Great post - I have one comment to offer.
I was trying to thank many who were pinning my content from my blog, when suddenly one day I could no longer comment on any pins.
I submitted a ticket to Pinterest and they told me they don't like heavy commenting (which I didn't feel I was doing excessively, maybe 10 a day if even that).  So they turned my commenting privileges back on - but just thought I'd pass that along, that for some reason, they don't want us leaving too many comments.

Thank you soooooo much for adding this comment Cheryl - that is super important to know and it has come to my attention recently that it may be the case. I am going to edit the article to add in a caveat to "thank sparingly" to respect Pinterest's preference to not leave too many comments. Personally I hope they open it up a bit more as it would allow us to be more "social" and let's face it, people are pretty quick at responding, typing, etc.  I believe (hope) that the true social users woud outstrip any autobots making dodgy comments, but maybe it is the optimist in me!  Have a great day, and thank you so much for letting everyone know.  :o)

I just found this b/c I was looking for a post about the value of commenting on pins. Excellent advice across the board, Donna, but to the question about comments, is it worth doing since there are restrictions in place? Are people really out to be "social" in discussion on Pinterest, or simply like, repin, and "bookmark" good content for themselves? I'm literally just starting to dig into this so forgive me if these are newbie questions.

Hey Stephan - no such thing as newbie questions! That's actually a very good question. I actually haven't had too many problems with the restrictions now but I must admit I just go in and thank a few people here and there, not too incessantly! I would say that Pinterest is still social, so it is worth doing it, but maybe start with repins of your original content (ie articles or original images) and that way you can "contain" what you will be focusing on. If you do the www.pinterest.com/source/yo... you can also check out what has been pinned from your website so those pins are good to "thank people" from as they have made the effort to find your content and pin it. Hope that helps. By the way, this article will be updated soon, as it has been so popular and things have changed a little so I will be adding in some updates. I will let you know here when I do. One additional tip I have for you now is to use Picmonkey.com for image creation - it's my favourite!

I do that /source/ tip already. Huge help. I like the idea of conversing with those who share directly, versus what I do on Google+ which is use Ripples to seek out shares and thank them (also so I get notifications of comments on their threads...hee hee). Thanks again for all these ideas!

Great article, Donna! Just wondering though, how many pins/re-pins a day is considered spamming and ban worthy?

I'm with Pintrest on this one - it can be quite slow in the early evenings when it's heavily used, why clog it up with (un)necessary things and make it even slower. People want to search and pin, not wait for the cogs to turn around.I really don't think everyone wants a thank you for repinning, I repin things because they mean something to me, not to collect thank yous. I wouldn't think any worse of anyone not thanking me either.

Most peoole use multiple social media, so there are other places to leave thank yous. Find them on these and thank them there, it will drive more traffic to pintrest too.

Thanks for this wonderful "10 Commandments"!  I'm repinning your infographic.  Sorry to be in the "slow group" here, but I just found this article, and already I have a question.  Is there a hierarchy for where we locate the boards on our Pinterest site?  In other words, where are the best positions to arrange our most important boards — left? right? top? bottom? middle?

Hi Robbie - I tend to go with the traditional "above and below the fold" scenario, where I try to keep most of the boards that I want people to see the most "above the fold" (ie before the point where you need to scroll down the screen.  And then the ones at the bottom tend to be less important if they are missed. You will find that people will still find obscure content because of what you pin - ie they find it from the newsfeed as well as from coming to check out your boards (just like in facebook) so even if a board is not in "prime real estate" the pin might be when you pin or repin it, as it is out in your newsfeed. In my experience it is the latest pins that get the most attention, but by all means, keep an eye on how you want to reorder your boards.  Great question.  I am developing a Pinterest product and I will definitely add that in!  Cheers!

I've been looking for an in depth discussion about how to actually utilize Pinterest for my business (as a Content and Social Media Manager) and this one lays out a great course of actions. Pinterest is so new that most other Articles just tell what it is, and not to brag, but i'm already a power user (ie. Pinterest Addict.) I will definitely be joining the webinar.

Hi Anna - to break down the "tracking" idea, you just use the url that I have used on the example for Amy (ie www.pinterest.com/source/am... but substitute "yourwebsite.com" for the "amyporterfield.com" and it should work for you. Thanks for your feedback.  Glad you found it useful!
