Perhaps F1 should try another track designer. It's really stupid to have all tracks designed by the same designer.

David E.M. Thompson • 9 years ago

Bernie cronyism?

Brian • 9 years ago

Agreed, why does his firm get hired to design every track? I feel they aren't very good at it.

Bobby Davis • 9 years ago

Bernie likes to put races where they have chosen Tilke to do the design. No Tilke, no race there.

Brian • 9 years ago

are they cousins or something?

scd • 9 years ago

they are the offspring of cousins.

Guest • 9 years ago

Chris, I agree his tracks are snoozers..
We need to give someone else a shot at.
The next designer needs to look at the great old European tracks, and figure out why they are so exciting to spectate at, have survived the time, and are not facelss, featurelss, bore fests!

Yetimania • 9 years ago

Tilke did it right at Kuala Lumpur for the first and only time...

Afterwards his neurones got exhausted...

But Bernie though otherwise.

David E.M. Thompson • 9 years ago

Every Tilke tracks is half Spa and half Monaco. Schizophrenic, I think.

Bring back the OLD, long Nürburgring!!

Alex M. • 9 years ago

Not Pirelli's fault that the layout was fast, wide, flowing, and lacked braking zones. Idk why this guy designs all the big tracks, because I'm 100% confident that I can design a better track than him.

Turn 3 was pretty cool.

herp derp • 9 years ago

Bad tracks, bad rules, bad sanctioning body... the Formula 1 experience. Really is a shame.

William Ford • 9 years ago

They'll fix the problem next year with different tire compounds.

I wish Laguna Seca was an F1 track.

Seca if a far better venue for F1 but they should be on IndyCar's schedule at least

You can bark at me all you want, but it's neither Herman Tilkes or Pirelli's fault.

The track produced really good shows in the GP2 and GP3 (i am as dead serious as i can be). As a matter of fact all other tracks by Tilke produce a much better race than F1.

The problem is the f1 car itself. It's design to flawlessly handle each corner with the highest speed and the lowest force (like a prototype on steroids). Since each team in a very and i repeat a very different situation financially and technically, the cars are broad apart in speed and time because of the massive rule book (that and it's been like that since forever though more noticeable since the Ferrari monopoly).

I can go on and on for why f1 is at a state like this.

But to sum it up
A bad (so you all call it, but whatever) technical track + Super technical and agile car + 11 teams. 22 cars, 2 for each team + Over millions of currency used for various reason from each team + A massive rule book leaving those who know like Newey to think of loopholes+ Talented and PAY drivers running and screwing around the race + one demonic ceo + one at more often times an unpromising federation leader + very poor choices + it's simply cause we all can't have nice things, it's life = This, enough said.

The fact that i rant about the confusion in F1, for each race i just can't bear watching such a very unusual train ride, and make me post such a long and estranged monologue has basically put me in such weird emotions i love it.

You guys love F1 and other champs like this too when they are at such state. We desperately love to have this and that in F1. As Bob Geldof said "Mankind is at it's most desperate is often at it's best". Mr. Ecclestone, you are indeed the best troll in the world but the greatest person in this world at the same time. Admit it everyone. I'm not even trying to be a moron, troll, or a dick. You all agree we love F1 and Bernie right now. There is no denial.

Greg Miron(LoneWolfGAM) • 9 years ago

If you find this too long for you... in short. Racing is passion, we love f1 and bernie. The more we complain we love it.
It's life. :-)

Tilke doesn't have to defend anything. This track layout is PERFECT for great racing. The GP2 race is all the proof you need.

SRA • 9 years ago

The problem is the tracks are designed to criteria, protocols and performance metrics. The great historic circuits happened by necessity, road availability, creativity and evolution. While just about all of these tracks have unique elements designed into them they all are singular and site specific. For example take a look at "The Glen"; nobody would ever design a track like that, ditto for Sebring, Brands Hatch, Le Mans and even Monaco. Bluntly COTA, the epitome of modern track design, has nothing to do outside of location with the roadways found in central "Hill Country" Texas, it just well might be in a cornfield in Nebraska or a wheat field on the Russian steppes.

Spoken like an Architect with a background/passion for organic design. Two thumbs up.

I think if F1 were to bring back re-fueling during pit stops, the racing would be much better. Too much talk about saving fuel and making a certain fuel mileage number in order to finish the race. They drivers are unable to push the car nor can they effectively fight to keep a position because of fuel concerns. During the Sochi GP, one than one team radioed to their driver that fuel was at a "critical" point.

calacan • 9 years ago

Correct! Amount of fuel used should be up to the teams to decide. They could go for high hp but worse mileage or lower hp and better fuel economy. Let the teams pick the strategy they want - and let them race!

archracer10 • 9 years ago

perhaps I am in the minority, but I don't mind the Tilke tracks that much, some of them are actually really good.. that being said, the Sochi track was the most "mickey mouse" I've seen in a long time. i'm sure the tires played a big role, but that layout just plain sucked.
