I played with a Lumia 830at the Microsoft Kiosk at the Eaton Centre on Monday. There was no issue with the back cover. The interface was very smooth and I could not get it to lag. Playing with the camera a bit it was pretty fast and the pictures looked nice and the colors and brightness were vey well balanced. My current phone is an LG Optimus Quantum (yes the original Windows phone with the slide out keyboard, running 7.8. This 830 is light-years better, and I will be happy with it as soon as I pick one up (hopefully later today). The Microsoft Store version (when they go on sale) will have 2 covers in the box (I forget which ones)
While at the Eaton Centre on Monday (Oct 20), I also stopped By the Roger's booth, and was told that the 830 was an Android device when I pointed out the non working device, and then they tried to show me the iPhone 6... FAIL
The Bell store had nothing there yet, but at least they were aware of the phone and that it would be available today.

FYI: The Lumia 830 is NOT $400 on Rogers. It is $449, just like all the others. I just bought it and can confirm the price.

crocop24 • 9 years ago

Windows phones.. LOL. Just stop already.

TheShinraCorp . • 9 years ago

You mean like the first version of Android? The Palm OS and the 1st version of iPhone? Please take your rubbish else where good sir.

soundwave79 • 9 years ago

You know, people said the same thing about Apple in he late 90's. As a consumer you should appreciate diversity and competition. Is anybody saying ''Wind (or any smaller carrier) just stop already''? No, you want these company to challenge each other. Otherwise we're stuck with just iPhones Galaxy 5s's on ROBELUS.

Bell says $449 outright, does this mean i can walk in a bell store and buy it for that Price and walk out the door with it? With out signing a month to month contract!

waqqas31 • 9 years ago

That should be the case. Outright purchases are sometimes restricted on certain newer flagships, but I don't think this will fall under one of those categories.

athrun88 • 9 years ago

Phone will still be locked to the Bell network I assume.

Box • 9 years ago

Yea i would think so just wondering if they would let me buy it at full price and with out a contract?

athrun88 • 9 years ago

Absolutely. I did that when I first got the One M7. Walk in, pay, walk out.

Is the phone coming to Fido? The Nokia Canada site only lists Rogers and Telus as carriers

TheShinraCorp . • 9 years ago

It should be coming to Fido, heck I think this is the first Windows Phone device to come too every major carrier in Canada.

Not that it matters, but even the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have 1GB of RAM. It's all about how efficiently you use it.

snowranger13 • 9 years ago

The WP platform is pretty optimized, all apps run great with 1GB. Even the cheap devices with 512MB of ram run most apps, some are limited to 1GB+ though.

It's about raw user experience over full specs. Wait for MobileSyrup's full review I'm sure they'll agree :)

Humberto Giambrone • 9 years ago

I think he was referring to the typo (GHz instead of GB) as opposed to the memory limitations.

freestaterocker • 9 years ago

The camera is not enough of a reason to upgrade from my Ativ S... I'm waiting for either the One for Windows, or the next flagship that comes north. If I hadn't bought a flagship last time, though, I'd be all over it.

JonnyDub • 9 years ago

So what is the actual release date for this device? This article says "later this month" and "next week", but I thought it was supposed to be released on the 15th on all carriers. Really wanna get my hands on this thing already!

snowranger13 • 9 years ago

15th for Rogers. 22nd for Bell/Telus. I have no idea about Fido or SaskTel.

Philosoraptor • 9 years ago

"Microsoft has ditched the unibody plastic and finally incorporated some metal into Lumia line."

Finally? The 925 and the 929/930 have a metal frame. Sure, they're not available in Canada, but that's beside the point.

Jane McEntegart • 9 years ago

"Available in Canada" is sort of the whole point of mobilesyrup! I see where you're coming from though, I'll make it a bit clearer.

TheShinraCorp . • 9 years ago

Ya seriously, but then again they don't really do research on Windows Phones in the first place. So I understand. Of course if she wrote that it's the first phone in Canada to have a metal frame I would of said OK.

Debating whether selling my import L1520 RM-937 for this or not. Hmph.

snowranger13 • 9 years ago

If you're happy with your 1520 I wouldn't, the 1520's battery is supposed to be killer plus it's using a Snapdragon 800 while the 830 is using a 400. Although WP central tested and said there didn't seem to be much performance difference between the two on WP.

The 830 is a solid choice though if the 1520s size is starting to bother you.

Richard Grdovic • 9 years ago

Its the lack of LTE. I get spotty 4G at best because the 937 variant is from Asia and has spotty LTE network coverage. Also, carriers support is obviously lacking as O cant watch hockey on the go and the like.

Other than that it is a phenomenal device! ;)

Fidst • 9 years ago

I feel their naming convention is a little wack. Considering the lumia 900 came out 2 years ago.

snowranger13 • 9 years ago

9xx high end
8xx mid-high end
7xx mid end
6xx mid-low end
5xx low end

800 and 900 were WP7 devices, 820 and 920 were WP8 devices, 830 and 930 are 8.1 devices. Naming scheme makes sense.

Fidst • 9 years ago

Well then, look at that. I learned something today. What about the 1xxx series?
Also thank you.

snowranger13 • 9 years ago

No problem.
10xx is basically the 900 series with their insane camera tech. (just 1020 but MS confirmed they are working on something new, so probably 1030 sometime in the next few months)
15xx is high end phablet
13xx is low end phablet.

I've had the 900, and now currently using the 925 the internal battery is showing some age so hoping they announce the 1030 soon or I might just grab the 830 :p

freestaterocker • 9 years ago

1xxx are niche devices. The 1020 had that crazy awesome camera, and then there are the phablet devices. (1320, 1520)
