can you post exclusive statistics for int. students, if that is possible.
Hi vams -
We only plan to release the numbers in the post above as far as I know.
International acceptance rate :O
The numbers of international students admitted each year has stayed about the same over the past decade, however the number of applications has almost doubled in that time, leading to those really small percentages. Much the same for US admission rates too, the number accepted each year has been about the same, just the shear number of applications has grown. A decade ago there were a bit over 10,000 total applications, it was close to 19,000 last year.
Yeah, I know. But getting in still seems like an impossible task.
Not impossible. But very, very competitive, yes.
Are there any quotas on the number of int. applicants for any particular country?
Nope!
i read somewhere MIT accepts about 150 int. students but its only 115 this year. why?
Where are the early action applicants who were deferred but chose not to be considered during he regular cycle?
That's a good question - my guess is the number is so small (I'd guess single digits) that we didn't publish them.
But the number of deferred students at EA is very large(4,477) and you take all of them into account when calculating the total admit rate. Do you really imply that less than 10 of those 4,477 students either: (1) applied EA someplace else they preferred and got admitted, or (2) changed their mind between Dec and April and decided MIT was not for them?
I smell "deflating" admit % in order to "inflate" ranking.
1) certainly happens, but not often; the larger number would be students who were in ED programs elsewhere and were forced to cancel
2) this doesn't happen often, I think
but most importantly
3) we'd be taking these students into account as applicants if they withdrew or cancelled or deferred or denied or what. Which is industry standard, I think - not us trying to deflate or inflate anything.
So I think what you mean to say is that if my name is David I have a higher chance of being admitted?!?!?!
Lol, if only getting into MIT was that simple
Correlation doesn't imply causation ;)
Probably more of a surname dependent thing ...
m_quinn
If that's the case I suppose nobody with the last name Quinn will ever be admitted?
YES THAT IS WHAT I MEAN. THANK U JAKE. THANK U
You make my case everyday Chris ...

Back in my day (class of '93) it seemed like every other male student was named either Dave or Mike. So much so, that there were jokes flying around that a student club should be formed specifically for "Daves and Mikes at MIT." Because then, naturally, they could print up a special T-shirt with their club acronym-- DAMMIT! Sadly, I don't think the club ever materialized...
Well, you've got guts...
m_quinn
I mean how audacious to publish such an embarrassing clear documentation of MIT's RACIAL PREFERENCES! Defies all things ethical in a modern United States. Disgusting, depressing, and , most of all, disappointing ...
m_quinn
dude, do you seriously have nothing better to do than troll? from the rest of the world, here's some friendly advice: "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all."
m_quinn,
you clearly have no understanding whatsoever about how college admissions really works. maybe you should do your research first before making such specious claims.
really?
29% Asian admission when US Asian population is around 5%. Maybe it is you that needs a review ...Oh, and "never mind the man behind the curtain".

m_quinn's hands gently contoured themselves to his keyboard, quivering with excitement. This was the moment. He would show the fools. He would show them all. Time and time again people had refused to see the ineffable logic, the precise beauty behind his scrambled screen. A simple thing, really: it transposed words and numerals until naught of the mundane original remained, revealing the beautiful patterns beneath. Nines and ampersands clustered together in the bottom right corner of his browser, a barely contained menagerie of Brownian motion, while in the center of his screen, a list of proper nouns floated, waiting, some displayed upside down. "You are mine, Chris Peterson," he whispered under his breath, inhaling deeply. "You'll love me back one day; you just don't know it yet." Waiting for his racing heart to steady itself, he boldly logged onto the anonymous Internet forum and began to compose his missive to the world.
The international figures are quite daunting, but I guess that's to be expected.
That's pretty much obvious, ain't it? But yeah, very, very sad too! An Ultra-competitive Admission Process lies ahead of us!
True! MIT do something, won't you? get funds or anything but the number of internationals just 115? Feel so small and sad
Just out of curiosity-is the 1% homeschooling number simply because not very many homeschoolers apply, or because it's harder to gauge a homeschooled applicant's eligibility? :)
Because of the former, but the latter is also true.
True, true...thanks!
...crap. Well, I have to say, one of the more attractive parts of MIT is that homeschoolers are treated the same as any other student, so props to you guys!
Can you tell me if and now many Charter School students were admitted?
That's baked into the independent school number I think, but I don't have a breakout, sorry
Hello! Are you going to release the average weighted and unweighted GPAs for accepted students?
How many students in the class of 2017 had taken gap years?
Not sure. A small number - 10 or so, usually.
That Iron Maiden reference, if it exists, flew over my head. Is it, like, Number of the Beast or something? Help me out here.
How many international students, whose interviews were waived, were selected and admitted to MIT? It would be great if you can provide some stats over it.
Can the International Students (RA) submit their forms now or they have to submit them after EA gets over?
You can submit your application now, but it will not be reviewed until RA.
Thanks :)
Hello Chris,
First of all, very insightful blog post; I always find it interesting to see what the new class at MIT looks like (plus the most popular names is always a bonus). :)
If you don't mind, I just had a quick question (well, really two) regarding the MIT application: Are students allowed to submit resumes of accomplishments/awards to MIT in addition to filling out the corresponding section in Part 2 of the MyMIT application, or are you only looking for portfolios (art, music, maker, etc.)? If we can, do we just mail it to the MIT admissions office?
You've probably answered this question quite a bit, but I can't remember whether MIT lets applicants submit resumes or not. Thanks!
Hey Chris:
Which state(s) had the distinction of being "Least Represented US State:??

Well I would like to share some statistic about Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT )
in India-
Total applicant for 2013= 1.3 million
No of admitted = 9876
Rate of admission=0.75%
Qs ranking in subject of Engineering= 37
