If Ebola were to match the attack rate of influenza but with the current 60% mortality rate roughly 300 million adults and 125 million children would die. That's why people are freaking out and why we need to take drastic measures to stop it. If it ever infects that one unique strand of DNA in a victim that helps it to mutate into a truly airborne virus we are in trouble.

Except it is not currently a 60% death rate, it is only 37% IN AFRICA, in the United State or Europe, it will be even lower. P.S. The amount of mutation it would take to become "airborne" would be so high, it would not happen in the this wave of Ebola.

Sorry Andrew but that is incorrect. According to the BBC as of 2 days ago there have been 8,997 cases and 4,493 deaths in West Africa. That's pretty close to 50% but what you have to remember is that infection and death counts are not going to be that accurate. Even some Doctors in the area have stated to foreign press that they believe the numbers are much higher but that it's just not getting recorded for what ever reason. Now in the U.S. it is going to be much lower but not because of the virus' morbidity rate but because the healthcare industry is more advanced. But what you are not taking into consideration is if a full blown outbreak occurs here in the States the mortality rate will cruise right back up to 70% or more. It takes 30 healthcare workers to support one patient. Imagine 10,000 patients with 300,000 healthcare workers and all the logistical support that goes along with that. Suppliers will have to dramatically increase production, waste services will have to upgrade their practices with many more steps involved with sanitation. What I am most concerned with is Ebola not being taking as serious as it should. People only see a few patients and so the threat is just not there but Ebola has a sneaky way of getting ahead of us - it's the incubation people that needs to be focused on. Ebola could be 6 degrees from Kevin Bacon before anyone realized it. The CDC has stated that Ebola has a 2 to 21 day incubation period but there are some virologist that believe that could go to 44 days. And then there's the proven fact that Ebola has been shown in the sperm of some survivors nearly 7 weeks out after they have survived and been cleared.
To a certain extent Ebola is airborne as proven in a study done with infected pigs and caged monkeys. The two were kept separated at around 20 feet and yet the monkeys contracted Ebola. No, this hasn't been proven in any studies with humans but they were having a hard time finding volunteers. If the CDC truly believes that it's not that easy to get Ebola and that just being in close proximity isn't enough then why are they tracking down every one of the 132 passengers on the frontier airlines flight that the 2nd Nurse was on. Oddly enough She had contacted the CDC and asked if it was ok to travel by commercial flight from Cleveland to Dallas and informed them She had a low grade fever but now the search for the other passengers? What about the passengers from the 5 other flights after She deplaned? They are not even using the plane right now even after they sanitized it but why not.? It shouldn't be a factor considering it's supposed to take direct contact to transmit the virus. And then there is the statement from the Director of the CDC, Tom Frieden, that it's ok for medical personnel not to have all the skin covered and use basic mask and only one layer of gloves yet they have pictures of him wearing a Level A Hazmat suit (spacesuit) when he was dealing with patients. I know that most surgeons and surgical staff will wear no less than two pairs of gloves with most wearing three. There's a lot going here that they are not telling us and that's not a conspiracy theory. Imagine the panic and what it would do to our fragile economy. What I think people need to do in these situations is follow as closely as possible what people such as the CDC director are doing when involved with Ebola. All other medical staff should do no less than the VIPs.

Furthermore I believe there is a large amount of misdiagnosed cases of Ebola virus disease, if you remember the cases where people who "died" of "Ebola" and came back to life? Well, that means they had a coma and Ebola does not give you a coma. Finally the problem is that how do you expect Ebola to even infect 10,000 people in America? The are 30,000,000 less people in the United states and 4,000,000 more miles of land, we also have good sanitation (showers, toilets, hand washing, fresh water, etc.) as compared to most of west Africa (cesspools, communal defecation huts, rives, etc). Finally the thing you said about the incubation period, Ebola only transmits though contact with bodily fluids (feces, urine, semen, blood, etc.) and it only starts doing that once you start having symptoms (because until you start throwing up, beading, and having diarrhea it is probably not going to spread unless you purposefully defecate on someone). So the CDC could stop all flights and passenger ships to keep someone in there incubation period from travelling long distances.

The reason Ebola could spread much faster here is because a higher percentage of the population travels frequently - planes, buses, boats, subways, trains, and taxis. Bodily fluids also include sweat and if you are sweating at even the earliest and most unnoticeable time of infection you are contagious. So no, you don't have to defecate on someone just to infect them. Transmission can occur inconspicuously. Look at the first case in which Thomas Duncan infected two nurses and yet they still haven't decided on how it happened. The CDC says they broke protocol but hasn't specified what protocol. Duncan at no time defecated on any of them. The Ebola virus has also been shown to survive on surfaces for up to 3 weeks. Someone touches the staircase and leaves Ebola particles behind. A week later someone else touches the same spot and bingo - another victim. One of the difficult things with Ebola will be tracking someone's past whereabouts and making a guess as to when they actually became contagious. If the CDC doesn't go back far enough in their timeline they could mess a few hundred potential infections. And then the incubation period starts all over again and it's different for every patient. If this were some highly deadly flu with a less than 3 day incubation period it would be easier to contain. Everyone goes home for 4 or 5 days and the virus burns itself out. When that incubation period gets stretched out it adds so many more variables.
