheeler • 10 years ago

Back when developers weren't pumping out sequels every year and games were in development a little longer - until they were complete.

Donald Milliken • 10 years ago

And that's relevant to Borderlands 2 how? Three years passed between the release of the first and the second and I'd dare anyone that's actually played the games to completion to tell me either Borderlands was an "incomplete" game at release. I kind of understand the opposition to DLC and I sympathize, but sometimes it seems to overwhelm logic and reason.

Maya Harvey • 10 years ago

It's called the GOTY Edition, as well as the disc that came out with the first two DLC packs and the full game for almost half the price of the original disc.

MajorMajorMajorMajor • 10 years ago

I bought this game at release, it's a joke the amount of money they are milking out of it. Why does every update have to have a fee? I won't buy another Gear Box game, I hope their endless profiteering was worth it.

Mike • 10 years ago

terrible, so half assed GBX should be ashamed of themselves.

Baines • 10 years ago

It should be obvious by now that Gearbox has no shame. This isn't even particularly bad compared to Duke Nukem Forever (lies and a bad game) and Aliens: Colonial Marines (lies, a bad game, throw the other guy under the bus mudslinging, fraud, and potential embezzlement.)

Maya Harvey • 10 years ago

Is there a way to dodge his charge attack while playing as somebody other than the assassin?

Anodos • 10 years ago

Anyone have the Carol of the Bells song from Borderlands he mentioned? I would love to hear it.

Bwabwa • 10 years ago

Me and my friends got it when it was on sale not so long ago. It was okay, we ran through the thing in 15 minutes. Mind you, we were both in our 30's I think, so everything was quick and easy for us.

For what it was worth, it was okay. To celebrate the theme of Christmas in Borderlands and what not. Nice touch.

CannabisTV • 10 years ago

Borderlands is that creepy bum always asking you for money but you know they spend on crack instead of food. No money for you 2K Games & Gearbox. I'll grab the GOTY version in 6 months for $15.
